 The term “Climate Change” proposed by World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in 1966 was incorporated in the
title of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC) which now has become synonymous with anthropogenic global warming. Climate change is
one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century along with the increased global population and environmental
degradation. It is no longer a scientific concern alone but involves economics, sociology, law and health which directly
impact the global sustainability. The role of the Federal Government of India, Department of Industry and Mining,
Department of Climate Change & Department of Environment and Forest, Educational Institutions along with start-ups
and SME sector is of utmost importance in addressing the issues of Climate Change Impacts Management.Therefore, it is
an apt time to deliberate on Climate Change Impacts Management.

Objectives:
 To explore and to exchange state-of-the-art knowledge on climate change science, innovations, integrated
approaches, adaptation strategies, disaster risk reduction, planning and management and vulnerability and impact
assessment tools among regional stakeholders specifically in environment sectors.

 To gather scientific information, experiences and identify knowledge gaps on common, urgent and emergent issues
related Climate Change.

 To identify location-specific knowledge (GUJARAT) and adaptation strategies that may be upscaled to other
regions.

 To promote National and International partnerships and linkages among different sectors for collaborative
activities for Centre for Environment and Natural Resources being established under the aegis of Gujarat University-
Park for Industrial Extension and Research (GU-PIER).

 To provide a unique platform to eminent Professionals, Scientists, Researchers, Academicians, and Entrepreneurs
across the globe to participate, present their real time work and share their expertise, research advancements and
new technologies through oral and poster presentations, technical sessions, competition, debate and discussions.

 To create awareness among all about the importance of Management of Impacts due to Climate Change.

The Vibrant Gujarat

The Vibrant State of Gujarat with an area of 1,96,024 square kilometer is bound by Arabian Sea on the west and has
the longest coastline of 1,663 km. Being in the subtropical climate zone with wet southern districts and dry northern
districts, the state witnesses a range of 250C – 450C summer and 150C-350C winter temperatures and average rainfall of
300mm in Kutch -2100mm in Dang. This Vibrant State is susceptible to climate change and the impacts thereof need to
be urgently managed. The issue is being addressed by not only policy makers but academicians and corporate houses at
various levels. An urgent brain storming is envisaged through this conference to generate awareness and identify viable
strategies to mitigate the problems haunting our environment.

 In 2008, The Government of India released a National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) setting eight priority
missions-National Missions on Solar Energy, Enhanced Energy Efficiency, Sustainable Habitats, Water, Sustaining the
Himalayan Ecosystem, Greening India, Sustainable Agriculture and Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change-outlining a
national strategy that aims to promote development objectives while yielding co-benefits for addressing Climate Change
effectively and enhancing the ecological sustainability of India‘s development path. For the realization of these proposed
actions at the sub national level, in August 2009, the Hon‘ble Prime Minister of India urged each State Government to
create its own State level action plan consistent with strategies in the National Plan.

Gujarat is recognized for the pace of its economic growth. Although primarily an industrial economy, large sections of
population are dependent on climate sensitive sectors such as agriculture. Its long coastline supports large section of
poor vulnerable populations. These factors contribute to Gujarat‘s vulnerability to impacts of Climate Change. The
Government of Gujarat is committed to building a sustainable and climate resilient future for its people. Gujarat has
already demonstrated its leadership through a range of policies and that have the potential to counter some of the
challenges of Climate Change. The State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) has been prepared following a
consultative process and aims to ensuring success of these measures and realization of the ambitious and progressive
vision for development.

National Action Plan for Climate Change – NAPCC of Government of India identifies the need and provides adequate
solutions for minimizing damage to the environment. State Action Plan for Climate Change –SAPCC of Government of
Gujarat addresses the road map locally to achieve the National targets. Gujarat is the first and the only state in India to
form an independent Department for Climate Change. The first step towards achieving the objectives was to initiate
GEDA-Gujarat Energy Development Agency entrusted with everything pertaining the energy sector and providing
effective answers to why and how of all relevant problems.

Gujarat University
Gujarat University, established in 1949, is the oldest State University with a glorious past, illustrious Alumni, promising
future and dynamic leadership with a vision of excellence. Gujarat University’s campus is fully equipped with various
facilities to support every aspect of learning, sports, research, innovation and culture. Gujarat University is facilitated with
Sardar Patel Sports City having Olympic standard Sports facilities, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Extension Research and
Innovation (CERI), GU-PIER (Gujarat University-Park for Industrial Extension and research) for industry-academia
collaborative research, Gujarat University Startup and Entrepreneurship Council (GUSEC), Technology Business
Incubators (TBI) by DST and Atal Innovation Centre (AIC) by NitiAyog, New Delhi which emphasizes the University’s
commitment to academic excellence through innovations.Gujarat University is also the first University to initiate a
unique post graduate course on Climate Change Impacts Management. This multidisciplinary course addresses not
only basic study of the environment but also focuses on challenges faced due to climate change- the risks, the
vulnerability and resilience, the adaptation and the mitigation. The course now matured with PhDs awarded has
witnessed enthusiastic enrolment. The Scholars have collaborated with National and International agencies and
enriched their commitment towards combating Climate Change. Projects in collaboration with ISRO, MoEF, MoES and
Forest Department have further strengthened the academic

outputs in the form of good publications and Projects. The Department of Climate Change Impacts Management at
Gujarat University conducts Seminars, workshops and Interactive sessions regularly with the support of GEDA, GPCB,
GCPC, GEMI, VASMO, GERMI, PRL, ISRO and GUJCOST.

Continuing with the legacy of dissemination of knowledge and promoting young minds to prioritize and urgently
identify the issues pertinent to CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS MANAGEMENT, this Conference has been conceptualized.
It is proposed that the academic deliberations during the Conference would focus on the following themes:

A. Climate Change Impacts on Flora, Fauna, Environment and Humans:
Threatening of endangered species, Global Warming, Sea-Level Rise and Flooding Desertification, Impact on
Agriculture and Food Security, Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation Causing Skin Cancer

B. Sustainable Climate Impacts Management through Prevention, Adaptation &

Mitigation:
Cleaner Production & Clean Technologies, Pollution Prevention and Control, Waste Minimization, Reuse and
Recycling, Solid Waste Management & Co-Processing, Eco-Innovation, Industrial Symbiosis, Synergies and Waste
Exchange, Harnessing of Renewable Energy etc.

C. Climate Action through Adapting Sustainable Consumption and Production

Patterns :
Doing More and Better with Less, Need for Environmental Education and Behavioural Change, Life Cycle
Thinking, Sustainable use of Natural Resources: Water, Energy, Food, Oil, Natural Gas ,Reducing of Footprints on
