Bonding & Molecular Structure

Day 1 - C.3.4 – Write chemical formulas for ionic compounds and covalent compounds
given their names and vice versa. ( Nomenclature Practices – AKA – Chemistry
Grammar)
Topic Outline:
(Remember – this section does not include how the compounds are formed. That is a different
topic; don’t worry about that right now; it’s not needed here.)

Day 1 –
• Critical Recall Directions for BLOOMS – Lower Order –
UNDERSTANDING:
• New Information
Students will locate & label all missing
• Intro. To Valence information in the guided notes using
• Cation Nomenclature PowerPoint discussions.
• Anion Nomenclature

Day 2 –
• Binary Covalent Nomenclature

Day 3 –
• Binary Ionic Nomenclature

Day 4 –
• Binary Ionic Transition Metal Nomenclature (BIT Metal Nomenclature)
o Classically Called: Stock Convention

Day 5 –
• Polyatomic Ion Nomenclature
• Polyatomic Ionic Compound Nomenclature

Day 6 –
• Acid Nomenclature
o Hydrogens attached to Ions & Polyatomic Ions: Brønsted-Lowry Acids

Day 7 –
• Hydrate Nomenclature (Water infused Compounds)

***If you have missed any of these days; it is your responsibility to tell me, so you can
borrow my answer sheet & complete the missing notes during instruction time in the lab
area behind the teacher’s desk. If we have moved beyond these teaching days; you will also
be provided answer keys for notes until you can catch up your notes/homework. ***

Day 1
Atoms – single unit of matter which cannot be further divisible & remain functional
• neutrally charged Ø
• #protons (atomic number; always the same) = #electrons (subject to conditional changes)

Element – defined by the number of protons in the nucleus of a single atom (diatomic elements H,
N, F, O, I, Cl, Br – exist naturally in pairs)

Ion – atom or compound which has a positive or negative charge due to an uneven ratio of protons
and electrons.
• Cations – positively charged (Cats paw: cations positive)
• Anions – negatively charged (Antagonists - negative characters: Anions – negatively charged)

Valence – combining power of an element measured by the number of electrons total in an atom,
element or compound.
• You will need to know valence charges by looking at the periodic table to properly write
formulae & names.
• Transitions are also all positive but have ~2 valence charges associated with each element for
3B-12B.
• Left of the staircase is positive (cations); right of the staircase is negative (anions).
