CHAPTER I

Introduction

We are in the 21st century and according to ivywise, self-studying is on the rise.

These days, learning is not just limited in the classroom and in the traditional way of

teaching. A lot of students, especially the achievers, really a lot time for them to study at

home without the help of anybody. And with the technology we have today, it is not that

difficult and inconvenient for students to study by themselves because there are a lot of

materials to use that are available online.

Statement of the Problem

• How does the time spend on self-studying affects the academic performance?

• How much time do students usually spend on self-studying and why do they

prefer it than any other study habits?

• What is the academic performance of the students?

• What is the relationship between the duration of time spent in self-studying and

the academic performance of the students?

• What is the importance of self-studying?

Research Objectives
 This research aims to prove if there really is a relationship between self-studying

and the academic performance of a student.

 To know if a student who spends more time in self-studying also has a higher

academic rating.

 To know the most effective duration a student should spend in self-studying.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research will focus on identifying the relationship between the time spent by

a student on self-studying and his academic performance. The participants of the study

will be the senior high school students of St. Dominic Academy of Pulilan, Inc., school

year 2018-2019. The participants will be randomly selected regardless of their track and

strand. Although the research will find the relationship between the variables, this will

not discuss the most effective way of self-studying. This study will only find the answers

on how the variables are related to each other.

Significance of the Study

The study will be beneficial to the following:


Administrators. The administrators will be aware if the students need time to self-

study for them to improve their academic performance. If so, they may give time to the

students since they are the ones who decide their schedule.

Teachers. The teachers will know the recommended time for students to self-

study. They may consider giving them time before their examination.

Students. The students will be mindful if they should a lot time for self-studying

for them to increase their academic rating.

Parents. The parents will gain information regarding the effectiveness of self-

studying and so they will encourage their children to do it.

Researchers. The researchers will have a deeper understanding on the relationship

between the time spent on self-studying and academic performance.
