Work Immersion is a process of teaching the students wherein they are trained
or prepared to a certain type of job or career. It is useful and simple to learn the jobs
that can be learned by watching and doing. Under it, the teacher need not explain and
analyze the job detail, as students can learn it by observing and doing it in the actual
workplace. The students are assigned in different department or areas of private
companies or in the government sectors where they are assigned or perform their work
to prepare and exposed themselves to a chosen career. It provides a valuable
experience to every student as it allows the student to discover what the real world
really is and exercise the opportunities that awaits them when they graduate from
school. It is a great privilege for me as a student to experience this kind of subject
under the K-12 Program. At first, I really felt nervous because it was out of my comfort
zone which is school but I’m really eager to enhance my knowledge and skills not only
in school but in real workplace.
My objective was to be able to obtain the necessary skills and knowledge during
my work immersion. I can also effectively apply my critical and analytical skills from my
academic training experience as a HUMSS student. It was the 3rd of December 2018,
Monday, when I first started my Work Immersion. It was located at Ladrido Street,
Lambunao, Iloilo. We were oriented to different areas and offices in the vicinity of
Lambunao Municipal Hall. We have been grouped randomly with GAS. Luckily, I’m paired
up with my elementary classmate, Renalyn Losaria. We were assigned to Accounting
Department under the supervisory of the Municipal Account, Ma’am Sofia Halago and
other 10 employees of the said municipal hall. This department serves as my main training
grounds. Our Work Immersion teacher, Ma’am Bignayan introduced us and they
responded with a warm welcome and friendly smiles. They also provide a working space
for us, a small table with three monoblock chairs.
In the morning, my schedule started from 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m and resumed at
exactly 1 p.m. that would end around 5:00 p.m. At some point, we worked overtime
especially if we’re not yet done doing the assigned tasks to us. There were also days that
we were dismissed early by our supervisors. The first day was my adjusting period. I tried
to memorize the names of all the other employees inside the office. I also observed their
working habits especially their daily routines so that I won’t be ignorant the next days.
During the first day, Ma’am Resani gave us task which we would check for any unsigned
signatures at the bottom of the voucher reports. We eagerly did it and finished it within
a few minutes. Also, Ma’am Gascon gave us another set of documents to be filed
according to its proper folders. For example, the file was a resolution then we would put
it into the folder named “Resolutions 2018” then checked the dates and number for
further organizing. For Tuesday, December 4, we were given orders to separate the
original copies of the journal entries from its duplicate copies. It took time to finish this
task because the documents were from August to November 2018, consisting hundreds
of pages. While for third day, Wednesday, filing again of documents. This time it was
transmitter letters from different barangays. We were asked to organize these letters to
its proper barangay folders. Also for Wednesday, Ma’am Kath taught us how to photocopy
a general fund with cheques attached to it. Thursday, fourth day, we segregate, again,
the original files from the duplicated copies. We also did the same for Friday. We were
happy because we were able to help Sir Keith organizing those tons of documents.
Another week started and we continued our immersion. It was already our sixth
day, December 10. We attended the flag ceremony at the Municipal Hall together with
other immersionist and employees. As we arrived at the office, we did our daily routines
for the past five days which was clean the office. There were no other tasks given to us
except photocopying the general funds with cheques on it. We were also reminded by
Ma’am Sofia that we would sell Binanog Shirts on Wednesday. Other than that, we spend
the whole Monday observing and listening to them as they worked. For Tuesday, we did
the same routines. We would clean the office in the morning and accomplished the things
they asked, like going to other departments just to give documents to be signed by a
specific assigned person. It was our last day, 12th of December and we were assigned to
sell the Binanog shirts. Ma’am Sofia entrusted us the 51 pieces of shirts with the amount
of 250php, 230php and 220php based on the brand of shirts. We got a little problem in
the inventory but we were able to solve it. It happened that one of the employee listed
her name on our list of “paid shirts” even though she meant to “reserve” the shirt. It was
supposed to be our last day but we extended another day because Ma’am Sofia told us
the she ran out of people who would sell the shirt. So, she gave us the opportunity to be
a saleslady for another day which was Thursday. And we gladly accepted it, challenging
our inner “sales talk” skills.
This Work Immersion taught me a lot of things about the work in the Municipal
Hall and how to be government employee. Being an employee is really difficult because
based on my observations there were times that they would argue about a certain issue
and complications on their assigned jobs. They were also arguments and complains from
other departments that should be resolved as much as possible. Also, I noticed that they
talked a lot about their families and they were able to treat each other as family too. Even
us, the immersionist, they treated us so kindly to the point where one of the employees
fed me with leche flan. And every time they have food, they gladly share that to us. They
also taught me to be cheerful because they still have the time to laugh despite their
serious jobs. One of the employees also boost my confidence and social skills. She told
me to “indi maghuya-huya, dapat makibagay ka man” because she noticed during my
first day that I was being shy. After that, I became friendly to them.
It also made me realize that it is really a great feeling to know what you're doing
and to love it. As a student, what I can do for now is to learn whatever I can in school,
be inspired and love the path I am going to undergo. Also, despite the short period of
my work immersion, it was still a very meaningful one. The training enriched my
confidence and created a foundation of being a good employee someday. It has a huge
impact on me as a HUMSS student. I learned to be diplomatic in both action and words.
It gave me an inspiration to be more serious and focused in studying. I was encouraged
to do more efforts in my studies. The employees and the supervisor inspired me to be
like them someday.
