2. For a lossless magnetic-energy-storage system in a singly excited system, derive the expression for the mechanical
force a function of the state variables 𝜆 and 𝑥. (6 Marks)
3. With the aid of a neat and well labelled diagram, describe functional parts in the construction of a dc machine.
(3 Marks)
4. Derive the expression for induced voltage in a dc machine hence the induced torque. (5 Marks)
5. With the aid of a neat and well labelled diagram, describe the magnetization curve of a dc machine expressed as
a function of 𝐸𝐴 versus 𝐼𝐹 for a fixed speed 𝜔𝑜 . (3 Marks)
6. A 2 pole, 50-hp, 250-V, 1200 r/min dc shunt motor with compensating windings has an armature resistance of
0.06 Ω. Its field circuit has a total resistance 𝑅𝑎𝑑𝑗 + 𝑅𝐹 = 50 Ω, which produces a no-load speed of 1200 r/min.
There are 1200 turns per pole on the shunt field winding. Calculate the speed of this motor when it is re-
constructed to have 4 poles and its input current is 100 A. (5 Marks)
7. Using relevant equations, describe the THREE methods of speed control of dc shunt motors. (9 Marks)
8. Draw the equivalent circuit of a dc compounded motor hence differentiate between cumulative & differential
motors in terms of:
(a) Terminal Voltage. (2 Marks)
(b) Input Current. (2 Marks)
(c) Field Current. (2 Marks)
(d) Net mmf. (4 Marks)
9. With the aid of a neat and well labelled diagram , describe the phenomenon ‘voltage buildup’ during starting of
a dc shunt generator. (6 Marks)
