Why focus on non-network changes?
• Although informative chapters, fact is that

many users of the ANSI/TIA-942 Standard are
focussing on the non-network portion of the
Standard
• TIA also recognizes the importance of facilities
– Page-XI states; The purpose of this Standard is to
provide requirements and guidelines for the design
and installation of a data center or computer
room. It is intended for use by designers who need
a comprehensive understanding of the data center
design, including the facility planning, the cabling
system and the network design.

• Structure of the standard has greatly

improved
• Requirements applicable to multiple locations

such as Entrance Room, Computer Room etc.
have been consolidated (seismic, lighting,
doors, signage etc.)

• The rating levels have now been very clearly

defined including alignment to the terminology
used in the data centre industry for outcome
based classification levels

• Rated-3 (a.k.a Tier-3): Concurrently Maintainable
• Rated-4 (a.k.a Tier-4): Fault Tolerant

electrical design but reference to CM and FT
allowing greater flexibility for designs including
usage of dual-coil and free cooling

72Hr for Rated-3 and 96Hr for Rated-4
– AHJ overrules the requirement
– Smaller fuel requirement with appropriate refuel

can not be applied in other countries
• FALSE: The Standard can be applied

anywhere in the world

• TIA does not certify data centers for

conformity against the requirements of the
ANSI/TIA-942 Standard
• TRUE: TIA is an SDO – Standards Development

Organization similar to ISO. TIA, ISO etc. do
not certify for conformity against their
Standards. That trust has been placed in
Certification Bodies.

• Data centers cannot be certified for

conformity against the requirements of
ANSI/TIA-942
• FALSE: Conformity based certification can be

obtained for ANSI/TIA-942 if conducted by a
Certification Body

• It is more difficult to become certified for

ANSI/TIA-942 compared to Uptime
• TRUE: ANSI/TIA-942 has a larger scope which

could be perceived as making it harder but in
essence it is representing a much better total
quality view of the data center
• FALSE: For the same scope (Electrical /
Mechanical) the same outcome based
requirements apply

example Rated-3 is the same as Tier-3 so it is
acceptable to call your data center a Rated-3

• FALSE: The outcome based principles of

Uptime and ANSI/TIA-942 are equal for the
Tier/Rating levels. However;
– Uptime has some additional requirements for

do not violate ANSI/TIA-942 requirements but
are additional
– ANSI/TIA-942 has a broader scope than Uptime
but these requirements are additional to Uptime
