R+J Final Essay

William Shakespeare author of Romeo and Juliet, tells the tragic love story of two teens
named Romeo and Juliet. The teens love each other, but their families are enemies,
which prevents them from being together. In the end, the two lovers feel the only way to
be together is in death. Throughout the play, Shakespeare expresses his belief that
conflict have severe consequences through character interactions and conflicts.

To begin with, Shakespeare proves that conflict have severe consequences through
character interactions. For example, in Act 3 Scene 3 Friar Laurence to Romeo says,
“You committed a crime that is punishable by death.” (lines 1-70) This shows that
conflict has severe consequences because Romeo killed Tybalt for revenge of what he
did to Mercutio but his punishment is to leave Verona but he rather dies because he
wouldn’t see Juliet anymore if he’s banished. Although in Act 3 Scene 1 Mercutio to
Tybalt says, “The thrust of a sword will end this surrender.” (lines 69-70) Eventually,
Mercutio started to fight Tybalt because Mercutio wanted to defend Romeo from him.
This is severe consequence because Mercutio and Tybalt started to fight and forward
something bad happens. In conclusion, Shakespeare uses Mercutio and Tybalt death to
show that conflicts have severe consequences.

In the beginning, Shakespeare proves that conflict has severe consequences through
character interactions. For example, in Act 3 Scene 1, Benvolio says, “The prince will
give you the death penalty if you get caught.” (lines 59-110) This shows conflict has
severe consequences because Romeo loses his best friend then becomes a big
tragedy to Romeo so, he seeks revenge and kills Tybalt. This is a severe consequence
because there is nothing more severe than death and Romeo will be punished.
Secondly, in Act 3 Scene 1, Romeo to Friar Laurence says, “What punishment did the
prince announce?” (lines 1-70) Therefore, this also shows conflict have severe
consequences because Romeo killed Tybalt of what he did to Mercutio and had a
punishment. Being banished is more severe to Romeo than death because he can’t be
with Juliet. In conclusion, Shakespeare uses the death of Mercutio and Romeo’s
disappointment in banishment to show conflicts have severe consequences.

Continually, conflicts has severe consequences through more examples of conflicts. For
example, in Act 1 Scene 1 Prince said “If you ever cause a disturbance on our streets
again, you’ll pay for it with your lives.” (lines 71-94) This shows conflict have severe
consequences because prince is giving a warning to them if they keep fighting again.
Prince said that their punishment will cause their lives. Similarly, in Act 3, Scene 1
Chorus said “My dear friend was killed while defending me from Tybalt’s slander.” (lines
59-110) This shows conflict has severe consequences because Mercutio wanted to
defend Romeo from Tybalt and this relates with the conflict when Romeo got punished
when he seeked revenge to Tybalt. In conclusion, Shakespeare uses Romeo’s action
between conflicts have severe consequences.

In conclusion, Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet demonstrates that conflict has
severe consequences through character interaction and conflict. As seen previously,
character interaction involved death, arguments, and vengeance. The characters in the
play often got into conflict which led to emotions of jealousy and anger. We also see
that conflict has severe consequences such as a big tragedy to Romeo that made him
seek revenge to kill Tybalt and then gets punished to be banished from Verona then he
couldn’t see Juliet. Overall, it is a play of drama and sadness in which many characters
run into conflict.
