SECTION A (Compulsory)
Answer one (1) question from this section

Question 1
Activities and their interdependencies for a construction project are given in Table 1.1. Use
the information given to:

(a) Construct a network precedence diagram for these activities (10 marks)

(b) Determine earliest and latest times for all activities and calculate activity floats
(12 marks)

(c) Clearly identify the critical path on the network diagram (2 marks)

(d) Explain what will happen to the process: (1) if activity H is delayed by 4 weeks;
and (2) if activity F is delayed by 5 weeks. (6 marks)

(e) Draw a bar chart from the network based on early start schedule (i.e. assume all
activities start as early as possible) and late start schedule i.e. assume all
activities start as late as possible.

Question 2
EDDUMA CONSTRUCTION has just appointed you as the project manager for one of its
very important construction project. The project is at the end of its fifth week. Using the
project performance data shown in Table 2.1;
(a) Calculate the Cost Variance, Schedule Variance, Cost Performance Index,
Schedule Performance Index, the Estimate at Completion and the Estimate to
Complete.
(30 marks)

(b) Prepare a status report on the project for the Managing Director’s (MD)
presentation at the next site meeting. Assuming this is the first report on the
project, advise your MD on how to avoid this type of situation on this and on
future projects.

Question 3
You have been hired by a UK based company as a project manager on a large project for an
overseas client. Your boss emphasised that because of this project environment, two of the
critical skills needed for success on the project are team building and team leadership.
Explain why the two issues are of critical importance on an international project and discuss
other attributes that would help the project manager complete this project successfully.
(20 marks)

Question 4
The strategic PMP/PEP is the first planning document prepared by the consultant project
managers for the construction project. The PMP/PEP is often prepared before the initial
designs for the project have been completed. Explain what is meant by a Project
Management Plan and describe the key strategic issues that are needed for planning
purposes, namely: Statement of Work, Work Breakdown Structure, Organisational
Breakdown Structure and Task Responsibility Matrix with examples.

Question 5
One of the most important aspects of successful project management is effective
stakeholder management. Explain what is meant by stakeholder management and discuss
how the project manager can ensure stakeholder co-operation.

Question 6
Define “Quality” and explain why quality may mean different things to different stakeholders.
Illustrate your explanation with examples. Also, discuss the main components of a Quality
Management System (QMS) referring to Total Quality Management and Quality Assurance
(QA).
