Lab 2: Define BOMs for Assemblies

Scope
Now that you have defined your items in both your Vision Operations (V1) organization
and your manufacturing plant (M1), you can proceed to define your BOMs.
A BOM is a representation of an assembly and its components. On the top, you ‘draw’
the assembly and beneath it, its components. Each BOM is represented as a single level
structure. This is the easiest way of visualizing them.
Thus far, you have 2 BOMs to define within your application. Lets proceed to create
them in your master organization and then copy them into M1. Of course you could
create them directly into M1, but is advisable to keep all your ‘original’ BOMs in the
master organization. By doing this, if you later decide to manufacture the same
assemblies in any other manufacturing plant you would have the original BOMs and
would be able to copy then into the respective organization.
The following are the 2 BOMs you want to create in your Vision Operations V1
organization and then copy them into M1.

XX_WAGON_ATO

WOOD_SIDE
XX_BUCKET_OPT
FRONT_ASSY REAR_ASSY (Qty =2)
(Mand/Excl)
Optional

Prerequisites
1. Lab 1: Define Assemblies and Components

Procedure
1. Sign on into your master organization V1 or change organization to Vision
Operations.

Figure 3: Selecting V1 as your Master Organization

2. Navigate to the Define Bill of Materials form (Bill of Materials + Bills + Bills).

2
3. Enter the first of your 2 BOMs. In the top portion of the screen, you will enter the
XX_BUCKET_OPT assembly and in the bottom its components. The order does
not matter. Sequence 10, 20, 30 is arbitrary and automatic. Remember to enter
the correct Attributes (Optional and/or Mutually Exclusive) and the correct

quantity where applicable. Don’t forget to save your BOM after you entered
your assembly and components.

3
4. Now enter your XX_WAGON_ATO BOM in the same way and commit your
changes. Don’t forget to flag these components as Optional with the correct
quantities.

5. Lets verify your BOM using the Indented BOM screen (Bill of Materials + Bills +
Indented Bills). On the Find Indented Bills form that pops up, enter your
XX_WAGON_ATO BOM, then hit the Find button.

6. Notice your three products are shown along with the option class. Now expand
your BOM so you can verify its lower levels components (see if your quantities
are correct). Use the buttons provided for this effect:

7. Once you have revised your BOMs and confirmed they are correct within your
Master Organization V1, proceed to change organization back to M1 (Inv:
Change Organization) and copy the 2 BOMs from V1 into M1.

6
8. Once in M1, navigate to Bills define form (Bill of Materials + Bills + Bills).
Then enter your first assembly and using the ‘Special menu’, ‘Copy Bill from…’
function, you will copy your XX_WAGON_ATO planning BOM from V1 into
M1.

7
9. Do the same with the remaining BOM and then verify them as you did within
your Master Organization, using the Indented BOM form.
10. Print the Bill of Material Structure Report for your XX_WAGON_ATO item with
its 4 levels. Choose to output the Order Entry Details. Review it and keep it
together with your course material.

Notes
1. You should have 2 BOMs in your master organization V1 and the same 2 BOMs
in your manufacturing organization M1.

Questions
1. What is the name of the table in which the assembly gets stored when you saved
your BOM? :
2. What is the name of the table that stores the components?:

3. Which column links both tables? : (Hint:

use the Examine utility to browse column names and values in both zones).
4. Write a query that list the items and the inventory organization in the BOM for
the XX_WAGON_ATO and XX_BUCKET_OPT.
5. Record the BILL_SEQUENCE_ID, ORGANIZATION_ID from the
BOM_BILL_OF_MATERIALS for both BOM’s.
