Highlanders Boxing Club promotes healthy living, recycling

Highlanders Boxing Club
continued its initiative to pro-
mote recycling and healthy liv-
ing in Highland with its inaugu-
ral Healthy Living Fair on Sat-
urday, Sept. 15.
The fair brought over a dozen
organizations to the youth box-
ing club to demonstrate healthy
eating suggestions, give cancer
screenings, teach hands-free
CPR, collect recycling and
more.
Elected officials, local serv-
ice clubs and community lead-
ers came out to support the ef-
fort and the youth advocacy of
Highlanders Boxing Club
founder Tony Cifuentes, includ-
ing county Supervisor James
Ramos who has known Ci-
fuentes since he was 16.
“When I first met Tony he
and his brother were bringing
youth into the boxing club to
uplift them,” Ramos said. “It’s a
passion for Tony to help kids in

everything in their lives. I’ve
seen young boxers grow up to
become great people in the
community. If this program
was not here to have a positive
impact in their lives, who
knows where they would be?
“Having the boxing club here
gives the kids in the area some-
where to go for positive experi-
ences,” he continued. “It’s one
thing to say we support you and
another to be on the ground
standing with you in support.”
A major participant in the
fair was the San Bernardino
branch of the California Conser-
vation Corp, there to collect re-
cyclables and educate people on
the importance of recycling and
how the program uses recy-
cling to create employment op-
portunities for troubled teens
and young adults regardless of
criminal records.
“Job creation in this area is
important to all of us in this
community,” Sandy Bonilla, di-
rector of the San Bernardino
California Conservation Corps
and Cifuentes’ sister.
During the fair Ramos pre-
sented Bonilla a resolution of
support from the county Board
of Supervisors.
Recognition from the Board
of Supervisors recently became
a requirement for conservation
corps groups to receive certifi-
