Basics in Biological Rhythm Research

This part addresses fundamentals in circadian

rhythm research:
Entrainment, Phase-shift, Phase-response Curve, Aschoff's Rules, Masking Effects. The
Cellular Basis of Circadian Clocks, Genetic Basis of the Circadian Clock as well as Data
Analysis Techniques

Lectures by: Prof. L.Edmunds (SUNY New York), Dr. S.Gorbey (Uni Heidelberg), Prof.
B.Lemmer (Uni Heidelberg), Prof. S.Michel (Uni Leiden), Prof. J.Waterhouse (Uni
Liverpool)

Biological Rhythms in Different Species

The second introduction part is about:

Morphology and Histology of Biological Clocks. Rhythms in Arthropodes and Plants.
Circadian Oscillators and the Cell Cycle. Rhythms in Signaltransduction and talks about
Shift-work and Jet-Lag.

Lectures by: Prof. G.Atkinson (Uni Liverpool), Prof. L.Edmunds (SUNY New York),

Heidelberg), Prof. A.Reinberg (CNRS, Paris), Prof. E.Wagner (Uni Freiburg).

Chronomedicine and Chronopharmacology

The main part

of the lectures are related to the growing field of circadian rhythms in diseases and
Chronopharmacology:
Chronobiology and Chronopharmacology of the Endocrine and Cardiovascular System.
Rhythms in Secretion and Motility of the GI-Tract, Pancreas and Gall Bladder. Sleep
Apnea. Pain. Chronoepidemiology, Chronopharmacokinetics and Drug Delivery.
Treatment of Hypertension, angina pectoris and Asthma. Chronopharmacology and
Chronotoxicology of Anticancer Drugs, as well as Rhythms in Psychiatric Diseases and
Light Therapy.

Practical Approaches

There will be also a part of "real live

experiments":
Self-assessment of 24-hr heart rate and blood pressure rhythms (ABPM). Self-assessment
of 24-hr activity, temperature, peak flow or grip strength, as well as a demonstration of
our telemetric facility for rat and mice and a visit of a Sleep Lab.

Demonstrations by: Dr. S.Gorbey (Uni Heidelberg), Dr. C.Grundt (Uni

Heidelberg), J.Schmitt (Theresienkrankenhaus Mannheim), Dr. J.Scholtze
(Theresienkrankenhaus Mannheim).
