Rld = Zld X Cos (Φ)

= 173.58 X 0.866
= 150.32 Ω

It is important to adjust the setting of load encroachment resistance RLd in Phase selection with load
encroachment to the value equal to or less than the calculated value of RLdInFw in power swing.

X1PHS ≥ 1.44 · X1Zone-2 = 1.44 · 10.41 = 14.99 Ω

X0PHS ≥ 1.44 · X0Zone-2 = 1.44 · 32.7 = 47.08 Ω

Power swing detection

X1lnFw is adopted higher than the maximum reactive reach in the forward direction i.e. Phase selection reactive
reach in the forward direction. Hence, the value of X1lnFw is adopted as
X1lnFw = 1.1 x X1(zone-3) Ω
= 1.1 x 44.71 Ω
= 49.18 Ω
Same value is adopted for X1lnRv
R1Lln is the line resistance and in this case has a value of X1lnFw / tan (71.3) = 16.64 Ω
R1FlnFw is the fault resistive reach in forward direction. The value adopted is
R1FlnFw = 1.1 x RFPP (zone-3) Ω
= 1.1 x 210.45 Ω
= 231.495 Ω
Same value is adopted for R1FInRv
RLdOutFw is derived from the following calculation

ZLdOutFw = Umin / (√3 x ILoad)

= 112.2kV / (√3 x 1.2 x 311)
= 173.58 Ω
RLdOutFw = ZLdOutFw X Cos (Φ)
= 173.58 X 0.866
= 150.32 Ω
Same value is adopted for RLdOutRv.

Setting of fault resistive cover

Based on the load encroachment criteria, Phase-Phase and Phase-Earth fault resistances are calculated as shown
below.

REL670 RFPP (loop resistance) RFPE

Zone-1 6 * Zone-1 X1 value = 33.98Ω 4.5 * Zone-1 X1 value = 25.48Ω
Zone-2 90% Zone-3 value = 189.4Ω 90% Zone-3 value = 94.7Ω

2. DIRECTIONAL EARTHFAULT PROTECTION (67N)

The directional earthfault setting is 20% of IBase value. The reset is instantaneous.
IBase = 400A
Pickup set = 20%
Operating value in primary = 80A
TMS = 0.50 shall be used.

3. BROKEN CONDUCTOR CHECK

This function is set based on the unsymmetry current which is relation between the difference of the minimum and
maximum phase current to the maximum phase current. Typical setting is 50%. Note that it must be set to avoid
problem with unsymmetry under minimum operating conditions. Set the time delay of 5 sec.

The current unsymmetry signal output START is set on if:

• The difference in currents between the phase with the lowest current and the phase with the highest current is
greater than set percentage Iub> of the highest phase current
• The highest phase current is greater than the minimum setting value IP>.
• The lowest phase current is below 50% of the minimum setting value IP>
The third condition is included to avoid problems in systems involving parallel lines. If a conductor breaks in one phase
on one line, the parallel line will experience an increase in current in the same phase. This might result in the first two
conditions being satisfied. If the unsymmetrical detection lasts for a period
longer than the set time tOper the TRIP output is activated. The trip output shall be used only for alarming purpose
and not tripping.

4. OVERVOLTAGE PROTECTION (59)

Parameter Setting
U1 > 110% is set for trip after 5 sec.
U2 > 140% is set for trip with 0.1 sec.

NOTE: Over Voltage protection settings can be modified as per customer practice. Both stages should be configured
for trip.

5. FUSE FAILURE PROTECTION

Zero sequence
The fuse failure supervision (SDDRFUF) function can be set in five different modes by setting the parameter OpMode.
The zero sequence function continuously measures the internal currents and voltages in all three phases and
calculates:
• the zero-sequence voltage 3U0
• the zero-sequence current 3I0.
The measured signals are compared with their respective set values 3U0< and 3I0>. The function enable the internal
signal fuseFailDetected if the measured zero sequence voltage is higher than the set value 3U0>, the measured zero
sequence current is below the set value 3I0< and the operation mode selector (OpMode is set to 2 (zero sequence
mode). This will activate the output signal BLKU, intended to block voltage related protection functions in the IED.
Negative sequence
The negative sequence operates in the same way as the zero sequence, but it calculates the negative sequence
component of current and voltage.
• the negative sequence current 3I2
• the negative sequence voltage 3U2
The function enable the internal signal fuseFailDetected if the measured negative sequence voltage is higher than the
set value 3U2>, the measured negative sequence current is below the value 3I2< and the operation mode selector
(OpMode) is set to 1 (negative sequence mode).

6. SYNCHROCHECK AND ENERGIZING CHECK (RSYN, 25)

The function block includes synchronism, synchro check function and the energizing function (to allow closing when one
side of the breaker is dead).

Synchrocheck

The main purpose of the synchrocheck function is to provide control over the closing of circuit breakers in power
networks in order to prevent closing if conditions for synchronism are not detected. The synchrocheck function
measures the conditions across the circuit breaker and compares them to set limits. Output is only generated when all
measured conditions are within their set limits simultaneously.

The check consists of:

• Live line and live bus.
• Voltage level difference.
• Frequency difference (slip). The bus and line frequency must also be within a range of ±5 Hz from rated frequency.
• Phase angle difference.

A time delay is available to ensure that the conditions are fulfilled for a minimum period of time.

132kV PAONTA-GIRINAGAR LINE BAY RELAY SETTING CALCULATION

Principle for the synchrocheck function

Energizing check

The main purpose of the energizing check function is to facilitate the controlled reconnection of disconnected lines and
buses to energized lines and buses. The energizing check function measures the bus and line voltages and compares
them to both high and low threshold values. The output is only given when the actual measured conditions match the
set conditions. The energizing operation can operate in the dead line live bus (DLLB) direction, dead bus live line (DBLL)
direction or in both directions over the circuit breaker. Energizing from different directions can be different for
automatic reclosing and manual closing of the circuit breaker. For manual closing it is also possible to allow closing when
both sides of the breaker are dead, Dead Bus Dead Line (DBDL).
The equipment is considered energized if the voltage is above a set value, e.g. 80% of the base voltage, and non-
energized if it is below a set value, e.g. 30% of the base voltage. A disconnected line can have a considerable potential
because of factors such as induction from a line running in parallel, or feeding via extinguishing capacitors in the circuit
breakers. This voltage can be as high as 50% or more of the base voltage of the line. When the energizing direction
corresponds to the settings, the situation has to remain constant for a certain period of time before the close signal is
permitted. The purpose of the delayed operate time is to ensure that the dead side remains de-energized and that the
condition is not due to temporary interference.
