Chiller Energy Use Estimating Tool

Information

This tool is intended for use in estimating chiller energy use for the PSO Custom Application when other resources such
energy modeling or chiller manufacturer's software are not available for use. The tool is based on the algorithms in the
Arkansas TRM v2. It is an estimate of typical chiller energy usage and may result in smaller energy savings estimates than
other, more project specific, methodologies. In order to be considered for a PSO incentive a Custom application for the chiller
project must be submitted and preapproved before the chiller is purchased and installed.

Instructions

1. This tool is intended for use in estimating the energy use of a single chiller installation. For multiple chiller installations,
where the chillers are all new, identical and the total chiller capacity is within 10% of the design cooling load, multiply the
energy usages on the Input tab by the number of chillers being installed before entering the energy impacts on the Custom
Application.

2. Input the requested information in the colored cells on the Input tab.
3. The required energy impact information for the Custom Application is provided at the bottom of the Input tab.
4. Information on the minimum Federal chiller efficiency requirements is provided on the Code Efficiency tab.
5. In the event that the efficiency of an existing chiller is not known, acceptable default efficiency values are provided on the
Default Efficiency tab.

6. If this tool is used for estimating the energy savings for a Custom chiller application please provide an electronic copy of
the completed tool with the Custom application.

Input Field Clarifications

Building Use - Choose the closest selection from the dropdown list.
Area Cooled - Provide the square footage of the total area served by the chiller.
Chiller Type - Make the appropriate selection from the dropdown list

Chiller Age - Provide the age (in years) for the existing chiller if the project is a chiller replacement. The High Performance
Business Program uses a 20 year effective useful life for chillers per the Arkansas TRM. For replacement of chillers older than
20 years a new code-compliant chiller will be utilized as the baseline for energy savings calculations.

Cooling Capacity - The cooling output of the chiller, in tons, at AHRI standard rating conditions.
Full Load Efficiency - The full load kW/ton or EER at AHRI standard rating conditions.
IPLV - The Integrated Part Load Value, in kW/ton or EER, at AHRI standard rating conditions.
Chiller Motor Control - Select either Single-Speed or VFD from the dropdown list as appropriate.
Project Type - Select Replacement Chiller if the proposed chiller is replacing an existing chiller. Select New Chiller if there is no
existing chiller.
