What is a warm up?

 Your warm-up should vary depending on the type of activity you are preparing for.
 Purpose of a warm-up
o The warm-up should gently prepare the body for exercises by gradually increasing the
heart rate and circulation; this will loosen the joints and increase blood flow to the
muscles. Stretching the muscles prepares them for physical activity and prevents injury.
 What can happen if you don’t warm up properly before activity?
o Increased chance for injury, muscle pulls
o Decreased athletic performance
o Reduced muscle efficiency and reaction time
o Greater muscle soreness
 The high temperatures and increased blood flow resulting from warm-up are
important for delivery of oxygen to the muscles and for prevention of build-up
of unwanted waste products (lactic acid) which can lead to muscle soreness.

You do not need to perform a warm up prior to a workout of low to moderate intensity (walk or slow
jog) A 5-10 minute warm up is recommended prior to a vigorous workout or competition. It should
result in an increase in heart rate and a light sweat.

The Cool-down: After a work out

In Class Activity:

Break into groups of 3-4 people. Plan a warm-up that would be appropriate for general activity.
Remember- this warm up should take a person 5-10 minutes to complete.
