B. Course Description

Fluid statics; basic hydrostatic equation, pressure variation in static incompressible


and compressible fluids; forces on plain and curved surfaces, Continuity, momentum
and energy equation; Introduction to inviscid incompressible flow to include two
dimensional basic flows, dimensional analysis and similitude; Fundamental relations
of compressible flow, real fluid flow; Frictional losses in pipes and fittings;
Introduction to boundary layer theory, Introduction to open channel flow.
Types of Fluid machinery, Rotodynamic and positive displacement machinery,
Impulse and Reaction turbines; Centrifugal and axial flow pumps, Dimensional
analysis applied to Fluid machinery, Specific speed, Unit power, Unit speed, Unit
discharge, Performance and Characteristic of turbines and pumps. Cavitation and
surging, Reciprocating pumps, Gear and screw pumps, Fans, blowers and
compressors, Hydraulic transmission.

C. Professional Information

1. Overall aims of course:


1. Identify and obtain values of fluid properties and relationship between them.
2. Understand the principles of continuity, momentum, and energy as applied to fluid
motions.
3. Recognize these principles written in form of mathematical equations.
4. Apply these equations to analyze problems by making good assumptions and learn
systematic engineering method to solve practical fluid mechanics problems.
5. Describe the construction and working principle of turbines and pumps.
6. Understand about fluidics contain Hydraulic and pneumatic components.
7. Apply fundamental principles of fluid mechanics for the solution of practical
Mechanical engineering problems

8. Intended learning outcomes of the course


a. Knowledge:
1. Formulate problems involving forces on fluid at rest and fluid in motion
2. Formulate problems involving different fluid machines.
3. Determine flow rate and discharge of fluid flowing in pipes and open channel
4. Analysis of various equation of fluid mechanics by dimensional analysis
5. Determine and calculate minor & major losses in pipe flow
6. Determine performance characteristics of fluid machines (pumps, turbines
etc.)
7. Measure various properties such as pressure, velocity and flow rate using
various instruments.
8. Acquire knowledge about working principle of various fluid machines.
9. Understand the influencing design parameters.
10. Understand the principle of compressible flow and its application

b. Skills: Students will be able to work independently and as an effective


member of a team in order to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to
both theoretical and practical problems.
c. Attitude: Apply the concepts to design hydraulic machine and flow measuring
devices.
