Lesson Topic Prepositions of Place

The previous class introduced the students to the Definition, Types and Rules of
Previous Class

Greetings & Review


Greeting:
Greet the students. Review the vocabulary that is going to be used in the sentences and
examples for the lesson by referring to different nouns in the classroom. Examples include
words such as book, desk, chair, clock, pencil, and teacher. Initiate a game of “crisscross”
by asking the students to stand. Point at various objects in the room and ask the students
“What is this?” Request that the students volunteer their answer by raising their hands.
Choose a student with raised hands and if the student answers correctly his/her row may sit
down. Repeat this exercise until all of the students are seated. Ask a maximum of 10
questions.

Review:
Recap on the definition of what a preposition is, namely a word which usually (although not

Class Arrangement:
Students are to be seated in pairs to facilitate discussion and allow for educational activities.
Each group will receive two worksheets containing exercises that they will have to complete
later in the lesson.

Introduce - Prepositions pronunciation
List the prepositions that are going to be covered in the lesson on the board in a table, with
an additional column titled “Examples”. The prepositions will be: In, On, At, Under, Above,
Next to, Behind, In front of, Between and Around. Pronounce each word slowly and clearly
and instruct the students to echo how each word is being said.

Illustrate the meaning of each preposition by referring to items in the room to make example
sentences. Record examples such as “I am in front of the desk. Now I am in front of the
board. Now I am in front of Jane.” and move around the classroom accordingly. Use at least
two example sentences, recording the best one on the board under the “Examples” heading.
Drill pronunciation before continuing.

Presentation of Objectives:
By the end of the lesson:
1. Students should understand what prepositions are.
2. Students should be able to distinguish between the different types of prepositions.
3. Students should be able to identify the Prepositions of Place and effectively apply
them in conversation.

Activity 1: “Eye Doctor” activity chart


Place a chart on the board that is modeled after the look and feel of the Snellen chart used
by optometrists (see example below).

Activity 2: Living room activity worksheet


Students are given a worksheet containing an image of a living room that is filled with

objects and instructed to complete the sentences by selecting the correct preposition from
the box. Students complete this worksheet in pairs. The students will be asked to volunteer
their answers by show of hands one student will answer on behalf of each pair.

Activity 3: Prepositions of Place crossword


Students are given a worksheet containing a crossword and a series of images of a box and
a ball from which they must answer the crossword. Each image illustrates a different
Preposition of Place between the box and the ball. This worksheet must be completed

individually. Students may refer to the list of prepositions on the board to aid with spelling.

Evaluation of Objectives:
Once students have completed the crossword from Activity 3, request that they select a
colourful pen and explain that you are now going to mark the crossword together. Ask the
students to volunteer the answers by show of hands and select one student to answer each
question and construct a sentence explaining the image e.g. “The ball is in front of the box”.
Use this assessment to identify student’s errors/omissions and understanding of the work

they have just covered.

Summary & Closing


Reflect on the objectives for the lesson by referring back to the table on the board and
adjacent example sentences. Recap by going around the room and pointing out various
objects and nominating a student to answer the question by indicating the correct
preposition. Ask a maximum of 5 questions.

Inform students that in the next lesson they will be introduced to Prepositions of Time.
Next Class Explain that these words are similar to the word’s covered in this class but that they differ in
meaning because of the noun with which they are being linked.
