5th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
To get a very important job, we imagine that
you might have to do years of studying, go
through lots of difficult interviews, know the
right people. What does Peter do to become
a follower of Jesus and then later become
the leader of the early Church? Well, reading
this Sunday’s Gospel it might almost seem
like it was a bit of an accident, Jesus was
preaching to the people and it was so
crowded and there was so little space, he hit
upon the idea of getting into a fishing boat
and using it as a sort of floating pulpit, and
that boat just happened to be Peter’s-
(interestingly I once heard someone explain
that the useful thing about this would be
that the effect of the water would also
amplify Jesus’ voice, creating a natural P.A
system!)
Peter responds to Jesus’ request for help
with simplicity, and a readiness to give a
hand… he could have just said, ‘Look I need
to clean my nets, they are not going to clean
themselves.’ But he drops what he’s doing to
help out. He probably didn’t expect what
happens next; most likely he thought the
session was over when Jesus finishes
speaking to the people.
But then Jesus makes this surprising request
that he row into the deep water and put out
his net for a catch. How can we interpret
this? I hear here that Jesus is saying, ‘I’m not
just asking you to help out a bit, you have
the capacity in you to really be like me, a
person whose love and commitment can be
a real channel of God’s love in the world.’
If we can hear Jesus saying the same thing to
us, we might respond like Peter, ‘I’ve
worked hard all night long and caught
nothing’: as if to say, ‘I’ve tried really hard to
change things, but it doesn’t feel it’s gone
anywhere. You Lord, might see potential, I
just see the failures and the mistakes’.
But the really important thing is that Peter
doesn’t stay there, he says to Jesus, ‘but if
you say so I will have a go, I’ll put out the
nets’. His faith, his willingness to let God be
bigger than his doubts, his fears and his
failures, means that he sees the miraculous
catch, the amazing things that God can do
through him.
So Peter didn’t go through complicated
training or rigorous interviews to become
the leader of the Church. At the end of the
day the key thing was not letting his own
bad experiences and doubts limit his trust in
what God could do in his life.
I believe it wasn’t just an accident that Jesus
ended up in Peter’s boat, it was because of
the dream and plan that God had for his life.
And the same goes for us: God sees our
potential, which is hidden deep within us, to
make a difference to others, which often we
don’t believe is there, and he dreams for us
too. The invitation is not to let our doubts
and fears close the door on those dreams,
but to let God’s surprising grace be bigger,
to let God have the last word.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT
The Fairtrade fortnight is an annual
event in which fair and ethical trading
values are celebrated. A daily ‘cuppa’ for
you can mean clean water for tea farmers
and workers. Come along and join us
for this year’s “BIG BREW”, led by our
Confirmation Candidates on
2 & 3rd March after each Mass.

If you are a member

course will provide the opportunity to
explore the foundation of the Christian
faith. Each session starts with a meal,
followed by a talk and then a discussion
in small groups. The course will be held
on Monday evenings in the Parish Hall

What is “Justice and Peace”?
It’s about wanting to make a difference,
witnessing to gospel values in society,
not only by helping those close at hand,
or sending gifts overseas, but asking why
problems are arising, and whether we
can speak up for change. We are
currently working on such things
as climate protection, Fairtrade, the
refugee situation, and peace in the
Middle East. Justice and Peace reps can
publicise our work, maintain a parish
notice board, or raise awareness in the
parish. Can you be your parish Justice
