CONCEPT OF SPECIFIC FUEL CONSUMPTION

March 8, 2015

ENGINE KILOMETER (EKM) :-

EKM=FUEL CONSUMPTION ÷ KILOMETERS EARNED

SPECIFIC FUEL CONSUMPTION (SFC):–

SFC is a relative term is outcome of fundamental units. It denotes the quantity of fuel consumed for
transporting one unit of 1000 GTKM in case of passenger & goods services and per engine kilometers for
shunting and departmental services.

SFC= NET FUEL CONSUMPTION ÷ GTKM

Here, NET FUEL CONSUMPTION= (GROSS FUEL CONSUMPTION) — (FUEL CONSUMED IN IDLE HOURS)

GTKM= (LOCO WEIGHT+TRAIN LOAD)× KMS EARNED/1000

Thus, SFC is the amount of fuel consumed for carriage of 1000 Tons of load to one kilometers.

LUBE OIL SYSTEM

LUBE OIL SYSTEM Purpose of Lubricating oil system:- 1) Lube oil provides lubrication between two
moving parts or components to prevent wear and tear. 2) Cooling of piston and bearings. 3) Cleaning of
components. 4) Prevention of components from rusting.

LUBE OIL SYSTEM HAS FOLLOWING COMPONENTS:-

1) Lube oil sump:- RR 606 MG is used as lubricating oil in the sump. Capacity of sump is 910 lts.in case of
WDM2 and 1270 lts. in case of WDM3/WDG3. A measuring stick namely BAY NOT GAUGE is provided in
Loco left side/Engine right side to measure lube oil level of sump.

2) Lube oil pump:- Lube oil pump is a positive displacement pump, driven by Extension shaft gear. Its
delivery capacity is 1200 lts/minute at 8th notch.

3) Relief valve:- A relief valve has been provided just after the lube oil pump set at a pressure of 7.5
Kg/cm2. This pump has been provided to save the lube oil pump from overloading. A leak off pipe has
been provided to return the excessive lube oil to sump.
4) Lube oil filter:- There are 8 lube oil filters kept in a single drum located at Radiator compartment in BG
locomotives for filtration of Lube oil.

5) By Pass Valve:- This valve is set at a differential pressure of 1.4 Kg/cm2 in case of BG locomotives. This
valve normally operates at the time of starting when lube oil is essential to lubricate the different moving
parts, since it may be delayed to reach the lube oil in the system through lube oil filter.

6) Lube oil cooler: – Filtered lube oil is then sent to lube oil cooler to cool the lube oil. Cooling of lube oil
is carried out by passing water through brass tubes.

7) Regulating Valve: – A regulating valve has been provided to maintain the pressure of the system.

8) Lube oil strainer:- This is a filter to clean the lube oil. This filter cleans the bigger dirt particles of the
lube oil when it comes without filtration through By-pass valve.

DISTRIBUTION OF LUBE OIL

Now the lube oil is ready to be distributed to the different parts of the diesel engine wherever necessary
for the purpose of lubrication. Filtered lube oil is then distributed to:-

i. Lube oil pressure gauge:-

ii. Oil Pressure Switch(OPS) in case of GE governor:-

iii. Turbo Super Charger through micro filter:-

iv. Lube Oil Main Header:- From Lube oil main header it is further supplied to:-

a) Engine Crank Shaft Main bearing through S-pipe and for lubrication of vibration damper,

b) Big End Bearing OR Crank pin bearing ,

c) Small End Bearing OR Piston pin bearing through rifle hole,

d) Piston Crown for cooling of piston,

e) When Lube oil drops in sump some oil splashing by crank pin lubricates the liner wall.

v. Cam Shaft Bearing (Left and right side):- Lube oil flows through centralized drill hole to lubricate the
bush bearing of cam shaft. At right side lube oil also lubricates the OST assembly.

vi. Lube oil secondary header:-

(A) Left side:-

>Valve Levers:-

> Cam Roller and Fuel Cam Lobe:-

> Cam gear spray nozzle (shooting pipe):-

> FIPS:-

> Vibration Damper:-

(B) Right side:-

> Valve Levers:-

> Cam Roller and Fuel Cam Lobe:-

> Cam gear spray nozzle (shooting pipe):-

> FIPS

> Connection to Woodward governor (Low lube oil trip button)
