PROCEDURE FOR PRESERVATION OF BOILER

OBJECTIVE
Preservation of boiler is done to protect the internal surfaces from
oxidation.

Water wall drum & Super heater system

1. The boiler is pressurized to 5 to 10 kg/cm2 with hydrazine and

ammonia treated DM water containing not less than 200 ppm of
hydrazine and sufficient quantity of ammonia to have pH value of
9.2 to 10.0 and retained at this value for preservation.
2. Drum water samples can be collected periodically say once a week
or fortnight, depending on pressure holding worthiness of the
system and tested for pH and hydrazine content , sampling point will
be low point drain.
3. Dosing shall be done from bottom drain header through a tank and
pump, hydrazine and ammonia shall be added in the tank and
mixture shall be circulated through various pressure parts till pH and
hydrazine concentration level is uniform and meeting desired values.
Ammonia and hydrazine shall be added in the tank if pH and
hydrazine concentration is less than the desired norms. Return to
tank from boiler can be from air vent of various pressure parts.

4. In case of sample water does not meet the criteria for preservation
of boiler the same is to be boosted up.
5. No welding shell is carried out on pressure parts when the system is
under preservation or the system is filled.
6. Alternatively preservation can also be done under nitrogen capping
at 0.5 kg/cm2 at vents of drum & super heaters.

 Re-heater system

1. Re-heater system should be preserved using treated DM water

containing not less than 200 ppm of hydrazine and sufficient
quantity of ammonia to have ph value of 10.0 to 10.5 with nitrogen
capping at 0.5 kgsc.
2. The Re-heater system should be filled through drain. Before
pressurizing perfect isolation of the Re-heater circuit from turbine
should be ensured.
