LEARN TO PRAY
Gloria and I have been thinking a lot about answered prayers late-
ly. I fear too often we pray and then never seek or knock to complete our
request. How often does God answer your prayer and you never stop to
notice it was God who sent the answer?

We are in our 13th year of publishing the Tid Bits of Wisdom.

When we began, we would get it ready for mailing and then we would
pray over it before going to the post office. We did every year until last
year. For some reason we quit praying before we went to the post office.
This last year has been a challenge for getting the mail delivered. The Oc-
tober and November papers were not delivered until the end of November.
We were beside ourselves. Our post office is not the most efficient post of-
fice, but we can’t go anywhere else because of our permit. Our postmaster
was a sweet lady but didn’t know what to do. They had no one trained to
post permit mail. I would have to tell them how to do it almost every time
I went. They don’t send a bill when the permit is due, and you just have to
guess when and how much you owe. If they put out new forms to fill out
sometimes it is three months before they get us the right ones. We called
the main post office and told them the troubles we were having. They said

MONTHLY REPORT
Well, our year is still new and fresh. God is giving us another chance to
proclaim His glory. If only the world could know how much God loves
them and desires the best for them, this would be a different world. Many
of God’s born-again believers do not understand how loved they are in
God’s sight.
We have had some sweet gifts at the end of the year and some have
increased their monthly giving. We had a couple of new, givers and this
was very encouraging to us. When a work is new everyone responds, but
as time goes on we get accustomed to things and forget. We are encour-
aged every time someone shares their life with us or this work. God bless
you for sharing!
We received a package from Bro. Milton Martin which included
a lot of his Bible writings and teachings. We haven’t had time yet to re-
ally look it over but will soon. If you know Bro. Milton and his work,
you might want to contact him and share in his work. His address is 2590
Curry Loop, Belton, Texas 76513-7736. We have many of God’s servants
on our mailing list and we are thankful for the works they are accomplish-
ing for Christ.
We have many on our mailing that need prayer for their physical
conditions; Mrs. Pearl Larson, Mrs. Bobbie Mayhew, Bro. Bob Wallace,
Bro. Carl Matthews, and many that we don’t have names for. Gloria had a
stroke Thanksgiving Day but God was merciful and she has no damage or
paralyses from it. She is fighting high blood pressure and lack of strength
but overall God has shown great mercy to her. I have had three very good
weeks and we are thankful for what God is doing for us.
This paper is a week late because Gloria lost her work when the
computer froze up and she had to start all over. Pray for our equipment.
We do not take a salary from Tid Bits of Wisdom. Anything you send with Tid
Bits of Wisdom’s name goes straight to Tid Bits of Wisdom. The paper was 12 years
old this December and many who started with us have died or become unable to give.
Many have been faithful all these years. Pray and ask God if He wants you to join us
with a monthly support. We are grateful for our faithful supporters.

but we felt it was what the Lord would have us do. We took the money and bought
a retirement home (which is a very interesting story to tell at another time). We
had to finance $75,000. We got a 15-year note and asked God to give us a way
to pay it off, so we could live debt-free. Why debt-free? Because when you owe
no man anything you are available to God for whatever He needs you to do. We
wanted to give God all of us! When I retired, we still owed $20,000, at $950 a
month. We did not have the resources for this we wondered what would we do
now? Do we get a reverse mortgage, take out a new loan so we would have some
money (even though it still left us with payments). We had committed not to have
debt and everything available was an increase in debt. How was God going to
take care of us now?
For four and a half years God has, in many ways, provided our house
payment each month and we have never been late. The pressure of living above
your resources is very hard on a woman (me too, but it was worse for her). It was
getting her down and she needed relief. You know when you are at the end of a
testing because you can feel it is the end of your strength.
We had come very close to paying off the house, but we were weary. We
owed less than $10,000. Three Sunday’s ago, the Galilean Baptist Church gave
us the money to pay off the house. This was totally unexpected. They had been
giving us a monthly pay the last two years and they needed to hire an associate
for our pastor so they needed our monthly money. By paying off our house (the
same as two years pay for the church) they could have our monthly pay to hire
an associate and we could be free from monthly support. There are not words
that can express mine and Gloria’s gratitude toward the people at Galilean Bap-
tist Church. Their love gift has brought about a completion of the work God
started almost 45 years ago. We started a journey with the Lord in 1971 and
have prayed and trusted our way to here today. The journey has been over land,
through the sea and the wilderness into the promised land. We have seen miracle
after miracle all these years. How bland our life would have been without faith
to walk His way. I wouldn’t ask to go back through these years for anything, yet
I wouldn’t trade what we have witnessed either. Is it easy to follow Christ? No.
It is rewarding. The world has nothing to offer that would even compare to it.
I have said all this to encourage you to learn how to pray. We have not
because we ask not, and I would add, we also wait not for God’s answers! I am
putting verses about prayer on page 10. Read and learn what the Scriptures tell
us about praying. If you will do what the Scriptures say to do, God will do what
He has promised to do. PLEASE take time to study these verses. It will change
your life.

OTHERS MAY...YOU MAY NOT

If God has called you to be really like Jesus, He will draw you into a life of
crucifixion and humility and put upon you such demands of obedience, that you
will not be able to follow other people or measure yourself by other Christians.
In many ways He will seem to let other people do things which He will not let
you do.
Other Christians and ministers who seem very religious and useful, may push
themselves, pull wires, and work schemes to carry out their plans, but you cannot
do it, and if you attempt it, you will meet with such failure and rebuke from the
Lord as to make you sorely penitent.
Others may boast of themselves, of their work, of their successes, of their writ-
ings, but the Holy Spirit will not allow you to do any such thing, and if you begin
it, He will lead you into some deep mortification that will make you despise
yourself and all your good works.
Others may be allowed to succeed in making money, or may have a legacy left to
them, but it is likely God will keep you poor, because he wants you to have some-
thing far better than gold, namely, a helpless dependence upon Him, that He may
have the privilege of supplying your needs day by day out of an unseen treasury.
The Lord may let others be honored and put forward and keep you hidden in ob-
scurity, because He wants to produce some choice fragrant fruit for His coming
glory, which can only be produced in the shade. He may let others be great but
keep you small. He may let others do a work for him and get the credit for it, but
He will make you work and toil on without knowing how much you are doing;
and then to make your work still more precious He may let others get credit for
the work you have done, and thus make your reward ten times greater when Jesus
comes.
The Holy Spirit will put a strict watch over you, with a jealous love, and will
rebuke you for little words and feelings or wasting your time, which other Chris-
tians never feel distressed over. So, make up your mind that God is an infinite
sovereign, and has a right to do as He pleases with His own. He may not explain
to you a thousand things which puzzle your reason in his dealings with you, but if
you absolutely sell yourself to be His love slave, He will wrap you up in a jealous
love, and bestow upon you many blessings which come only to those who are in
the inner circle.

didn’t want to love each other. It’s one thing to be loving when you want to and
another thing to love when you don’t want to! Some days you are just angry at
each other. What do you do then? You do what God said to do. You love your
neighbor as yourself. How would you want to be treated if you were the other
person? But the truth is our flesh does not want to love when we are upset. You
will not do what is right, when angry, unless you love God more than yourself!
We do what we do because God said so!!! Can God trust you to do that? Per-
fected love is a love that is constant in all situations. There came a time in our
marriage when divorce seemed to be our answer but in order to do that we had to
break our word to God. We vowed untill death. It was our love and our fear of
God that gave us the courage to keep our word and trust God to fix our marriage.
We did and God did! This year we celebrate 59 years of marriage and we love
each other with our whole hearts.
LOVE NEVER FAILS. (Charity I Cor. 13:8) We may fail to love, but
love given never fails to do what it is sent to do. The other person may choose to
reject our love, but love does the job it is sent to do.
LOVE FULFILLS THE LAW. (Romans 13:10) As long as we are lov-
ing we are not breaking God’s laws. You may not even know all His laws, but if
you learn to give love you will never be breaking His laws.
LOVE COVERS A MULTITUDE OF SINS. (Prov. 10:12) Hatred stirs
up strife, but love takes the power out of sin. It’s hard to be ugly to a loving per-
son. Most of us respond to anger with anger instead of love. Remember when
Jesus was in the garden and Judas betrayed Him? Judas kissed him and Jesus
said, “FRIEND, what doest thou?” Why did Jesus call him friend? He knew
who Judas was, but it didn’t change who Jesus was. Do people have the power
to change your life? Then, they are ruler of you and not God.
Loving is to be godly in all your actions, words and deeds. There was
a time when I committed to the Lord that I would do my best to always respond
with love to all people that He brought into my life. Some people I enjoy loving
and others I love because God said so and I know that is best for my life. If I
meet you, I will love you. You are God’s creation and God loves His creation,
therefore so will I.

The following was a posting by Thailand missionary Kristy Guay.
I read this and thought of my eight wonderful MK children who have
helped Richard and me so much in our ministry. Five of them spent over two
years without a home as we traveled all over on deputation. One got to move to a
new country when he was three months old. The older kids had so much to adjust
to and a new language to learn, and then the younger children had so much to ad-
just to when we went back to America. The ones who have gone to America for
college had to leave behind their family and adjust to so much alone not knowing
when they would be able to come back to visit. They all have worked so hard
over the years to help us minister to the people here. Now only one is at home
with us. They are spread out in so many places, and we can never all be again
together until heaven, but just the thought of my children brings me so much joy.
I love you all so much, Matthew, Marah, Joshua, Elisabeth, Elijah, Josiah,
Micah, and Sarah. Thank you for all your sacrifices. I’m proud of you!

What is Furlough?

It’s a long plane trip back to the place you half-call home.
It’s all of your life condensed into two suitcases apiece.
It’s all of your family and friends ogling at you and saying,
“Oh, look how you’ve grown.”
It’s jet lag and reverse culture shock and spending $300 on groceries
because the aisles are limitless as they abound in cereal and candy and all other
wonderful treats.
It’s long car rides to a different church every Sunday and asking, “Do we have
time for one more Patch the Pirate?”
It’s finding license plates for all the states as you crisscross the land.
It’s praying to God that your parents remember American driving laws.
It’s the new animals along the side of the road. Because even squirrels are a bit
exotic.

It’s going to a different church and making new friends that you may never see
again this side of heaven (unless it’s that lady who changed your diaper when
you were two!) Making and breaking friendships in a day.
It’s watching the presentation for the twentieth time and whispering the script
under your breath.
It’s hearing the same sermons multiple times until you could preach them your-
self if your dad ever got sick.
It’s spending the night under a strange roof. Maybe it’s a hotel room where you
play with your siblings with the few toys you brought and drift to sleep with the
lights still on and the whisper of your parents.
Or maybe it’s a stranger’s house where you’ve eaten too much and talked far
past your bedtime and listening to the strange creaks of a strange house full of
strangers who have become friends.
It’s growing attached to the foreign homeland where you’re a stranger who
blends in with the crowd.
It’s missing your home in the foreign land where you’re a stranger who sticks
out in a crowd.
It’s learning you have one home or two homes or no home.
It’s sharing experiences with those who marvel at what to you is ordinary,
while you marvel at their ordinary lives and wonder what that stability and
monotony must feel like.
It’s wondering if anyone here feels like you do until you’re at that mission’s
conference and you meet another MK from halfway across the world.
And even though your cultures differ, suddenly you’ve found a heart that under-
stands your joy and your pain. Because just like you, they’re home yet they’re
not.
It’s getting on that plane and saying good-bye to what you gained and going
back to everything you left behind.
It’s straddling two worlds no matter where you go, because your heart is split
between them both.
It’s the beauty and the ugly all rolled into one.
That is what furlough is!
A liberal church says you are welcome here and you do not have
to clean up your life.
A legalistic church says you are not welcome here until you clean
up your life.
Jesus says you are welcome here and I will change your life from
the inside out. John 8:11
