Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)

According to western medicine
• is an injury caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist
• causes pain and numbness in the index and middle
fingers
• weakness of the thumb.
• Gets its name from the eight carpal bones in the
wrist, which form a "tunnel" through which the nerve
leading to the hand extends

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)

• Second most common industrial injury in the USA,
surpassed only by low back pain
• Recent findings suggest the condition is
exacerbated by psychological stressors…
• Conservative treatment measures include splinting,
cortisone injections, and surgery

Signs and symptoms of CTS include:

• Nighttime painful tingling in one or both hands, frequently
causing sleep disturbance
• Feeling of uselessness in the fingers
• A sense that fingers are swollen even though little or no
swelling is apparent
• Daytime tingling in the hands followed by a decreased ability
to squeeze things
• Loss of strength in the muscle at the base of the thumb near
the palm
• Pain shooting from the hand up the arm as far as the shoulder

What is Unified Acupuncture Theory and

distal needling?
• Unified Acupuncture Theory (UAT) is a unifying approach
to distal style acupuncture
• By using various systems where certain meridians interact
with each other and using imaging of the body
• We are able to needle distally from the actual problem
and get near instantaneous results
UAT incorporates the 5 main systems that Dr. Tan taught as
well as adding an additional system that is seen in
Manaka style acupuncture and that of other balance
approaches

What are the systems used for meridian

interactions
• 3 systems are based on the placement of the meridian
in relation to other meridians
– Interior/exterior (system 1)
– Full meridian (system 2)
– Closed circuit meridians (system 3)
• 2 systems are based on the Chinese biorhythm clock
– Biorhythm neighbours (system 4)
– Biorhythm opposites (system 5)
• 1 system is based on the amount the meridian gets from
the sun
– Same meridian name/ exposure to sunlight (system 6)

How to use UAT for distal needling

There are three steps to acupuncture treatments

Step 1. Identifying the affected meridian(s)

Step 2 . Choosing which meridians balance the affected
meridian(s)
Step 3. Using imaging and mirroring to chose where to put
the needles
To get the most effective results chose images and mirrors
that have a similar anatomical structure
(bone treats bone, muscle treats muscle, sinew treats
sinew, tendon treats tendon, skin treats skin, etc.)
