GOAL

Setting up Summary Accounts FAQ

SOLUTION

1. What is a summary account ?

A summary account is an account whose balance is the sum of balances from multiple detail accounts
-Used to perform online summary inquires, as well as speed the processing of financial reports, mass
allocations, and recurring journal formulas
-Summary templates are used to create summary accounts.

2. What are the 3 pre-requisites for defining summary templates?

Define Parent/Child Hierarchy

Setup > Financials > Flexfields > Key > Values
Define Rollup groups
Setup > Financials > Flexfields > Key > Groups
Assign Parents to Rollup groups
Setup > Financials > Flexfields > Key > Values

While defining the parent accounts, Allow Budgeting and Allow Posting must be set to NO.

3. Can you have a child belonging to more than 1 parent?

Yes - as long as the child ranges are not overlapping

Rollup Groups

4. What is a rollup Group ?

Setup > Financials > Flexfields > Key > Groups

-Collection of parent values
-Allows you to group related parent values for creating summary templates

5. What does 'Unfreezing Rollup Groups' do?

(Setup > Financials > Flexfields > Key > Segments)

When this is done, you will be able to quick pick on the Rollup Group name on the Define Segment Values
form.
Summary Templates

6. What does the value "D" mean?

Your template creates and maintains a summary account for every detail segment value. This value
creates the most summary accounts of any template value
See Note:1013629.6

7. What happens when you define all D's?

A template using D values for each segment will duplicate your chart of accounts, and may corrupt your
data

8. What does the value "T" mean?

Your template creates and maintains a summary account that sums balances of all detail segment values.
This value creates the fewest summary accounts of
any template value

9. What happens when you define all T's?

A template using T values for each segment will have zero balance if your general ledger is in balance

10. Should value "T" be defined prior to defining summary templates?

YES. If you enter T for a segment, all summary accounts created by the template will have the value T for
the segment. Therefore, the value T must be defined and enabled for a segment value. It should be
defined automatically but if you
need to define it manually make sure it is a parent and do not assign children.
See Note:1063199.6

Add/Delete Summary Program

11. Does Add/Delete Summary Program dynamically create accounts that meet the summary
template criteria?

NO, It just groups the existing accounts to meet the summary template criteria
See Note:1069467.6

12. How many concurrent requests are generated when you run the Add/Delete Summary
Program?

4 requests: 1 for the parent and 3 for child accounts

Maintain Summary Template Program

13. If you add a new detail account, what needs to be done to update the data?

Run the Maintain Summary Template program

Reports > Request > Standard
You can also schedule to run this program automatically
This program updates summary templates only for the current set of books.
See Note:1098.1

14. If a change is made to one of the parents that are assigned to the Rollup group, what
needs to be done to ensure summary accounts are updated?

You need to drop and recreate the summary template

See Note:1063533.6

Summary Accounts and performance

15. How can you improve the posting performance?

GL Optimizer
Maintain Summary template program
It is better to run Maintain Summary Template program before posting

16. Do summary accounts increase posting performance?

No. Summary accounts actually slow posting performance because they add more combinations to
gl_code_combinations which is one of the tables posting uses in the validation process. The more
combinations to check, the slower the process will be.

17. Do summary accounts increase reporting performance?

Yes, this grouping of accounts cuts down on the number of individual selects made to the table, therefore
increasing performance

Summary Account Inquiry and Reports

18. Will the history of an old summary template be in Summary Account Inquiry?

NO. When you drop a summary template, and reassign the child values, Summary Account Inquiry does
not save the history of the previous accounts
See Note:1013082.102

19. What reports are available ?

Chart of Account Reports:

Account Hierarchy
Charts of Accounts Listing
Rollup Detail Listing
Rollup Range Listing
Segment Values Listing.
