Line and Balance Guided Notes

Balance: A Principle of art concerned with visual weight

3 Kinds of Balance
Symmetrical (Mirror Symmetry, Formal)
Asymmetrical (Informal, Approximate)
Radial

Symmetrical
Image is divided by a central axis an imaginary line that runs through
a work of art. Image is identical on both sides of the central axis. LIKE A
REFLECTION IN A MIRROR
Asymmetrical
Objects within an image have the same visual weight: contrast and
emphasis that draws our eye to an object but are not exactly
identical. ex) a group of small shapes offset by one large shape
Radial
Design elements emerge from a central point in the image and radiate
outward from that point
Radiate: diverge or spread from or as if from a central point.

Line: an element of art that represents an artist’s

mark making. A point moving through space. Can
be horizontal, vertical, wavy, curved, dotted, bold
etc.
