About the Course

This course intends to give an in-depth knowledge in one of the flourishing, specialized area
of Database Management System. Data Warehouse deals with the study of Multidimensional
databases, Advanced Storage Schemas and Analytical Processing of bulk data. Also, learning
of software tools for manipulating Multidimensional data and Report Generation, gives the
clarity needed to understand the applicability and importance of Data Warehouse.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the learners would have gained


• Knowledge on Multidimensional Databases and advanced Storage schemas
• Analytical processing skills in handling huge databases
• Working knowledge of Data Warehouse Tools

Course Contents:

Unit I
Introduction to Data ware housing – Need for database – Computing paradigm – Business
Paradigm – Operational and Informational data stores - Data warehouse definition and
characteristics – Data warehouse architecture.

Unit II
Data Warehousing Components - Overall architecture – data warehouse database – Sourcing
, Acquisition, cleanup and transformation tools – Metadata – Access Tools – Data Marts –
Data warehouse Administration and Management – Information delivery system

Unit III
Building a data Warehouse - Design considerations – Technical Considerations -
Implementation Considerations – Integrated solutions - Benefits of Data Warehousing
Unit IV
DBMS Schemas for Decision support – Data Layout for Best Access - Multidimensional
data model – Star schema – STARjion and STARindex – Bitmapped indexing –Column local
Storage – complex data types

Unit V
Data Extraction, Cleanup and Transformation Tools – Tool requirements – Vendor
approaches – Access to Legacy data – Vendor Solutions – Transformation engines
