Assignment #1

1. Two gas streams, CO2 and air, are flowing in the same direction in a channel. The
channel is divided into equal volumes by a piece of iron 4 cm thick. At a certain
point, a hole 1.2 cm in diameter is drilled in the iron so that CO2 diffuses from left
to right and air from right to left. Both gases are at a pressure of 2 atm and a
temperature of 20 C. On each side of the hole the gases are pure. At the right-
hand side of the hole, the concentration of CO2 in air may be assumed zero
because air is flowing rapidly past the hole. The diffusion coefficient of CO2 in air
at these conditions is 7.56*10-4 m2/s.

a) Find the molar flux of CO2.

b) Calculate the amount of CO2 that passes through the hole in kg/h.

2. A gas mixture at a total pressure of 150 kPa and 295 K contains 20% H2 , 40% O2
and 40% H2O by volume. The velocities of each species are -10 m/s, -2 m/s and
12 m/s, respectively, all in the direction of z-axis. Calculate:
a) the mass average velocity vm and the molar average velocity VM for the
mixture,
b) the mass flux (ji) and molar flux (Ji) of oxygen.

3. A test tube contains a liquid A at 20 C and atmospheric pressure. The saturation

pressure of liquid at this temperature is 20 kPa. Assume that gas (air) surrounding
the tube is insoluble in the liquid and that concentration of vapor A exiting the
tube is zero.
a) Calculate the partial pressure of A at the point that is half-way between the
liquid surface and the tube exit.
b) Repeat calculation assuming linear concentration profile for this process.

4. Water evaporation from a pond at 298 K does so by diffusion across an air film
2.0 mm thick. If the relative humidity of the air at the outer edge of the film is
30%, and the total pressure is 101.33 kPa, estimate the time required to drop the
water level by 2.3 cm, assuming that the conditions in the film remain constant,
i.e., diffusion path remains constant during the evaporation. Diffusivity of water
vapor in air at these conditions is 2.6*10-5 m2/s.
What is a mass transfer mechanism for this process?
Note: Relative humidity, RH = (pA/pAsat )*100, where pA is a partial pressure of
water vapor and pAsat is saturation pressure at a given temperature.

5. Do questions 6.2-9 and 6.3-2 from the textbook. For question 6.2-9 obtain
diffusivity from Table 6.2-1 in the text. For question 6.3-2 read pages 427 (from
section 6.3) to 429.
