Our Church Staff

We are a multigenerational, multi-ethnic
family-oriented church in the heart
of Metrowest. As an historic church steeped in the New
England evangelical (=Gospel-Centered) tradition of
renewal and revival, we seek to make disciples of all ages
for Gospel ministry in a pluralistic context. We are a
sending church; innovating and creating opportunities to
proclaim the Gospel both at the local and global level.

Senior Pastor’s Report
As you read this Annual Report, our
hope and prayer is that we will together
pause and give thanks to the Lord “for his
steadfast love endures forever.” We give
thanks for all the volunteers, staff, ministry
and leadership teams for their service
and commitment to the Lord Jesus at
Trinitarian Congregational Church. Our
mission remains unchanged and crystal
clear: to know the Lord Jesus and to make
Him known. We are committed to the
proclamation of the Gospel, to ourselves
as sinners in need of redemption, to
our neighbors here in Metrowest and
throughout the world. We look forward to
the Day when the “earth will be filled with
the knowledge of the glory of the LORD
as the waters cover the sea” (Hab. 2:14).
Major milestones in 2018 include an
extraordinary bequest, with which we were
able to use to complete the restoration of
Bradford with much needed upgrades
(see Facilities Report). The first high
school of Wayland is becoming a multi-
purpose space for educational purposes.

Executive Director’s Report
Accomplishments and Updates
2018 was another busy year, full of the usual
church calendar of events, many ministry
programs and lots and lots of meetings! I
currently attend the Board, Finance and
Facilities committees meetings; however, I’m a
“voice with no vote” member of each of these
committees.
We have had many outside events this year
including: monthly meetings of the Wayland
Garden Club, Red Cross blood drives, an
annual ice cream social for Paramenter’s
bereavement camp, an annual youth retreat
for Refuge Temple of Boston, the 20th
Anniversary of the Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln
Domestic Violence Roundtable, an annual
SAPA-NE Chinese New Year celebration
and many others. I have turned over more of
the day-to-day detail management of these
non-TCC events and building rentals to Jen
Calverley and Nancy Griffin, for which I am
very grateful!
We have a terrific Administrative and Facilities’
support staff and as their supervisor, I am
extremely grateful! Nancy Griffin and Jen
Calverley do a fantastic job sharing the role of
Administrative Assistant, covering the office
weekdays from 9A-2:30P. Mary Ayotte is our
terrific part-time book keeper; any questions
on budgets or billing should be directed to
Mary. Aimee Mury is our fabulous part-time
Contributions Recording Officer; she oversees
the volunteer counters as well as manages all
incoming contributions and the Faith Promise
records. We are blessed to have the Lozano
brothers as part of our Facilities’ Management
team. They are assisted by Drew Wolff, our
“Super Volunteer.”
We did have one personnel change this year.
Eddie Lozano, who has worked part-time
for TCC for eight years, was phased out of the
regular weekly schedule. We had begun to
realize that as we become more and more of
a multiuse space, with more set ups and take
downs, we needed additional hours/help on
a weekly/daily basis. Eddie was only able to
give us about 15 hours a week because of his
own expanding outside business.

out on various projects, but this 28 hour a week
position is now filled by his brother, Rene.
For over a year now, TCC has accepted on-
line giving through our website and via text
messaging. This giving option, although nice
to have, did not produce a significant upswing
in revenue. In 2018, less than 2% of our annual
donations came in through this method. Please
note that TCC incurs a 2.65% fee for every credit/
debit card donation made, or a .90% fee if the
donation is from your checking account plus a .35
cent fee per any transaction. Depending on the
size of your donation, these fees can add up. It is
possible to set up giving through your bank’s
on-line bill payment service and there is no
charge to you or TCC for this service.
We accomplished so much in Facilities this
year, finishing up Phase II of the Restoring
in Faith Campaign (The Bradford Hall
restoration – thank you to Ken Vona, KVC and
Dan Williams), as well as Phase III (Senior
Pastor housing – a big thanks to Marty Bodley)
and the start of Phase IV (the demolition of
the Parsonage and Ewing and the creation of
more green space as well as some additional
parking.) You can read more details in the
Facilities report.
A comprehensive Safety Plan for TCC is still a
work in progress. I’ve come to fully realize the
large scope of this job and am hoping to work
with the Facilities Team in the coming year
to figure out how to best implement a safety
plan that still allows our church to be open
and welcoming. This coming year, we’d also
like to include the maintenance and upkeep
of 62 Warren Road, the new parsonage, as
part of TCC’s overall facilities maintenance
responsibility, which may mean reassessing
our current approach to facilities operations.

and communication of the weekly public
and private prayer concerns since I began as
Pastoral Care Director at TCC back in 2004.
It’s been a privilege to watch God at work, even
when the answers to some of the prayers were
not as I personally would have wanted them
to be.
Challenges
Unfortunately, our “new building” is getting
old! Ten years old this year! Systems that
were state of the art are now obsolete, and
each year this building will require more care
and expert maintenance. We’ve seen what
putting off maintenance can do, as evidenced
by the deteriorated condition of Ewing and the
parsonage and we don’t want to make the same
mistakes again with this building, Bradford
Hall and 62 Warren Rd. We will continue to
explore more efficient ways to maintain our
properties, so we may better use and protect
the gifts God has entrusted to us.

Sunday Morning Worship Service
Our group is enjoying the recently renovated
Bradford building! The new stage and sound
system have certainly helped enhance the
efforts of our leadership team to effectively
teach God’s word and disciple students,
especially through our Sunday morning
worship services. On Sundays, after enjoying
pancakes and games in our first floor
common room, we then move upstairs for
announcements, mixers, some worship songs
led by our student band, and a message.
This year the student band has provided some
amazing leadership for our group. In addition
to creatively leading songs like “Oceans,” “This
is Amazing Grace” and “Our God,” they’ve
introduced other songs like “Reckless Love”

and “O Come to the Altar.” Other students
and volunteers also helped lead the service by
delivering announcements, praying, reading

slides during these worship services.
High School Small Groups
On Sundays our high school students and
leaders come together to share meals, play
games and study God’s Word in community. In
a small group setting, we strive to unpack the
Sunday morning message reflective discussion
in pursuit of knowing God better. Kate and
Brandon Unruh, Christie Smethurst, and
Steven and Ashley Weiss have done a fantastic
job mentoring these groups!
Student Leadership Program
This program takes an intentional approach
towards training and challenging our yearly
group of high school students serving in our
middle school ministry. During this past year,
Ian Armstrong, Megan Armstrong, Mackenzie
Barber, Leilan Bennett, Olivia Bodley, Abby
Calverley, Grace Johnson, Luke Johnson,
Calvin Neprud, Emily Pomphrett and Miranda
Pomphrett dedicated at least three hours every
Wednesday evening to grow as leaders and

encourage younger students. Every Wednesday
evening, this group of student leaders gathers
together for dinner and discussion prior to
Middle School Midweek.
Middle School Midweek
On Wednesday nights, middle school students
continue to bring energy. After connecting
with friends and leaders in Bradford Hall, our
group heads to the gym for games like Grog,
Extreme Kickball, Ninja Night, Crack-a-bout,
and more.
After a game and an occasional recap of
Sunday’s message, students head to their
respective small groups (separated by gender)
for fellowship and discussion. Asa Foster,
Melanie Barber and Anthony Spinale, along
with those in the Student Leadership Program,
have helped provide wonderful leadership for
this group!

retreat was led by the band The Great

of course, the incredible camp staff and

Middle School and High School Boys
Retreat at Camp Berea
Last August, a group of middle and high
school guys traveled to Berea for our
annual retreat. Every year our group has
an incredible experience at Berea. The
camp is a fun-filled environment where
students and leaders are challenged to
grow in their relationships with Jesus. We
had daily devotionals and discussions
on discipleship, worshipped with an
amazing band, and processed challenging
messages from our camp speaker. This
week at Berea was a great encouragement
to our group!

Coffee Hour
Our church year was full of good food, lots
of coffee and tea, people getting to know
each other and bonding while serving TCC’s
congregation. Stephen Ministers supplied
their usual huge spread of food every other
month. Thank you, Dave & Chris Brooks. They
took a well-deserved break over the summer.
Two small groups came back with command
performances like The Weston/Wayland and
The Bridgeman Small Group. Thank you, Sue
Wiggill and Yan Zheng.
Two new small groups, The Kim’s (led by
Hey-Sung & Sam Kim) and The Millpond
(led by Jim Spinale), began serving the church
community this year. Welcome aboard.
Individuals stepped up, to my delight, and
found out it was an easy act to do. Thank
you to Lidet Million, Grant Chizek and Dave
Newman. I’d like to shout out a huge thank you
to Peter Kidd who fills in whenever he sees no
one making coffee (which means frequently)
and Jim Spinale who always makes a pot for
the music/worship team when he drives me
there for 8A rehearsal.

K-Tog
A knitting and crocheting group which meets
Monday mornings 10A-12P and evenings
7-9P.
We continue to knit little red hats for newborn
infants, benefiting the mothers and babies,
through the American Heart Association.
This year we will be knitting and crocheting
lap blankets, per the request of the Deacons
at TCC. So thrilled that we will be partnering
with them on this project! We will be twice
blessed.
We also have the opportunity to knit for
area women, who have been diagnosed with
breast cancer, and are having a masectomy.
These knitted “breasts” are lighter and
more comfortable than the prosthetic ones
implanted. We donate them to area hospitals.
They are called “Knitted Knockers” (www.
knitted knockers.org).
A woman who was diagnosed with breast
cancer had the idea to knit these and the
wonderful idea spread.
We continue to keep our “sticks” humming.
We are happy to create items to benefit others.

Men’s Ministries
In 2018, we kicked off a Men’s Forum Dinner
Series. The Forum is a chance to bring men
together to have a great meal, an opportunity
to fellowship together, and consider a
contemporary Christian topic from a known
speaker.
Men’s Forums saw great turnout!
On May 2nd, we had Dr. Kenneth Barnes,
speak on the topic of Redeeming Capitalism;
which is also the name of his book that was
published in 2018. In these times of corporate
greed and executive misconduct, is there an
opportunity to ‘reclaim the moral roots of
capitalism for a virtuous future?’ Dr. Barnes
challenged us with a thoughtful discourse of
the state of capitalism through the last two
generations. And … the Steak Tips were done
to perfection.
On October 3rd, David Ro, Director of the
Christy Wilson Center for World Missions at
Gordon-Conwell, and a leading evangelist in
China, joined us for a Men’s Forum Dinner. His
talk, “A Suffering Church Reaching a Suffering
World” discussed the challenges and strategies
for winning new Christians, specifically
in mainland China. Dr. Ro talked of the
passion and the rapid growth of the Chinese
Church, amidst the contemporary persecution
strategies of the Chinese government. These

persecution strategies include loss of stature,
loss of job, and prison. It was another evening
of thoughtful presentation and discussion on
how Christ’s kingdom is being built around
the world. And … Paul’s preparation of the
marinade on the pork chops received rave
reviews.
In addition, Sam Jackson kicked off a Weekly
Basketball Night. Sam has men of all ages on
the court, and it’s a blessing to burn off calories
and have Christian fellowship together at the
church.

Mom to Mom
At Mom to Mom, we strive to be and to make
disciples of Christ through our mission: to
educate, encourage, and equip women for
the very important, yet often tough job of
parenting, through biblically-based, practical
teaching and supportive interaction in
small groups to foster growth not only in
our parenting skills but in our wholeness as
women.
We are thankful for our Planning and Children’s
Ministry Teams, who enable us to serve nearly
30 women (representing 60+ children, ages
birth through 20) and their preschool children
on Friday mornings for a 22-week series of
informative and practical talks, as well as
hands-on learning and community service.
Women from many different Metrowest towns,
from within the TCC community, as well
as from other churches and from no church
affiliation gather to learn, be challenged, and
grow, as well as to experience the fellowship
that this vibrant outreach ministry offers.
The Children’s Ministry of Mom to Mom
shares God’s love through Bible teaching,
music, crafts, and small group activities. For
those children who also participate in TCC’s
Children’s Ministry on Sunday mornings, it is a
great opportunity to review and reinforce the
lessons learned on Sunday, as well as to play
with their friends from Live the Adventure. It
is a joy to see the children beginning to build
community with other members of their
church family!

Men’s Forum with David Ro (Oct 2018)
In addition to the weekly lectures, we offer a
workshop day each semester, when the women
of Mom to Mom can build community through
art and craft projects, exercising or cooking
together. Beginning in Fall of 2018, we are
making an effort to engage in community
service more regularly. To that end, Sarah
Ehrhorn has taken on the role of community
service coordinator, and we have been grateful
for her leadership and organization in planning
a meal for 50+ residents of Bridge House in
Framingham.
We pray for God’s guidance: that we may
create a welcoming, nurturing environment
for women and children throughout the
Metrowest area. We pray for growth: that
women from within TCC as well as from other
churches or from no church affiliation might
learn about, attend, and invite their friends to
our meetings. We pray for the women who
attend: that they will learn, build community,
and grow in faith. We pray that we might be
partners in the Gospel: that we may encourage
one another, build each other up, enable each

Saturday Morning Men’s
Breakfast and Bible Study
The Saturday Morning Men’s Breakfast and
Bible Study has been meeting since 1956. A
book of the Bible is studied over a period of
weeks with a focus on applying what is learned
to our everyday lives. Breakfast is prepared by
one of the attendees and enjoyed in Phillips
Hall except when other events necessitate
meeting upstairs. In 2018, attendance was
between three and seven with highs of nine
to ten. Some men attend a few times a year
and some rarely miss a session. We welcomed
Jerry Levins, Glenn and Cornelius, a student
at Gordon-Conwell as new regular attendees.
Regretfully, we lost the long time leadership
of Ernie Bauder as he moved to Ashland. All
are welcome to join us each Saturday at 8-9:30A.

Currently, we are examining ways in which
selected Psalms point forward to Christ’s
Person and Work. Most recently, we have

that, the Gospel of John.

Women’s Bible Study
At WBS, we strive to be disciples by providing
an opportunity for women to find out more
about Jesus, by providing a place of community
for women of all ages and stages of life, and by
praying for them. We strive to make disciples
by teaching people how to search and live in
God’s word themselves.
We are studying 1 and 2 Corinthians, again
using the inductive method. Our goal this year
is to practice not only the skills of observation
and interpretation, but particularly the
crucial skill of application. We are doing this
by learning to recognize what the “timeless
truths” are in our passage and thinking about
how this affects how we operate in our world.
Rachael Frase continues to be our much-
appreciated, highly skilled teacher. She started
out the year by taking us through a 2-week
workshop on how to apply the methodology.
When we are finished with 1 Corinthians, we

Sports Outreach Trip (San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala)
In July, Kyle Smethurst led a group of nine high school and college students back
to Guatemala for a one-of-a-kind trip format. Each morning the team competed
in town basketball and soccer tournaments against local schools—Colegio Tierra
Prometida (CTP), IMED, INEB and Pavarotti. In front of large local crowds, our
group competed and shared faith testimonies at halftime breaks. Each afternoon
the students led soccer clinics for local elementary school students; once again,
our team shared testimonies of encouragement with the kids.
In addition, the team helped build a two-bedroom home for a local field worker,
Clemente, and his wife Adelia and their two kids.

Students on the Guatemala Mission Trip ran a VBS

A new event last year was a mission trip for adults
to the country of Haiti, where we learned about
the country and provided technical enrichment
to students at C-TECH. This is a growing post-
secondary college that, at this point, provides high
quality Christian education in nursing and electrical
engineering technology. In the near future, other
vocational studies will be offered. We expect to
return there again this spring. Albert and Richard,
two engineers who taught a hands-on enrichment
course, are already planning what they can teach this
next time. If you are interested in joining them in this
work, or others of us as we support the mission of
C-TECH, please let us know. We would be very glad
to include you.
Carolyn Lippmann
Project Angel Tree, part of Prison Fellowship, provides Christmas gifts to
children of incarcerated parents. Through Prison Fellowship and Angel Tree,
the Gospel is presented both to the caregiver and the children. Bibles are
also given. TCC has been involved in this wonderful ministry for 35 years.
Through the generosity of TCC members we were able to provide gifts to
children in the Metrowest area. This year’s highlight for Julio and I was a little
girl so excited that she could not wait until Christmas to open up her gift
from her parent. Many thanks to the Hernandez family and my wife Nancy
for their help this year.

We also collected 57 coats for the Coats for Kids program, over 1300 diapers
for our diaper drive in September, hundreds of socks for EGC’s starlight
ministry sock drive, and a whopping 163 shoeboxes were prepared by TCC
families to send around the world as Christmas presents for Operation
Christmas Child!
Serve 72: Middle School Service Blitz (Metrowest and Boston)
In July, our group of more than 10 students and leaders gathered together for
a few days of compassionate service. This “72 hours” of service and reflection
was inspiring! During the week we served at the Pearl Street Café and on the
Boston Common, wrote letters to TCC’s missionary partners and more.
Not only did we serve extensively, but we took multiple daily opportunities
to journal and discuss our experience, aided by the “Becoming a Good
Samaritan” video Bible study. We thoughtfully processed our experience,
reflecting on God’s heart for those in need and our mission to share the
Gospel in word and deed.

Care Ministries
Deaconate, Memorial Services, Grief Group,
Peacemaking Team, Stephen’s Ministry, and Visitation
Deacons
The deacons were blessed again this year
with the opportunity to partner with our
congregation to offer God’s love to our church
family and community.
Due to the generosity of the congregation,
we were able to help many individuals and
families with financial needs this year. The
deacons prayerfully considered each financial
request, trying to discern God’s will, striving
to be good stewards and to be aware of the
overall spiritual and financial well-being of the
individual.
The loss of loved ones in our church family
this year has been painful. The deacons have
spent many hours in prayer, together and
individually, lifting up those who are suffering.
We continue to prepare and serve communion
each month and we are further blessed to be
able to join Rev. Allan Baldwin in delivering
home communion to those who are unable to
attend the service.
Through the flower donations and beautiful
arrangements made by the Flower Guild, we
have been able to deliver flowers to people and
help brighten their day.
We have deacons hoping to pray with you after
each service! Please come forward if you need
prayer for anything great or small.

Memorial Service Receptions
The mission of this ministry is to provide a
reception, following a memorial service or
funeral, for those grieving the loss of a loved
one. At these receptions we open our church
home and offer hospitality to family, friends,
and visitors. This time is an opportunity for
those associated with TCC to demonstrate
care and concern for one another. Together
with the help of the Holy Spirit,
we demonstrate the love of God in
action.
We are grateful for the assistance of
many volunteers as this ministry provided 6

Grief Group
Facilitors Jane Stankiewicz and Kathleen
Barrett led a second cohort of a Grief Group
during the spring of 2018. Using the book
Understanding Your Grief by Alan Wolfelt as a
framework, a group of eight, including leaders,
came together weekly for twelve weeks to
support and encourage one another around
each one’s unique grief journey; each member
had experienced the death of a loved one.
Sharing both sorrows and laughter, the group
quickly bonded and became a source of hope,
strength and comfort for the participants.
Following the disbandment of the group, some
members joined an ongoing grief support
group led by Jen Calverley. Many in the group
expressed deep gratitude to have had a safe,
understanding place in which to explore and
process their grief in a faith based community.
Though another cohort was offered in the
fall of 2018, no interest was expressed and
therefore a new group did not form. However,
based upon interest by those desiring support
in their grief experience, another group may
form in the future.

In January we hosted two, one-day Conflict

Coaching workshops taught by David and Judi
Glidden, Certified Christian Conciliators
from the ministry of New Peace Network in
Alton N.H.
Then from April through June we conducted a
12-week adult Sunday School class using The
Peacemaking Church study material which
was taught via DVD by Ken Sande, the founder
of Peacemaker Ministries; whose goal it is to
“equip and assist Christians and their churches
to respond to conflict biblically.”
Presently we are working with Judy Steidl,
COO of ICCpeace. TCC will be the host
church for an ICCpeace 2-day Conflict
Coaching Training on May 20-21, 2019. This
training is open to all who desire to pursue
being the peacemakers Jesus exhorts us to be
in Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called sons of God.” This
conflict coaching training will equip attendees
to help themselves, as well as others, to resolve
conflict biblically. It differs from the January
workshop in that it is a more comprehensive
and extensive training with hands on role
playing; which is the first step to becoming a
Certified Christian Conciliator.
The team has had another opportunity this
year to work with a client to help them resolve
a conflict after sharing with them God’s biblical
peacemaking plan from the Gospel.

Stephen Ministry continues to be blessed to be able to
host Coffee Hour once every other month as an awareness
activity. Personal contact and interest in Stephen Ministry
activities are met with a ministry table during the coffee
hour.
Some Stephen Ministers have completed assignments
and others are now caring for eight individuals in our
community. There are other Stephen Ministers who serve
families and loved ones in an unofficial but extremely
supportive role.
Stephen Ministry also supplies a series of four books
called Journeying Through Grief which can be obtained
via the church office. These are available to anyone even
without a Stephen Ministry relationship.
People with knowledge of needs which the Stephen
Ministers can serve can contact the church office.
