A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Twelve-year-old Charlie Treasure and his kelpie,

Belle, are always together — they’re either fencing,
practicing a bit of cricket or doing jobs around
their farm near Richmond, Tasmania. I just have to look at their portrait
on page 107 of our Dog Tales Special to see how much he loves her. What is
it about the dogs you have when you’re a child? Their terrible deeds become
family folklore — ours is Hugo the dachshund, who adored my mother so
fiercely that he bit any man in flared jeans who came within a metre of her
— but they are always remembered with affection. My favourite dog was
a blue heeler cross called Dawsey, who would occasionally, after a lot of
coaxing, balance on the saddle in front of me when I was riding my pony.
Ten-year-old Ava Mould and her sister Millie, eight, look like they’re
having a lot of fun feeding poddy calves and lambs, all while running
around with their beaglier, Maisy — who you can see having a well-earned
rest on our cover! In 2014, their parents, Megan and Paul, made the hard
decision to sell the much-loved family farm in South Australia to move
to the rich grazing country of Coleraine in south-west Victoria. “We
stepped into the hallway of this home and it was just like an envelope
around us,” says Megan. “It’s a really big home with high ceilings and
big rooms, and it felt so welcoming — I was quite emotional when I was
walking around it. I felt like I’d come home.”
Swags are not something you often see these days, so I was intrigued
when I heard about a couple in Western Australian making them by hand.
Gabrielle and John Andrews have walked the state’s Bibbulmun Track, and
completed other long treks, so you can be sure that one of their Murchison
River Swags or bags will last the distance. In fact, only one has ever been
returned for repairs and that was because “a lady’s horse had chewed the
zips off… I think there must have been an apple in the bag,” says Gabrielle
with a smile. This uniquely Australian story kicks off the issue on page 14.
Until next month,

says the local property market continued to rise last year, thanks to plenty
of demand from buyers and more and more people discovering the area
when looking for options outside the city. On average, 1000 people are
moving to the Illawarra region every month. “The university and new private
hospital, along with further developments, are the main drawcards in terms
of local infrastructure, as well as the plan to improve the transport link
between Sydney and Wollongong,” explains Simon.

The wedge of land they found in Fish Creek, 170 kilometres
south-east of Melbourne, ran along the top of a ridgeline
with extraordinary views of mountains and Corner Inlet.
The high, exposed location meant it was at the mercy
of the elements, and that exposure, along with the fact
that the couple have such a large extended family (they
have 13 grandchildren between them), were driving factors
in the design of their new home.
“We wanted a compact home that was sustainable, but we
also needed a house that would stretch to accommodate our
grandchildren and family,” says Jackie. The search for an
architect to interpret their brief led them to Kim Bridgland,
director of architectural firm Edition Office in Melbourne.
“Part of the design brief was their really strong connection
to place, but also protection from the severe Gippsland winds
and high sustainability,” Kim says. “Another central factor

SURPRISES ARE PART AND PARCEL of visiting gardens.

Sometimes it’s the joy of seeing a rare plant in bloom or
fabulous trees; on other occasions it might be the landscape
setting or meeting the famous owner. However, visiting
a garden on the remote Banks Peninsula in New Zealand,
there was one surprise I had never encountered before.
It was when owner Jill Simpson calmly announced she
had penguins at the bottom of the garden.
The Banks Peninsula celebrates prominent British
botanist Joseph Banks. It was Captain James Cook on
his Endeavour voyage who named the peninsula after
him (Banks was also on the ship) on February 17, 1770.
Cook thought the peninsula was an island and never did
discover that it was part of the land mass of New Zealand’s
South Island. Volcanic in origin, and about 1150 square
kilometres, the magnificent landscape is evidence of the
combined effects of glacial and water erosion.
Jill and husband Richard’s garden, Fishermans Bay,
overlooks these cold waters of the southern Pacific Ocean,
where the gales of the Roaring Forties — strong westerly
winds found south of the equator, generally between the
latitudes of 40 and 50 degrees — are ever present. They can
see the penguins, as well as fur seals and their pups, from
vantage points in their garden, 150 metres above sea level.
As the garden sits at 44 degrees south, the wind is the
determining factor in the space’s planting and design.
“Wind gusts of 140 kilometres per hour are exceptional,
but 120-kilometre-per-hour winds are not exceptional,”
Jill says. Gale-force winds are just a way of life here.
The property — about 20 minutes’ drive from the
historic French settlement of Akaroa — was originally
settled as a dairy farm in the early 20th century. Old
barns and outbuildings still huddle beneath massive
Monterey cypress trees, shaped by the prevailing winds.
Jill and Richard have owned the property for 20 years,
and some 10 years ago, rebuilt the house. Jill, an art
history graduate and a landscape designer, then set
to work reshaping the area.
“I’ve always known that gardens are part of their
surroundings and that one should take advantage of
a shared landscape when laying out a garden,” Jill says.
“But gardening against such dramatic views, as we have
here, has been transforming. It took gardening in such
a visually dominant environment to make me realise
how completely a garden is of its own place.”
With admirable clarity, Jill articulates her understanding
of the landscape she lives in. “The interplay of huge skies,
rugged wild coast and ever-present views of sea, sky and
cliffs have the strongest influence,” she explains. >

CLOCKWISE, FROM TOP LEFT Jill Simpson heads up the path from
the beach; low-growing hebe shrubs and Astelia ‘Silver Spears’ cover the
hillside, keeping the view almost uninterrupted; an iron seat, delicately
wrought, makes a great place to admire the view; frosty curls of a succulent;
mounding grasses reflect the shape of the cliffs behind; phormium leaves;
layers of foliage protect the house from the cold southerly winds.

“It’s also the continually changing light — from

gorgeous oranges, as the sun rises from the ocean,
to the hard, crisp light in the middle of the day that
bleaches out all but the strongest colours, and the soft
pinks of sunset reflected in the evening sky.”
Jill, who designed gardens for a living in Christchurch
before purchasing the Akaroa property, explains her vision
for Fishermans Bay. “Every planting in the garden is of
itself as you look at it, but it’s of the landscape, too. For
example, the hebe hummocks reflect the undulating
ridge lines of the land reaching out into the distance, and
their flowers reflect the colours of sea and sky,” Jill says.
“I keep trying to capture the essence of place in a truly New
Zealand way with low-growing shrubs and tall, grass-like
plants. But, then, I’m a gardener, so I can’t resist colour
and foliage contrast experiments as well.”
Jill and Richard are founding members of the Banks
Peninsula Conservation Trust, which they set up in 2001.
The non-profit organisation aims to help other local
landowners preserve and improve the native biodiversity
around farms and homes on the peninsula.
The structure and texture of native New Zealand plants is
best seen in Jill’s superb collection of hebes, 150 species and
cultivars at last count. “They tolerate the climate really
well, even the salt-laden winds, and some of them won’t
even grow in Auckland [North Island],” Jill says. Winding
paths lead the visitor through a garden of varied areas
— from a shady fern gully to a traditional flower border to
a wild and exposed rock garden. “It’s possible for me to just
plant with one particular area in mind and I can blend and
contrast different plants as the mood takes me,” she says.
For Jill, taking advantage of the beautiful surrounding
landscape and the sweeping views was something she
couldn’t ignore. “As far as the design of this garden goes,
whether near the house or further out, the views are always
there — you just can’t avoid the drama of the scenery,” she
says. “In the classic way, I have made sure that the plantings
become more naturalistic and less structured as you move
away from the house. I try to get the natural wetland and
forest backdrop to blend with the garden plantings as
seamlessly as I can manage.”

JOURNEY NOOSA QUEENSLAND

VISITORS TO NOOSA WILL NO DOUBT anticipate gorgeous

beaches and plentiful sunshine, yet the famed beachside
community also has a down-to-earth appeal coupled with
an exceptional food scene that often eludes trendy holiday
destinations. “I moved from Sydney and have lived up here
for 17 happy years,” says renowned local chef David Rayner,
owner of Noosaville’s Thomas Corner Eatery. “It’s a region
where we rely on dealing direct with growers.”
Along with the increasing popularity of farmers’ markets,
says David, Noosa is enjoying more and more artisan
producers. It is this abundance of regional produce, from
seafood to tropical fruits, that makes the restaurant offering
so vibrant. Thomas Corner Eatery, with its beautifully
plated dishes and outdoor deck overlooking Noosa River, is
a favourite for good reason — the eatery typifies the relaxed
sophistication that both locals and holidaymakers love.
Located at the heart of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and
approximately 150 kilometres north of Brisbane, Noosa is
situated between a river, national park and surf beaches.
The impressive natural beauty means the area was recognised
as Queensland’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2007.
There is a focus on sustainable tourism, and just 20 minutes’
drive from the beaches, a lush hinterland peppered with deft
artisan producers is deserving of its own journey.
Noosa offers rich contrasts in close proximity, the town
comprising three main areas — Noosa Heads, Noosa Junction
and Noosaville. Many would say Noosa Heads is the heart of
the region, and, despite the summer crowds, it’s an essential
starting point. At the annual Noosa Food and Wine Festival,
local and international chefs take over Hastings Street (and
the region) each May to host long lunches, cooking classes
and tepee-covered dinners under the stars.
Eateries range from informal to fine dining on leafy
Hastings Street, which runs parallel to Noosa Main
Beach, one of the few beaches in Australia that faces north.
Long-time resident Bistro C is a standout. Waterfront views
and bohemian interiors attract tourists, but its relaxed feel
and simple, thoughtful dishes — the calamari with chilli,
lime and coriander dip is a classic — keep locals coming back.
At one end of Hastings Street, a boardwalk follows a scenic
30-minute trail to the entrance of Noosa National Park,
where a swim at Little Cove — a pocket of crystalline water
framed by pandanus trees — is highly recommended.
Walkers might even spot a koala or black cockatoo along the
way. At the other end, dog-friendly Noosa Spit Recreation
Reserve is a popular spot for boats to park for the day.
Accommodation is ample and several major hotel chains
can be found at the beach. Airbnb options range from
seaside shacks to expansive villas, with The Lodge Noosa
Heads leading the way when it comes to family-friendly
properties. The three-bedroom retreat is furnished in
natural textures and coastal touches that reflect its
surrounds. An outdoor deck and barbecue mean guests
can make the most of balmy evenings. >
