Separation Systems
Saab Ericsson Space is the world
market leader in separation systems,

supplying equipment for all major
commercial launchers.

The Separation System keeps the

satellite attached to the launcher’s
adapter and supports the payload
during launch. It then releases the
satellite upon command and ejects
the satellite from the launcher.
The Separation System is either of
clamp band type or of bolted type.
The clamp band consists of a band
with either one or two connecting
points. Band tention provides
pressure on the clamp that attaches
the satellite to the launcher. Release
is normally effected by pyrotechnical
bolt cutters or pin pullers but also non
pyrotechnical opening mechanisms
exist. The retention set secures a safe
release behviour and parks the clamp
band on the adapter after satellite
release.
The separation spring set ejects the
satellite from the launcher, inducing a
specific velocity and spin rate
determined by the number of
separation springs and specified
spring energy.
The bolted type separation system
consists of four pyrotechnically
operated separation nuts.
Soft separation systems, featuring
extreme load capability in
combination with a shock response
are available as existing, qualified
products. Low shock is obtained by
using a specially developed Clamp
Band Opening Device (CBOD)

Saab Ericsson Space’s experience in separation systems dates back to 1970.

Today the company offers a wide variety of systems for space applications, used
in the Ariane, Atlas, Proton, Delta, Sea Launch, Soyuz and other programs. More
than 300 in-orbit separations have been carried out, all with 100% success. Saab
Ericsson Space separation systems ensure high reliability and optimum performance
at low cost.

Saab Ericsson Space develops and manufactures space equipment for launchers and satellites.
The main products are on-board computers, data handling systems, antenna systems, microwave
electronics and guidance and separation systems. The company employs a total of 640 people
and has offices in Göteborg (headquarters) and Linköping, Sweden and subsidiaries in Vienna,
Austria, and Los Angeles, USA.
