1 Safety Precautions
CAUTION
Before performing any operation, go through the instructions and precautions carefully to
minimize the possibility of accidents. The Caution, Warning and Danger items in other
documents do not cover all the safety precautions that must be followed. They are only
supplements to the safety precautions for operations as a whole. The personnel in charge of the
installation and maintenance must be trained to learn the proper operating methods and all safety
precautions. Only the trained and qualified personnel can install or maintain the device.
When operating the device, abide by the local safety regulations. The precautions listed in this
chapter are in compliance with the local safety regulations.
When operating the Huawei device, follow the full precautions and special safety instructions
from Huawei.
The personnel in charge of installation and maintenance must understand the basics of the safety
operations. Only trained and qualified personnel can install or maintain the device.
High Voltage
DANGER
l The high voltage power supply supplies power for the device operation. Direct or indirect
contact (through damp objects) with high voltage and AC mains supply may result in fatal
accident.
l Non-standard and improper high voltage operations can result in fire and electric shock.
Therefore, you must abide by the local rules and regulations when bridging and wiring AC
cables through a certain area. The personnel who perform high voltage operations must be
qualified for performing high voltage and AC operations.
l Do not wear conducting articles, such as watches, chains, bracelets and rings while
performing high voltage operations.
l Switch off the power supply immediately if you find water in the rack or if the rack is damp.
l Make sure that the device is kept away from water when being operated in a damp
environment.
Power Cable
DANGER
l Do not install or remove a live line. Transient contact between the core of the power cable
and the conductor might generate electric arc or spark, which can cause fire or damage to the
human body.
l During high voltage and AC operations, special tools must be used instead of common tools.
l Before installing or removing the power cable, turn off the power switch.
l Before connecting the power cable, make sure that the power cable and label conform to
the requirements of the actual installation.
Thunderstorm
DANGER
High voltage and AC operations, or operations on a steel tower and a mast on a thunderstorm
day are prohibited.
On a thunderstorm day, the electromagnetic field generated in the thunderstorm area may cause
damage to electronic parts. To prevent the device from being damaged by lightning, use proper
grounding.
Electrostatic Discharge
CAUTION
The static electricity generated by the human body can damage the electrostatic sensitive
components on the circuit board, such as the large-scale integrated circuit (LIC).
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is caused by body movement, friction between shoes and floor,
friction between clothes, and contact with plastic objects. ESD remains in the human body for
a long time.
Before touching the device or holding the boards, circuit boards, or ASICs, wear a grounded
ESD wrist strap. It can prevent the sensitive components from being damaged by the static
electricity in the human body.
Microwave
WARNING
Strong radio frequency can harm the human body.
Do not stay too close to the antenna in the emitting direction of the antenna when the microwave
communication equipment is working. Before installing or maintaining an antenna in a steel
tower or a mast with a large number of transmitter antennas, the operator should coordinate all
parties concerned to shut down the transmitter antennas.
Laser
WARNING
Laser radiation can cause injury to your eyes.
When handling optical fibers, do not stand close to or look into the optical fiber outlet directly
with naked eyes.
High Temperature
WARNING
When the ambient temperature is higher than 55℃, the surface temperature of the IDU boards
may exceed 70℃. In this case, wear protective gloves before touching the IDU boards.
Working at Heights
WARNING
When working at heights, prevent objects from falling down.
DANGER
During hoisting heavy objects, do not stand or walk under the boom or the objects.
Sharp Objects
WARNING
When carrying the device with hands, wear protection gloves to avoid injuries caused by sharp
objects.
IF Cable
WARNING
Before installing or removing the IF cable, turn off the ODU-PWR power switch on the IF board.
CAUTION
l When inserting a board, handle it gently to avoid distorting the pins on the backplane.
l Insert the board along the slot guide. Do not allow the board interfaces to come in contact
with that of another board as this can cause short-circuit or can damage the board.
l When holding a board in hand, do not touch the board circuit, components, connectors, or
the connection slots.
CAUTION
Bundle the signal cables separately from the strong current cables or high voltage cables. The
space between two adjacent ties must be at least 150 mm.

Prerequisite
l The IDU must be correctly installed in the cabinet.
l The protection grounding cable of the IDU must be installed.
Background Information
When you connect a fiber jumper to a board, select a correct type of fiber jumper based on the
type of the optical module equipped on the board.
l When the optical module equipped on the SL1/SD1 board is of the Ie-1 type, use multi-
mode fibers; when the optical module is of other types, use single-mode fibers.
l When the optical module equipped on the EMS6 board is of the 1000BASE-SX type, use
multi-mode fibers; when the optical module is of other types, use single-mode fibers.
l In the case of the SL4 board, use single-mode fibers.
Precautions
DANGER
Avoid direct eye contact with optical ports of the optical interface boards and fiber jumpers. The
laser beams emitted by the optical interface boards and optical fibers can cause eye damage.
Procedure
Step 1 Affix temporary labels to both ends of the fiber jumpers.
Step 2 Lead the fiber jumpers through the corrugated pipe.
Wrap adhesive tapes around the cuts of the corrugated pipe. Do not force the fiber jumpers into
the pipe to prevent the pipe from wearing out.
TIP
To facilitate the passing of fiber jumpers through a pipe, drop the jumpers from a high place such that they
fall into the pipe due to gravity.
Step 3 Route the corrugated pipe from the ODF to the cabinet. Lead the pipe through the fiber hole and
bind the pipe onto the hole.
If the fiber hole cannot provide enough space for the pipe to pass through, lead the pipe through
the cable hole and fasten the pipe.

The ODU with the waveguide interface includes 7–38 GHz ODUs. Such an ODU is installed
on an antenna in the integrated mounting mode or is connected to an antenna through a flexible
waveguide. When you install such an ODU, adopt proper installation procedures depending on
the configuration between the ODU and the antenna.
7.1 Introduction to the ODU
The ODU is the outdoor unit of the OptiX RTN 600. The ODU converts and amplifies signals.
7.2 Installing One ODU on One Single-Polarized Antenna (Integrated Mounting)
In this case, use four latches to directly mount an ODU on the back of a single-polarized antenna.
7.3 Installing Two ODUs on One Single-Polarized Antenna (Integrated Mounting)
In this case, install two ODUs on the back of a single-polarized antenna by using a hybrid coupler.
7.4 Installing One ODU on One Single-Polarized Antenna (Separate Mounting)
The ODU can be installed separate from the single-polarized antenna. In this case, the ODU is
installed onto an ODU adapter, which is connected to the single-polarized antenna through a
flexible waveguide.
7.5 Installing ODUs on One Dual-Polarized Antenna
Installing ODUs on one dual-polarized antenna is similar to installing one ODU on one single-
polarized antenna in the separate mounting mode. The difference between the two methods lies
in the method of adjusting the polarization direction of the antenna due to the fact that the dual-
polarized antenna has two feed booms.
Antenna
interface
NOTE
The previously described two configurations are for the single-polarized antenna.
Prerequisite
The antenna must be installed.
Precautions
l In the case of the Andrew antenna or RFS antenna, if the waveguide cavity in the feed boom
is round, the polarization direction of the antenna need not be changed.
l The antennas are available in multiple types. This procedure for changing the antenna
polarization direction is provided for reference only. In actual installation, follow the
instructions packed with the antenna.

2. 7.3.2 Setting the Antenna Polarization
By default, the antenna applies vertical polarization. If horizontal polarization is required,
rotate the feed boom at the back of the antenna to change the polarization direction of the
antenna. If the waveguide on the feed boom is a round waveguide, the polarization direction
of the antenna need not be changed.
3. 7.3.3 Installing the Hybrid Coupler on the Antenna
Use four latches and four bolts to mount the hybrid coupler on the antenna.
4. 7.3.4 Installing the ODU on the Hybrid Coupler
The hybrid coupler provides two ODU ports. Each ODU is mounted on the hybrid coupler
by using four latches.
For details on how to set the antenna polarization, refer to section 7.2.2 Setting the Antenna
Polarization.
Prerequisite
l The antenna must be installed.
l The antenna polarization must meet the network planning.

Figure A-1 Stripping back the cable sheath and the insulating layer
CAUTION
l During the operation, ensure that the core wire of the cable is not damaged.
l If the length of the stripped sheath in Step 1 is more than 16 mm, cut the cable wire to expose
only a length of 6 mm.
Step 4 Use the electric knife to strip back the dielectric insulating layer in front of clamp 2.
During the operation, the exposed cable wire should be 6 mm long.
NOTE
If the length of the stripped sheath is more than 16 mm, cut the cable wire in Step 4.
Step 5 Use a file to taper the edge of the core wire about 0.5 mm to make the top in an arc shape, and
clean out the metal filings.
Step 7 Connect the connector and the lock nut. Use a wrench to tighten the connection.
Use wrench 1 to rotate the lock nut and wrench 2 to position the body of the connector. The
recommended torque is 15±2 N•m.

C Checking the Cable Circuit
All the outdoor IF cable connectors and the grounding clips must be completely waterproofed.
Prerequisite
The outdoor connector or the grounding clip must be installed.
l PVC tape
Precautions
To facilitate the removal of tapes, first wrap a layer of PVC tape and then wrap the waterproof
insulation tape over the first layer.
Procedure
Step 1 Clean the connector or the grounding clip.
Step 2 Uncoil the waterproof insulation tape.
Step 3 Stick one end of the tape to the IF cable 2 to 5 cm away from the connector or the grounding
clip.
The sticky side should face inwards.
Step 4 Stretch the tape until it is 3/4–1/2 as wide as its original size. Stretch the tape in this manner
when performing the following steps.
Step 5 Wrap the cable spirally towards the connector or the grounding clip at a point that is 2 to 5 cm
away from the connector or the grounding clip. Make sure that the overlapping area of the
adjacent tape layers is 1/2 of the stretched width.
Step 6 When the tape reaches a point that is 2 to 5 cm away from the connector or the grounding clip
on the other side, reverse the wrapping direction so that the tape reaches the starting point.
Step 7 When the tape reaches the starting point, reverse the wrapping direction so that the tape reaches
the other ending point.
That is, there are three layers of waterproof insulation tape.
Step 8 After wrapping, squeeze the tape until it sticks to the cable. This ensures that there is no air
between the layers of tape.
Step 9 Similarly, wrap three layers of PVC tape over the waterproof insulation tape.
During the wrapping, maintain the stretched length such that the width of the PVC tape is 3/4
to 1/2 of the original size.
Step 10 After waterproof processing, use the outdoor bundling strap to bind the PVC tape tightly at the
positions 1 cm away from the wrapping edges at both ends, to prevent aging and falling off of
the PVC tape.

During cable routing, bundling, and installing of connectors, there may be short circuits or open
circuits in cables. Hence, it is necessary to test the cables after all the procedures are complete.
This section describes how to use a multimeter to test a cable with the DB44 connector at one
end and one group of SMB connectors at the other end.
Procedure
Step 1 According to the pin assignment of the DB44 connector, use the short-circuiting line to short-
circuit two pins that correspond to an SMB connector.
Step 2 Use the multimeter to measure the resistance between the internal and external conductors of
the SMB connector. The resistance should be zero ohms.

Short-circuiting
pins 23 and 38 R1
NOTE
Figure C-1 shows how to check the circuit of connector R1. The tip and ring of the core of connector R1
are pin 23 and pin 38 respectively based on the pin assignment table. Hence, short-circuit pin 23 and pin
38 when checking the circuit.

Routing and bundling cables according to regulations guarantees the reliable transmission of
signals.
D.1 Cabling
When routing cables, ensure that signals are transmitted reliably, and also ensure that future
maintenance is easy.
D.2 Bundling
Cables must be tightly bundled. The bundled cables should be neatly arranged.
D.3 Bundling Fiber Jumpers
Use a special binding strap to bundle fiber jumpers.
D.1 Cabling
When routing cables, ensure that signals are transmitted reliably, and also ensure that future
maintenance is easy.
l Signal cables should be routed separately from power cables, fiber jumpers, and jumpers.
l The specifications and cross-sectional area of the cable, and the route and position for the
cabling should be designed beforehand. All the cables should be arranged neatly.
l Cable turns should be smooth. The bending radius of cable turns should be larger than 60
mm, and the bending radius of fiber turns should be larger than 40 mm.
l There should be no damage to the insulating layer of the conducting wire.
l Cables that are routed along the wiring frame must be bundled.
They should be bundled closely with appropriate tightness. The spacing between cable ties
should be even.
l Cables in troughs do not need to be bundled. They should be placed neatly and in a straight
manner without any crossover. The cables should not protrude from the trough. The cables
should be bundled with cable ties at the inlets, outlets, and at the turns of the trough.
l IDU cables should be routed along the left and the right to facilitate operations, and should
not cover the board indicators.
In other words, the cables of the boards in the left slots should be routed to the left of the
cabinet and those in the right slots should be routed to the right of the cabinet.
l Leave enough slack when connecting cables to the IDU to facilitate insertion and removal
of the boards and the fan box. In the case of the IDU 620, the cables of the boards on the
left should have enough slack so that they can be routed away from the front of the fan box.
