LEARNING TARGETS

1. Describe chemical properties of matter.

2. Describe clues that indicate that a chemical change is

taking place.

3. Distinguish chemical changes from physical changes.

OBSERVING CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
• Chemical property: ability to produce a change in the
composition of matter.

• Observed only when the substances in a sample of

matter are changing into different substances.
EXAMPLES OF CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
• Flammability: the ability of a material to burn in the
presence of oxygen.

• Reactivity: how readily a substance combines

chemically with another

• Rust forms when oxygen react with iron and water

RECOGNIZING CHEMICAL CHANGES
• Chemical Change: occurs
when a substance reacts &
forms one or more new
substances

Hint: Compare the materials

before and after the reaction.
EVIDENCE OF A CHEMICAL CHANGE
• COLOR:
• When a match is struck and ignites, does the match
stay the same color?

• PRECIPITATE:
• Solid that will separate from a liquid mixture.

• PRODUCTION of GAS:
• Baking soda and vinegar before/after mixture.
DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN CHANGE
• Ask yourself: Are different substances present
after the change takes place?

• Rules:
• When matter undergoes a chemical change,
the composition of matter changes.

• When matter undergoes a physical change,

the composition of the matter remains the
same.
