Reasons for choosing ANSI/TIA-942 ?
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• The ANSI/TIA-942 issued by TIA which is a true

SDO (Standards Development Organization)
• TIA is accredited by ANSI – American National
Standards Institute, member of ISO
• ANSI/TIA-942 covers all facility related matters
of the data center
– Telecommunication
– Electrical
– Architectural
– Mechanical (includes; security, safety, fire
suppression etc.)

Why focus on non-network changes?
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Although informative chapters, fact is that

many users of the ANSI/TIA-942 Standard are
focussing on the non-network portion of the
Standard
• TIA also recognizes the importance of facilities
– Page-XI states; The purpose of this Standard is to
provide requirements and guidelines for the design
and installation of a data center or computer
room. It is intended for use by designers who need
a comprehensive understanding of the data center
design, including the facility planning, the cabling
system and the network design.

TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Structure
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Structure of the standard has greatly

improved

• Requirements applicable to multiple locations

such as Entrance Room, Computer Room etc.
have been consolidated (seismic, lighting,
doors, signage etc.)

• Variety of additional references to standards

related to cabling, grounding, firestopping,
physical security etc.

TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Ratings
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• The rating levels have now been very clearly

defined including alignment to the terminology
used in the data centre industry for outcome
based classification levels
• Rated-1 (a.k.a Tier-1): Basic
• Rated-2 (a.k.a Tier-2): Redundant Component
• Rated-3 (a.k.a Tier-3): Concurrently Maintainable
• Rated-4 (a.k.a Tier-4): Fault Tolerant

TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Ratings
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Although the Outcome Based definitions of the ratings are

identical to the Uptime Tier Topology, the coverage is far
more broader

TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Architectural
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Entrance room and computer room

requirements are now identical
– Allows for easier design and replication/re-use of
such designs
• Rated-3 (a.k.a. Tier-3) no longer requires
compartmentalization with the exception of the
Telecommunication Entrance Room
• Distance to airports no longer have a ‘less than’
requirements
• No more reference to 50-year flood-hazard

Copyright 2017
TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Architectural
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• No more physical distance requirement for car

park to data center
• Raised/access floor requirement no longer
dictates type of material but references
sufficient floor load capacity
• No more distance requirement between
UPS/Battery room and computer room
• No more distance requirement between
operations centre and computer room
• No more requirement for backup operations
centre at different address
Copyright 2017
TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Architectural
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Number of loading docks reduced to 1 with an

alternative route requirement for small/rack-
mountable equipment for Rated-4 only
• Generator/fuel storage is now allowed within
the building for Rated-4, local code and fire
rated wall requirements to be adhered to
• No fixed distance requirement anymore for
generator/fuel storage but should be
appropriate or have protective measures
• Simplified and harmonized security/access
requirements for restricted areas

Copyright 2017
TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Electrical
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Clear definition on outcome based

requirements being Concurrent Maintainable
and Fault Tolerant for Rated-3 and Rated-4
• Clear definition on utility entrance
– Rated-1/2; Single Feed
– Rated-3; Minimum 1 active, 1 standby. Same
substation allowed, self-generation allowed
– Rated-4; Minimum 2 active. Different substation,
self-generation allowed
• Just for the record; utility power company
ownership is irrelevant!

TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Electrical
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Battery strings now accommodate modular

UPS systems with shared battery strings/bank
– Standalone modules for Rated-3 and Rated-4
require individual battery banks
• Battery types for all ratings now allow 5 or 10
year design life or flywheel
• Battery autonomy for all ratings now at 10
minutes or flywheel capacity
• Battery monitoring now allows UPS monitoring
as a minimum

Copyright 2017
TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Electrical
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Batteries are now allowed inside the UPS room,

code permitted
– Preference to have them separated
• Generators for Rated-3 can be attached to
single bus
– Greatly reduces capital expenditure for larger data
centers
• Load banks are now permitted to be portable
– Rated-4 preference for permanent

Copyright 2017
TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Mechanical
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Clear definition allowing for

temperature/humidity change during switch
over as long as within equipment specifications
– Rated-3; Manual switch-over permitted
– Rated-4; Fully automated switch-over required
• Reduced indoor unit redundancy requirement
from 1 to 3-4 into 1 to 5-8
• No more prescriptive description on piping and
electrical design but reference to CM and FT
allowing greater flexibility for designs including
usage of dual-coil and free cooling

Copyright 2017
TIA-942-A vs TIA-942-B; Mechanical
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Increased fuel storage requirement with

72Hr for Rated-3 and 96Hr for Rated-4
– AHJ overrules the requirement
– Smaller fuel requirement with appropriate refuel
agreements could serve as alternative

• Fire suppression includes alternatives such

as hypoxic, water-mist etc.

About ANSI/TIA-942

Misperceptions/Confusions
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• ANSI/TIA-942 is an American Standard which

can not be applied in other countries

• FALSE: The Standard can be applied

anywhere in the world

Copyright 2017
Misperceptions/Confusions
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• TIA does not certify data centers for

conformity against the requirements of the
ANSI/TIA-942 Standard

• TRUE: TIA is an SDO – Standards Development

Organization similar to ISO. TIA, ISO etc. do
not certify for conformity against their
Standards. That trust has been placed in
Certification Bodies.

Copyright 2017
Misperceptions/Confusions
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• Data centers cannot be certified for

conformity against the requirements of
ANSI/TIA-942

• FALSE: Conformity based certification can be

obtained for ANSI/TIA-942 if conducted by a
Certification Body

Copyright 2017
Misperceptions/Confusions
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• It is more difficult to become certified for

ANSI/TIA-942 compared to Uptime

• TRUE: ANSI/TIA-942 has a larger scope which

could be perceived as making it harder but in
essence it is representing a much better total
quality view of the data center
• FALSE: For the same scope (Electrical /
Mechanical) the same outcome based
requirements apply

Copyright 2017
Misperceptions/Confusions
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• If you don’t meet all criteria of the

ANSI/TIA-942 then your data center cannot
be certified

• FALSE: Non-conformities will be classified

by Cat-1 and Cat-2 as per the ISO based
audit principles. As long as there are no
Cat-1 non-conformities present then a site
can achieve certification

Copyright 2017
Misperceptions/Confusions
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• You can’t use the term Tier for a ANSI/TIA-942

based data centre as Uptime owns Tier.

• FALSE: Uptime does not own the word Tier.

Ideally you use the term Rated/Rating when
referring to an ANSI/TIA-942 based data
centre but the outcome based principle of for
example Rated-3 is the same as Tier-3 so it is
acceptable to call your data center a Rated-3
or Tier-3 data center

Copyright 2017
Misperceptions/Confusions
ANSI/TIA-942-B The Important Non-Network Changes

• A data center cannot be certified for both

Uptime and ANSI/TIA-942

• FALSE: The outcome based principles of

Uptime and ANSI/TIA-942 are equal for the
Tier/Rating levels. However;
– Uptime has some additional requirements for
generators, mechanical infrastructure etc. These
do not violate ANSI/TIA-942 requirements but
are additional
– ANSI/TIA-942 has a broader scope than Uptime
but these requirements are additional to Uptime
requirements, not a conflict
