Introduction
Tacitus’ great reputation owes as much to his style as to the content of
his writings, the two being fused in notable harmony. Yet the expression
‘his style’ is potentially misleading. First, just as a well-trained composer
can compose in different genres and styles, so a well-trained Latin writer
could write in more than one style. Most of this chapter will be devoted
to discussion of the historical styles found in the Histories, the Annals
and much of the Agricola, but Tacitus’ splendid Dialogus is a virtuoso
performance in a neo-Ciceronian style that is the equal of anything in
Quintilian. Second, even in his historical works Tacitus’ style varies: in
particular, speeches tend to have more pointed phrasing and less grand
vocabulary than narrative.1 Third, Tacitus’ style developed throughout
his writing career, becoming more idiosyncratic as it progressed: com-
pared to the later Annals, the earlier Agricola and the Germania are less
taut, compressed and solemn. Even the most distinctive of artists owe
much to their predecessors and the fashions of the age in which they
worked; we shall see that earlier historians, especially Sallust,2 and the
pointed style fashionable in his own times are the dominant influences on
Tacitus’ historical style.

Vocabulary
Tacitus was exceptional for the manner in which he constantly refined his
vocabulary,3 with regard to both usual and less usual words, the process
continuing even in his final writing.4 Here we shall illustrate his use of archa-
isms, poetical colouring and metaphor.
The similarity exhibited by Sallust, Livy, Quintus Curtius Rufus (in his
History of Alexander the Great) and Tacitus in their choice of vocabulary
allows the generalisation that Latin historical style was marked by frequent
employment of archaisms: e.g. the use of cunctus for the more mundane
omnis (‘all’), glisco for cresco (‘grow’) and metuo for timeo (‘fear’).5 With
such words the historians evoked the dignity of both olden times and their
own subject. Sallust famously took the cult of archaism to an extreme, alleg-
edly ransacking Cato’s works,6 and Tacitus sometimes follows him. A clas-
sic example is his use of torpedo for the more usual torpor (‘sloth’) at H.
3.63.2 (quoted below, p. 202);7 combined with the devastating sententia in
the same sentence, it powerfully evokes the exceptional inertia of Vitellius.
Poetic colour could be achieved in various ways. One was by incorpora-
tion of a scene that might in general seem poetical, for example the descrip-
tion of the storm off the coast of Germany that afflicts the Romans at A.
2.23–4.8 Another was direct allusion to a poet: an uncontroversial exam-
ple is Tacitus’ description of Nero’s playing of the female role in a mock
marriage to the eunuch Pythagoras, who is described (A. 15.37.4) as ‘one
from that herd of polluted individuals’ (uni ex illo contaminatorum grege);
Horace (Carm. 1.37.9–10) had described Cleopatra as trying to bring doom
to Rome ‘with a polluted herd of men disfigured by disease’, i.e. eunuchs
(contaminato cum grege turpium | morbo uirorum).9 A third was the use
of words associated particularly with poetry, e.g. senecta for senectus (‘old

age’); again, Sallust was a particular model, for example in his use of sonor
for sonitus (‘noise’).10
The power of Tacitus’ writing owes much to his vivid use of metaphor,11
in which he far surpasses Sallust and Livy. Part of Calgacus’ speech before
the battle of Mons Graupius provides illustration (Agr. 30.4–5):
raptores orbis, postquam cuncta uastantibus defuere terrae, mare scrutantur; si
locuples hostis est, auari, si pauper, ambitiosi, quos non Oriens, non Occidens
satiauerit; soli omnium opes atque inopiam pari adfectu concupiscunt. auferre
trucidare rapere falsis nominibus imperium, atque ubi solitudinem faciunt,
pacem appellant.
When the lands have failed them in their devastation of everything, the ravish-
ers of the world scour the sea. If their enemy is affluent, they are greedy; if he
is poor, they are eager for glory. These are men whom neither the East nor the
West has satisfied; alone among mankind they lust after wealth and poverty
with equal passion. Using false names they both term looting, butchering and
ravishing ‘rule’ and, when [or ‘where’] they make a desert, they call it ‘peace’.
In the most obvious reading of the passage the Romans are viewed as vio-
lent highwaymen (raptores, auferre, rapere), men whose unbridled appe-
tites (satiauerit, pari adfectu, concupiscunt) empty the world (defuere,
solitudinem); but raptor, concupisco and satio may be used also in erotic
contexts: the Romans rape the world.12

brevity and abruptness are due to his pen or to textual corruption. At A. 4.57.1 the
paradosis offers inter quae diu meditato prolatoque saepius consilio tandem Caesar in

For different reasons the night was restless: at their celebratory feasting the
barbarians filled the low-lying valleys and the re-echoing defiles with cheerful
song or fearful sounds; on the Roman side, there were intermittent fires and
halting voices, and the troops themselves lay next to their palisade or wan-
dered around their tents, sleepless rather than alert.

contrasting (e.g. laeto cantu aut truci sonore ~ interruptae uoces).20 Again, the
splitting of a wider entity can create antithetic point, as at H. 2.7.2:
igitur arma in occasionem distulere, Vespasianus Mucianusque nuper, ceteri
olim mixtis consiliis, optimus quisque amore rei publicae, multos dulcedo
praedarum stimulabat, alios ambiguae domi res: ita boni malique causis diuer-
sis, studio pari, bellum omnes cupiebant.
Therefore they deferred their revolt until a suitable opportunity, Vespasian and
Mucianus having recently come to an agreement, the others long since: the
best acted with love for the state; many the inducement of plunder goaded,
others their doubtful domestic circumstances. Accordingly for different rea-
sons but with equal enthusiasm all, both good and evil, desired war.21

Both ancients and moderns have used the term sententia ambiguously, to refer either to a
gnomic remark that offers a generalisation based on what has been said or written or to a
phrase that exhibits extreme paradox or epigrammatic point, this latter kind being espe-
cially fashionable in the early Principate; see e.g. Quint. Inst. 8.5. Some gnomic utterances
are phrased with point and may count as sententiae on either defi nition; but others do
not, and many epigrammatic phrases offer no generalisation. Kirchner (2001) provides an
excellent discussion of ancient defi nitions at 9–48 and of Tacitus’ use of gnomic generali-
sations at 49–192; note too Stegner (2004), esp. 7–19. Unfortunately, Kirchner’s decision
not to discuss Tacitus’ employment of non-generalising sententiae, such as those quoted
here, means that his book offers no comment on many of Tacitus’ most celebrated pointed
utterances. Sinclair (1995) discusses sententiae in A. 1–6 more from the perspective of
political thought than of style. Many sententiae feature in the discussion of Tacitus’ wit in

Annals Tacitus himself became sparing in his use of sententiae, often con-
fining them to speeches and integrating them more securely into their sur-
rounding context.30
But when Claudius was discussing with him the possibility of acquitting
Asiaticus, Vitellius in tears first recalled the length of his friendship with him
and how both of them had been respectful to Antonia, the emperor’s mother,
and then, after running through Asiaticus’ services to the state, his recent mili-
tary service against Britain and other matters which seemed suitable for pro-
curing pity – he granted him free choice in the manner of his death.
In this artful sentence the climax in the main clause is enhanced by an ele-
ment of surprise: we expect Vitellius to argue for sparing Asiaticus. Its final
word, permisit, well conveys Vitellius’ hold over his emperor.32
In contrast to the narratives of, for instance, Caesar and Livy, Cicero is
usually engaged in argument, and therefore his periods are rounder and
smoother and often fall into two parts articulated by such structures as
quamquam … tamen … (‘although … nevertheless’) and non … sed …

(‘not … but’). In the Dialogus Tacitus works in this style, and the following
is one of his more elaborate periods (7.1):
equidem, ut de me ipso fatear, non eum diem laetiorem egi quo mihi latus
clauus oblatus est, uel quo homo nouus et in ciuitate minime fauorabili natus
quaesturam aut tribunatum aut praeturam accepi, quam eos quibus mihi pro
mediocritate huius quantulaecumque in dicendo facultatis aut reum prospere
defendere aut apud centumuiros causam aliquam feliciter orare aut apud
principem ipsos illos libertos et procuratores principum tueri et defendere
datur.
For my part, if I may talk about myself, I did not pass more cheerfully that
day on which the broad band [on the toga] was conferred on me or those on
which I (a new man and born in a town of no consequence) was elected to the
quaestorship or the tribunate or the praetorship than those on which, because
of the modest attribute of being able to speak reasonably well, it was granted
to me either to defend an accused man successfully or to plead some case with
good fortune in the centumviral court or to protect and defend those very
freedmen and procurators of the emperors in front of the emperor.
This is a fine example of a massive sentence in which the main clause comes
early but the sense is never complete before the (modern) full stop at the
end.33 The main verb (egi) is the eleventh word in the sentence, but laetio-
rem has already made the reader look forward to the object of the com-
parison. For this, however, we have to wait, since Tacitus takes us through
two relative clauses, each introduced by quo. Finally quam arrives as the
thirty-fourth word. Yet the next word again causes anticipation: eos is in
the accusative and the ear and eye await an explanation of the kind of days
that Tacitus has in mind. The days are characterised in a long relative clause
expanded by three auts, in which the sense is complete only with datur, the
final and sixty-eighth word of the sentence.
Since little is said here about the Dialogus, it will be worthwhile to exam-
ine a further feature of this sentence, its amplitude in phrasing. The first part
is expanded around the structure quo … uel quo and contains one instance
of varied doubling (homo nouus et in ciuitate minime fauorabili natus) and
one of trebling (quaesturam aut tribunatum aut praeturam). In the second
part there is an expanding tricolon:
aut reum prospere defendere
aut apud centumuiros causam aliquam feliciter orare
aut apud principem ipsos illos libertos et procuratores principum tueri et
defendere datur,

et pupillum uocare, qui iussis alienis obnoxius non modo imperii, sed liberta-
tis etiam indigeret.
When Gaius Vipstanus and Gaius Fonteius were consuls, Nero postponed no
longer the crime that he had long planned, his boldness strengthened by the
length of time in which he had been ruling and his passions being aflame more
each day with love for Poppaea, who, not expecting that Nero would marry
her and divorce Octavia while Agrippina was alive, criticised the emperor with
frequent reproaches and sometimes with witticisms calling him a ward, who,
beholden to someone else’s orders, lacked not only the authority to rule but
his own freedom of action.
Here the main clause, in which it is stated that Nero no longer deferred
his crime, comes right at the beginning of the sentence. It is followed by
an appendage of forty-one words, introduced by an ablative absolute that
explains why Nero no longer deferred; after the ablative absolute comes a
nominative (flagrantior) that agrees with Nero, the subject of the sentence,
and after Poppaeae comes a relative clause that makes Poppaea the main
focus of the end of the sentence.

After the city had been captured, Vitellius was carried in a chair through the
opposite side of the palace into his wife’s house on the Aventine, so that, if he
avoided the daytime by hiding, he might escape to his cohorts and his brother
at Terracina. Then, because of the fickleness of his nature and since (such is the
nature of panic) his present circumstances were particularly displeasing to one
who feared everything, he went back into the palace which was desolate and
empty, with even the lowliest of slaves slipping away or avoiding an encoun-
ter with him. The loneliness and the silence of the place were terrifying. He
tried closed doors; he shuddered at the emptiness; and tired with his pitiable
wandering and trying to conceal himself in a shameful hiding place he was
dragged forth by Julius Placidus, a tribune of the cohort. [5] His hands were
tied behind his back; he was led with his clothing ripped, a disgusting sight,
with many taunting him but no one bewailing him: the hideousness of his end
had removed pity. One of Vitellius’ German troops who happened to pass
aimed a hostile blow at him, perhaps in anger, or perhaps to remove him more
swiftly from the taunting; or he may have been aiming at the tribune. At any
rate, he cut off the ear of the tribune and was swiftly run through. [85] They
compelled Vitellius with hostile sword-points now to lift up his face and offer
it to insults, now to see his own statues toppling over, and often to look at the
speakers’ platform or the place of Galba’s slaughter; finally they drove him
on to the Gemonian steps, where the body of Flavius Sabinus had lain. A sole
utterance indicative of a not degraded spirit was heard, when to the tribune
who insulted him he replied that he had been his commander; and then, under
a shower of wounds, he collapsed. And the crowd harried him when killed
with the same perversity with which it had cherished him when alive.
All Suetonius’ biographies are marked by their attention to detail; here the
accumulation of both the sordid and the unusual gives the writing its power.

How far the differences between Tacitus and Suetonius are to be explained by the differ-
ences in genre between annalistic history and biography cannot be determined because
of the loss (the Agricola apart) of the other Latin historical and biographical writings of
the period. Since Livy too displays some of the dignity in narrative to which Tacitus here
aspires, generic differences perhaps did play their part, but they should not be exagger-
ated: a genre lives only by being flexible and capable of adaptation, and Suetonius may
have derived his material from annalistic history (note that Dio 64.20.1–3, which contains
many of the sordid details found in Suetonius, may well be independent of Suetonius).

The most balanced account of Tacitus’ style in English is Martin (1981) 214–35,
but the distinctively solemn voice and tone of Tacitus are evoked more forcefully
by Syme (1958a) 340–63. Goodyear (1970) 35–42 remains very judicious; unlike
this essay it concentrates more on vocabulary and syntax than sentence-structure.
Löfstedt (1958) 157–80 on ‘The style of Tacitus’ is likewise sympathetic but is much
less detailed in its range of linguistic observation than his famous philological stud-
ies and concentrates on style in its widest sense. Several commentaries on individual
books have excellent discussions in their introductions: see in particular Ogilvie and
Richmond (1967) 21–31, Martin and Woodman (1989) 19–26, Damon (2003) 12–20
and Ash (2007b) 14–26. The theoretical assumptions of Draeger (1882) are dated,
but it remains an extremely useful collection of material on Tacitus’ syntax, being the
summation of much earlier research conducted by German scholars. Draeger’s book
is easily used even by those without German, but much of his material was presented
in English by Furneaux (1896) 38–74. See also the ‘Further reading’ section of the
