DIEGO H. PATIGAYON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Mukas, Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte

School Diego H. Patigayon National High School Grade Level Grade 11

Teacher CHRISTINE D. BARA Learning Area PHYSICAL SCIENCE
Date and Time 11-23-18 (12:46 – 1:45/ 1:46 – 2:45) Quarter III
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
1. How the concept of the atom evolved from Ancient Greek to the present
2. How the concept of the element evolved from Ancient Greek to the present
B. Performance Standards The learners shall be able to make a creative representation of the historical
development of the atom or the chemical element in a timeline.
C. Learning Competencies/ The learners to:
Objectives 1. Point out the main ideas in the discovery of the structure of the atom and its
subatomic particles (S11/12PS-IIIb-8)
2. Cite the contribution of John Dalton toward the understanding of the concept of
the chemical elements (S11/12PS-IIIc-13)
3. Explain how Dalton’s theory contributed to the discovery of other elements
(S11/12PS-IIIc-14)
Specific Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, the learners shall be able to:
1. Discuss key developments in the concept of the atom and element from Robert
Boyle to John Dalton.
2. Discuss the aspects of the Chemical Atomic Theory, and relate its evidence (3
Fundamental Laws) to these aspects.
3. Gain an appreciation of the scientists involved in the development of the science
of Chemistry.
II. CONTENT Corpuscles to Chemical Atomic Theory (The Development of Atomic Theory)
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide Pages Teaching Guide for Senior High School: PHYSICAL SCIENCE CORE SUBJECT pg: 48-57
2. Learner’s Materials pages
3. Text book pages
4. Additional Materials
from Learning Resources

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Before the Lesson
1. Elicit Robert Boyle
2. Engage (How I will grab the students’ attention)
Use the suggested Give One, Get One, Move On Activity
B. Lesson Proper
1. Explore (The students explore a topic without any core vocabulary or formal lesson so far)
1. Show the relevance of the topic and its objective
2. Introduce the following list of important terms that learners will encounter:
a. Robert Boyle f. Chemical Atomic Theory
b. corpuscle g. 3 Fundamental Laws
c. Antoine Lavoisier h. Joseph Gay-Lussac
d. chemical element i. Amedeo Avogadro
e. John Dalton j. Dmitri Mendeleev
2. Explain (Introduction of key vocabulary and core topics)
Discussion on Antoine Lavoisier, John Dalton, Chemical Atomic Theory and its
evidence/implications
Mention that Boyle’s empirical mindset slowly gained ground.
Explain that this concept of the element allowed for another great chemist, John
Dalton (1766-1844), to further develop the concept of the atom.
Explain further that Dalton proposed his atomic theory as the best explanation to
three important observations made at the time.
Highlight the developments in the way we think about both atoms and elements as
a result of Dalton’s Chemical Atomic Theory.
Cite other scientists who made headway in the concept of the element thanks to
Dalton’s theory.
C. After the Lesson
1. Elaborate (Build off of explanation)
Place/draw a blank timeline on the board. Have learners come up to the board and
attach metacards with concepts or names of people or groups. They should add
dates and time periods. Dates need not be exact points on the line. Learners can
modify the timeline by adding brackets (e.g. for alchemy spanning several hundred
years). They can link metacards, use arrows or lines to denote periods, etc. They
should accomplish the timeline within 20 minutes, the more detailed the better.
2. Evaluate

3. Extend Essay writing about Boyle, Lavoisier or Dalton
