Answer All Questions:
(a) (3 points) Explain in details, how can we get the series and shunt parameters of the
approximate equivalent circuit of single-phase transformer in the lab. And explain how can we
get the following conditions?
i. Maximum efficiency at constant value of terminal voltage and load power factor.
ii. Maximum efficiency at constant value of terminal voltage and load current.
iii. Negative voltage regulation.

(b) (7 points) A 6kVA, 250/500 V, transformer gave the following test results
short-circuite 20 V ; 12 A, 100 W and Open-circuit test : 250 V, 1 A, 80 W
i. Determine the transformer equivalent circuit.
ii. calculate applied voltage, voltage regulation and efficiency when the output is 10 A at
500 volt and 0.8 power factor lagging.
iii. Maximum efficiency, at what percent of full load does this maximum efficiency occur?
(At 0.8 power factor lagging).

iv. At what percent of full load does the effeciency is 95% at 0.8 power factor lagging.

(a) (3 points) Derive and sketch the relation between angular velocity and induced torque for

series DC motor.

(b) (7 Points) DC machine (12 kW, 100 V, 1000 rpm) is connected to a 100 V dc supply and is

operated as a dc shunt motor. At no-load condition, the motor runs at 1000 rpm and the armature takes

6 amperes.

(i) Find the value of the resistance of the shunt field control rheostat Radj .

(ii) Find the rotational losses at 1000 rpm.

(iii) Find the speed, electromagnetic torque, and efficiency of the motor when rated current flows in the
(1) Consider that the air gap flux remains the same as that at no load.
(2) Consider that the air gap flux is reduced by 5% when rated current
flows in the armature because of armature reaction.
(iv) Find the starting torque if the starting armature current is limited to
150% of its rated value.
(I) Neglect armature reaction.
(II) Consider armature reaction, If(AR) = 0.16 A.

(10 points) The following test results are obtained from three phase 100hp,460 V, eight pole star
connected induction machine No-load test : 460 V, 60 Hz, 40 A, 4.2 kW. Blocked rotor test is
100V, 60Hz, 140A 8kW. Average DC resistor between two stator terminals is 0.152 Ω
(a) Determine the parameters of the motor equivalent circuit.
(b) The motor is connected to 3ϕ , 460 V, 60 Hz supply and runs at 873 rpm. Determine the
input current, input power, air gap power, rotor cupper loss, mechanical power developed,
output power and efficiency of the motor.
(c) Determine the speed of the rotor field relative to stator structure and stator rotating field.

(a) (3 points) State the required condition for interconnecting synchronous generator to infinite
bus. Then explain how can you perform the synchronization process in the lab?

(b) (7 points)A three-phase, 250 hp, 2300 V, 60 Hz, Y-connected nonsalient rotor synchronous
motor has a synchronous reactance of 11 ohms per phase. When it draws 165.8 kW the power
angle is 15 electrical degrees. Neglect ohmic losses.
(i) Determine the excitation voltage per phase, Ef.
(ii) Determine the supply line current, la.
(iii) Determine the supply power factor.
(iv) If the mechanical load is thrown off and all losses become negligible,
(1) Determine the new line current and supply power factor.
(2) Draw the phasor diagram for the condition in (i).
(3) By what percent should the field current If be changed to minimize
the line current?
