ECOS DEL MAR 2018 – Call for Scores

The Global Culture and Arts Council, a division of GEM Cultural Productions, announces a call for
score submissions, open to composers from Latin America and the Caribbean region, of original
choral scores or choral arrangements for the recording of the first “Ecos del Mar” (Echoes of the
Sea). This artistic production will allow U.S. vocal groups and performers to access a new
repertoire of high quality and merit. This production will be curated by relevant personalities who
engage in the preservation, development and dissemination of the musical heritage within the
United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Context
Considering that art is an instrument for social transformation, we are inviting creators and artists to
extend their range of cultural undertaking through their participation in the competition. This call for
scores, which is an instrument for collective reflection, is one of the diverse actions taken by the
Global Culture and Arts Council to broaden the perception of music from Latin America and the
Caribbean region within the music industry.

Criteria
Scores: Original scores and arrangements or versions prior to 1919 (or works in the public
domain).

Composers: There are no age or nationality restrictions.

Theme: Free choice. Curators will reject any works that openly express a political stance or group-
specific discriminatory content.

Duration: 3-6 minutes, to be determined by the composer and text.

Vocal parts: 4-8 vocal parts. SATB, SSAATTB, SSSAAA, SSAA or any combination thereof, to be
determined by the composer and text.

Instrumentation: Works must be written a cappella and the composer will be free to use any
percussion instruments or any indigenous instruments of the cultures settled in the Latin American
and Caribbean region. While it is not compulsory, the jury would appreciate the submission of a
piano reduction for each musical work participating in the call for scores.

Language: Spanish, Creole or any indigenous language (living or extinct) of the cultures settled in
the Latin American and Caribbean region.

Text: Open to composer’s choice.

Degree of difficulty: For professional performers and college students.

Admission Form: Composers must read page three of this call for scores very carefully, sign it and
send a scan thereof via email.

The recording and production of the album will be directed by multiple Latin Grammy award winner
Julio Bagué, who has also worked with a myriad top artists including Luis Miguel, Tito Puentes,
Néstor Torres, Jon Secada and Chayanne. The works will be staged and rehearsed by the
members of the Ecos del Mar vocal group, to be called and selected by Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Ríos.
The works will be premiered at different venues, including by special invitation at Baylor University,
in Dallas, Texas, among other concert series. In addition, the curators reserve the right to be able
to recommend that scores be printed and disseminated within the United States, or to include
certain works in recordings subsequent to the call for scores, if they so choose.

Submission Deadline: January, 31 2019
Announcement of results: February 2019
Staging/Rehearsal: February 2019
Recording: March 2019
Premiere and Award Presentation: May 2019

gladly lend their support in managing viable alternatives.

published, I agree to enter into an agreement to be executed independently of the process of this
call for scores.
