21st Biennale of Sydney
The latest iteration of the Biennale of Sydney presents the work of 70 artists and artist collectives
from Africa, Asia, Australia, North America, South America and Europe at seven venues across
the city: the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW), Artspace, Carriageworks, Cockatoo Island, Museum
of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), Sydney Opera House and 4A Centre for Contemporary
Asian Art until 11 June 2018. The works form personal responses to the curatorial theme
‘SUPERPOSITION: Equilibrium & Engagement’, which focuses on multi-layered perspectives of
the world and its histories that simultaneously interact and create balance.
Among the highlights are Ai Weiwei’s Crystal Ball (2017) at Artspace, examining the complex
future of our world in the face of the current global humanitarian crisis; Marco Fusinato’s
Constellations (2015/2018) at Carriageworks inviting visitors to hit a home run by striking a
baseball bat against a white wall as microphones transmit 120db through the gallery space –
intensifying the impact and emotion; Tom Nicholson’s addition to Untitled wall drawing (2009-
2018) – a matrix of painstakingly handwritten words narrating a geopolitical history of the 20th
century at the MCA; Oliver Beer’s ongoing ‘Resonance Project’ at Sydney Opera House exploring
the complex relationship between sound and space; and Akira Takayama’s ‘Our Songs – Sydney
Kabuki Project’ at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art – a recording of volunteers aged 5-94
years who expressed their stories through song and prose in different languages.
Public programs include daily guided-tours, artist and curator-led talks, lectures, workshops,
performances, panels and screenings as well as after-hours events.

APY Gallery opens in Sydney
With shared ideas of creating new and lasting opportunities for Indigenous artists from remote
communities of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands located in the Far North of
South Australia, the APY Art Centre Collective of ten Indigenous owned and governed enterprises
have recently launched the new APY Gallery at 45 Burton Street, Darlinghurst.
This Aboriginal cooperative aims to support emerging APY artists to further develop their artistic
skills and practices, engage with audiences on a broader scale, build strong networks within the
arts, and provide them with the tools needed to work towards successful careers in their chosen
íHOGVrFDUU\LQJZLWKWKHPWKHNQRZOHGJHSDVVHGRQE\WKHLUJUDQGSDUHQWVWKHVHQLRUPHQDQG
women of the APY Lands.
Throughout the year the APY Gallery’s exhibition program will showcase paintings, traditional
punu (wood) carving, weaving, textiles, new media and digital photography.
This month, until 14 April, ‘Malatja tjutangku ara irititja kunpungku kanyini – Old Knowledge,
Young Blood’ presents a selection of artworks from across the APY Lands. Then from 19 April
to 12 May ‘A Cowboy Story’ by artist, country musician and retired stockman, Jimmy Pompey,
sharing his memories of the times he worked on cattle stations with his brother.
Through this initiative the APY Collective empowers the younger generation of the Anangu
Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands with pathways to resilience and a platform to continue
telling their stories.

the single moment into an elongated, deeply immersive space that is at once spellbinding

Babanyu (Friends for life)
Dr Laetitia Wilson
For First Nations people, painting is an essential medium to communicate cultural knowledge,
connection to Country and socio-political realities. Indeed in all cultures painting inscribes
memories; it is a symbolic language that acts as a record for current and future generations. This
is poignantly expressed in the art of Julie Dowling, a Perth-based artist and activist of Budimaya
descent who intimately pictures the stories of her family and the profound injustices faced by
Aboriginal people. The Art Gallery of Western Australia presents Dowling in the ‘WA Now’ series
with the exhibition ‘Babanyu (Friends for life)’.
Filling the gallery is 39 portraits of the artist, her family and friends, and on entering the space
we are met with the piercing glare of multiple eyes – impairing the usual chasm between subject
and object; viewer and viewed. The gazes are direct; forbidding us from turning away by making it

as Badimaya when she appears ‘so white’. The artist questions both their right to ask and their

Suburbia
Giselle Stanborough
Suburbia is the stuff of nostalgia and nightmares. Recent trends in town planning have marked
a shift against private and demarcated plots that characterise the sprawling homogeneity of
picket-fenced peripheries. More contemporary urban developments illustrate a renewed interest
in public and community-oriented spaces and infrastructure. It is not cars, but computers that
capture the technological zeitgeist, and since we can take our screens with us, people nowadays
are keen to get out of the house and have more meaningful collective experiences in shared
spaces. Thus, suburbia is an aptly critical and playful premise for the inaugural exhibition at
Cement Fondu, a new arts space in Sydney that aims to vary and vivify the way we engage with arts,
culture and each other.
Curatorially, ‘Suburbia’ examines complex political issues that are literally close to home, such
as migration and colonisation. Deep connections between identity and place are emphasised in
works by Tangentyere artists Nerine Tilmouth, Louise Daniels and Elizabeth Nampitjinpa, whose

whether that is on Country, at the local supermarket, or in the artist’s own doorway.
34
The gravity of the exhibition’s more contentious elements is balanced by an idiosyncratically
Australian humour that appears at once to be self-deprecatory and celebratory. Chris Dolman’s
cartoonish works playfully extend the body beyond its physical limits and hint at narratives with a
darkly absurdist undertone. As collaborators and friends, Rosie Deacon and Emily Crockford take
RYHU&HPHQW)RQGXnV3URMHFW6SDFHZLWKDG\QDPLFDQGSDLQWHUO\îRXULVKRIFRORXUSRSXODWHG
by Australian plants and animals. This installation forms an exciting and inviting garden where
audience members can spend time exploring the vast scale and elaborate details of Deacon and
Crockford’s reinterpretation of the gallery’s own locality, Paddington.
‘Suburbia’ combines diverse art forms and practices with complex references to location and
temporality in order to reframe divisions between the familiar and strange. The show rewards

be my eyes
Sophia Cai
Celeste Chandler’s latest solo exhibition ‘be my eyes’ at The Gallery at Bayside Arts & Cultural
Centre is a visual story nearly 150 years in the making.
The starting point for the exhibition is two anonymous historical paintings in the Bayside City
Council collection dated 1859. Little is known about these portraits or their sitters – a young
woman and a young man who both look directly at the viewer – and the works have never been
SXEOLFO\H[KLELWHG$OHWWHUIURPWKHGRQRULQFRQíUPVWKDWWKHIHPDOHVXEMHFWLVDOVRWKH
artist of both works, but her name or the history of them remains unknown.
In ‘be my eyes’, Chandler exhibits a series of paintings that directly respond to the Bayside
portraits. Fascinated with the way painting can take on the subjectivity of its sitter and become

artistic intervention.

LIFE IS SEXY
Melissa Pesa
In his examination of Western popular culture and its desires, Sydney artist Heath Franco asks the
fundamental question, ‘What is sexy?’
‘LIFE IS SEXY’ features a cast of rather Lynchian eccentric, grotesque characters clad in garish
clothing who occupy the streets of Times Square in New York, the casinos of Las Vegas or the
Sunset Strip in California. Improvised by Franco – the sole performer – personalities include:

a painterly mess, illustrating the chasm between media-shaped expectations and reality. Franco
borrows Baudrillard’s notion of hyper-reality – one that combines opposing concepts like real and
illusion, fact and fantasy – by hyperbolically playing with multiple realities to generate a parallel
world where concepts of ‘fun’, ‘hot’ and ‘sexy’ are all attainable. The work echoes the semantic
extension and overuse of these shallow terms throughout the Paris Hilton-era. Franco searches
for ‘desire and sexiness (be it real or faux)’, writes Katherine Guiness in the an essay for The
National, ‘in palm trees, sunsets, doughnuts, neon, tanning, leisure, sparkly nail polish, bronze
families, mall picnics, and the spurting water features forged from the barren deserts of western
cities’. He constructs a ‘sin city’, the primal scene of sexuality, satisfying our fantasies of wealth
and the excesses of pleasure and consumption.
Franco brings this sexiness back to Australia in psychedelic montages, disillusioned realities,
simulated narratives, repetitive gestures, and memorable jingles looped to create distressed
rhythms and risqué climaxes. Replete with subversive double entendres, the work captures

Printmaking stimulates visualisation and exchange in
the activities of Wollongong-based artist Ihlein. Across
his work involving socially engaged art, agriculture
and environmental management, he expresses an
affinity with print media. This exhibition surveys his
printmaking activities focusing on artist-led contexts
including Squatspace, Big Fag Press and Teaching
& Learning Cinema, and presents editioned and
intervention/performance related artworks highlighting
Ihlein’s promotional flair, appreciation for the
economies of print and commitment to grassroots
change. Supported by the School of Communication
