5th Form Bearings

1. A point Q is located 12 km due South of a point P. A point R is located 8 km from P on a Bearing

of 3200 from P.
a) Sketch a diagram to illustrate this information.
b) Calculate, to the nearest kilometre, the distance QR.

2. A point Y is located 9 km away from a point X on a bearing of 1120 from X. A point Z is on a

bearing of 2020 from X. The distance YZ is 12 km. Calculate, to 3 significant figures, the distance
XZ.

3. P, Q and R are three points on level ground. Q is 12 km due west of P, and R is 9 km due south
of P.

a) Sketch a diagram which shows the relative positions of P, Q and R and the northward
direction, as well as the given distances
b) Calculate, to 3 significant figures the bearing of Q from R

Three towns, P, Q and R are such that the bearing of P from Q is 0700. R is 10 km due east of Q
and PQ = 5 km.

i) Calculate, correct to one decimal place, the distance PR.

ii) Given that angle QPR = 1420 , state the bearing of R from P.

Draw a diagram to represent the information given below. Show clearly the northline in your
diagram

a) Town F is 50 km east of town G

b) Town H is on a bearing of 0400 from town F.
c) The distance from F to H is 64 km
d) Calculate, to the nearest km, the actual distance GH
e) Calculate, to the nearest degree, the bearing of H from G

A cross – country race covers a course which takes the shape of a triangle, KLM. Runners are too start at
K and run 4 km due north to a point, L. from L, they are to run 5 km on a bearing of 3000 to a point, M
and then run directly back to K.

a) Draw a diagram to represent the triangular course carefully labeling:

i) the points K, L and M

ii) the distances 4 km and 5 km
iii) the north direction
iv) the bearing 3000

b) Calculate:
i) the distance KM in km
ii) the bearing of M from K
