BIMETALLIC THEROMETER
(SOLID EXPANSION THEROMETER)
BIMETALLIC THEROMETER
(SOLID EXPANSION THEROMETER)

PRINCIPLE:
Solid metal change their length with temperature and co-efficient of thermal
expansion.
l = LT
Where L= length
l = change in length
 = Co-efficient of thermal expansion
T = Temperature difference.

CONSTRUCTION
a) Bimetallic Strip :
In consists of two straight different Metal strips welded together. One end is fixed while
other and free to deflect.
b) Spiral bimetallic strip :
In consists of spiral bimetallic strip. One end is fixed to case while other
connected to pointer, which moves on scale or dial.
c) Helix bimetallic strip :
It consists of helix bimetallic strip of all turn of same diameter. One end fixed to
case while other connected to shaft. Shaft is connected to pointer.
Metal thermal well is used for protection against corrosion and protection against
breakage.
WORKING OF BIMETALLIC THERMONETER
The metal is having high co-efficient of expansion expand more in length than
other does as temperature at the fixed end increases does.
a) In straight-line bimetallic strip, strip deflects towards low expansion metal.
b) In spiral bimetallic strip, the coil gets wound.
c) In helix strip the coil moves axially.
Thus free end movement deflects pointer of calibrated scale.

CALIBRATION:
1) Bimetallic thermometer and standard thermometer are immersed in flask.
2) Both temperatures are changed and with respect to standard thermometer
reading, temperature marked on bimetallic thermometer dial is observed.
3) Thus, scale is prepared for different temperatures.

WORKING SUBSTANCE
a) Low expansion metal: Inver ( 64% Fe. + 36% Ni)
b) High expansion metal: Brass, Nickel.

CHARACTERSTICS:
a) Accuracy:  1% of span.
b) Good reproducibility.

ADVANTAGES:
1) Cheap as compared to R.T.D.
2) Easy construction and no breakage.
3) Easy installation and maintenance.
DISADVANTAGES:
1) Mounted at point of temperature measurement.
2) High accuracy can not be obtained.
3) Costly than liquid expansion thermometer.

APPLICATION:
Used in high flow rate liquid or gas by directly connecting fixed end.

PROCEDURE
1) Insert bimetallic thermometer and std. Digital thermometer in flask.
2) Start heating and note down temperature indicated by bimetallic thermometer
and standard thermometer.
3) For temperature 40c, 50 c … 90c.
Note down the bimetallic thermometer reading.
4) Plot a graph of bimetallic thermometer reading Vs thermometer reading.

CONCLUSION:
Thus, we have calibrated the given bimetallic thermometer.
