M5 to M100 x 6 hexagon nuts DIN
Product grade C 555
Sechskantmuttern; Gewinde M 5 bis M 100 X 6; Produktklasse C Supersedes December 1972 edition

As it is current practice in standards published by the lnternational Organization far Standardization (ISO}, the
comma has been used throughout as a decimal marker.

The revised property classes in accordance with DIN ISO 898 Part 2 can only be used for hexagon nuts in accordance
with this standard within the range up to M 39, with the hitherto applicable proof loads in accordance with DIN 267
·= -¡ ;: Part 4. lt is therefore recommended to use only hexagon nuts in accordance with DIN 972 (modified version of
a :l" ISO 4034) for new designs in this range, the proof loads of which are laid down in DIN ISO 898 Part 2. In order
> to make the necéssary distinction between types of nuts, the identification symbol of nuts in accordance with DIN

Amendments
The following amendments have been made in comparison with the December 1972 edition:
a) The standard is now no longer applicable for new designs. The use of DIN 972 (ISO nuts) has been recommended for
, this purpose.
b) The editorial presentation of the standard has been harmonized with the other standards dealing with hexagon nuts.
c) In supplement to the nominal dimensions or in lieu of the nominal dimensions, the limits of size calculated in accord
ance with DIN ISO 4759 Part 1 have been adopted in the standard.
d) The bearing tace of the nuts has been defined more precisely and has been harmonized with the other hexagon nuts
and with DIN ISO 4759 Part 1.
e) The former design g has been replaced by product grade C in accordance with DIN ISO 4759 Part 1.
t) The dimension m' has been adopted in addition to the nut height m. lt gives an indication of the mínimum height
required for the wrench to engage properly. This means that the corners of the hexagon are to be fully shaped up to
this height, i. e. the height shall never be less than the dimension emin·
g) With due consideration of the international property classes of nuts in accordance with DIN ISO 898 Part 2, the code
number for property class 5 has been completed by two vertical lines (one on either side), in conformity with the new
edition of DIN 267 Part 4. The purpose of these vertical fines is to draw attention to the lower proof load values of
the nuts (stripping strengths) in comparison with the proof loads of nuts in accordance with DIN 972 (ISO nuts) (see
Explanatory notes in this connection).
h) The technical delivery conditions have been grouped together in tabular form with the relevant references to the
appropriate DIN Standards.

Explanatory notes
In the last few years extensive investigations and trials have been carried out by Technical Committee TC 2 of the lnter
national Organization for Standardization (ISO), during which it was established that the property classes for nuts hitherto
employed (DIN 267 Part 4) and the nut heights of 0,8 d formerly considered as standard did not provide the necessary
safeguard against thread stripping for the bolted connections. This is particularly true in the case of mechanical bolt and
nut tightening methods, in respect of which the bolted connection is tightened right up to the yield point or even beyond,
into the zone of plastic deformation. The necessary conclusions have now been drawn from these findings, and the proof
loads for the individual property classes and the nut heights have been revised accordingly. Standard DIN ISO 898 Part 2
has adopted the revised property classes and is intended to supersede DIN 267 Part 4 after an appropriate transition period.
With due considera, tion given to existing drawings and documents, and to the need for interchangeability, DIN 555 has
not been converted to the ISO specifications, but instead its use has been blocked in respect of new designs, with the
recommendation that the new Standard DIN 972 (on ISO nuts) should be used in these cases. The old and new nut
heights are tabulated below for comparison and information purposes.
