Wildcats’ 2018 Season Preview

The Checotah Wildcat fans will have a lot to celebrate in the 2018 season. With the implementation of a new high octane offense and several key return starters on both sides of the football and a nucleus of underclassmen, the Wild- cats are posed to erase their 5-5 record of 2017. Head coach Chad Hendricks handed off the offense to co-offensive coordinators Brian Young and Robert King while Jimmy Whitlock returns as defensive coordinator. Hendricks added

ly with senior quarterback and state wrestling champion Cade Shropshire returning as quarterback. Shropshire threw for over 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns last season and this season he has more deep threats to throw to, like Jacob Barrett (6’2”, 170 lbs.)), Hunter Hamilton (6’, 165 lbs.), Collin Roberts (6’2”, 210 lbs.), and the most exciting run- ning back in the district, Zion Nichols (5’11”, 145 lbs.). In addition, Hendricks has several underclassmen that will fill in nicely such as running back Trenton Dan (5’10”, 185 lbs.), Matt Clover (5’5”, 145 lbs.) Dontiere Fisher (5’10”, 175 lbs.) and Omarion Warrior (6’1.5, 280 lbs.). Defense With only three veterans

tion including senior Collin Roberts, who made an incred- ible 115 tackles from his line- backing spot. Roberts will have help with Dakota Cope- land (5’11”, 195 lbs.) in addi- tion to having great speed on the outside with Nichols, Bar- rett, Dan, Fisher, Troy McNac (5’9”, 180 lbs.). Chance Wood (6”280 lbs.) along with Dugger will anchor the nose guard position while Whitlock will cycle linemen throughout the game to keep pressure on the quarterback.

District 3A-3 breakdown predictions

District 3A-3 breakdown predictions The Lincoln Christian Bulldogs are the early favor- ites in a district

The Lincoln Christian Bulldogs are the early favor- ites in a district that could be the best in Oklahoma high school football. (Photo submitted)

By no stretch of the imagi- nation does the new alliance of districts help any team in 3A-3. This district alone could be the toughest district in Okla- homa high school football. Look for Lincoln Christian,

Idabel, Checotah and Semi- nole to end the season in the top four spots with the Stigler Panthers on the edge of mak- ing the playoffs. The Bulldogs of Lincoln Christian posted a 5-7 record in 2017 but don’t

that fool you. They return six starters on offense including quarterback Chase Ricke, who

threw for 3,056 yards and 25 touchdowns. Idabel also had a playoff season with a record of 8-5 including an appearance in the quarterfinals. Defensively, the Warriors have great speed and size to cover most receiv- ers but lacking the size up front. The Seminole Chieftains finished the year 8-3 and made the second round of the play- offs. Quarterback Cade Ham- mond threw for 1,285 yards and 13 touchdowns and running back Jamon Dennis rushed for 1,000 yards and co-running back Cameron Gunville ran for 900 yards. Defensively, the Chieftains are inexperienced and weak up front, but don’t count them out of forging to the top of the district as the season goes on. The Checotah Wildcats have the experience and the numbers alone to be a threat

to any team. Cade Shropshire

returns to form along with

a giant offensive line led by

Todd Lackey and running

back Zion Nichols. Checotah may have gained more speed

defensively and more experi- enced with Jacob Barrett and Dakota Copeland. The Wild- cats will be tough to push off

the

defensive front led by Bobby Morton.

Knight ends collegiate baseball career at University of Virginia, signs with Cubs

Former Checotah baseball stand- out and collegiate baseball player Caleb Knight ended his college career at the University of Virginia and saw his dream of playing in the major league come true as the Chicago Cubs signed him. The senior catcher graduated with tre- mendous stats and the desire to play at the next level. The Baseball Draft Report for Knight read, “may just be the one true king of getting hit by very fast baseballs after all. My rough math (as of this writing) has him at a whopping 9.6 percent career HBP rate. That is absolutely insane. If you include his two years at junior college (thus increasing the sample to an even meatier 697 collegiate PA), that figure drops down to a still wild 6.6 percent. No matter how you look at it, Knight knows how to take a pitch off the body like very few ballplayers before him. It’s worth not- ing that the Virginia catcher’s approach at the plate includes more than just “wait until something gets close and lean it.” Knight has a career 42 BB/43 K mark over two seasons as a Cavalier. With a little bit of pop to go with that, there’s enough offensively working for Knight that he could carve out a long career as a minor league catcher with a shot to one day reach the big leagues as a backup if you buy into his defense behind the plate.” “This is incredible. Caleb had the best

work ethic of any player I ever coached and he paid his dues and earned his way to making this dream come true. Checo- tah is very proud of him and wish him and his family the best,” Checotah head coach Tom Butler said. Knight was the first recipient of the McIntosh County Sportsman of the Year award in 2014 after leading the football team to a district championship and the baseball team to post season.

McIntosh county War

The McIntosh County rival- ry goes back before statehood. At this time, the courthouse was located in two buildings on the corner of 1st and Foley Avenues in Eufaula. One on the Southeast corner was used for offices, the other building on the Northeast corner was used for holding court. After statehood, a two-story build- ing on the Northeast corner of Main Street and Riley Ave- nue was rented and the court- house was moved there. In July 1925, the building burnt and many county records were lost. After the fire, spac- es in buildings all over town were rented for offices and courtroom. In 1926 a new courthouse

was built at 110 North 1st Street, Eufaula. The archi- tect for this new building was Layton, Hicks and Roesyth. The contractor was Tankersly Construction Company. Dissention occurred after statehood between Eufaula and Checotah because both towns wanted the county seat. In 1908, a large group of armed men boarded the train at Che- cotah and came to Eufaula with the intention of forcibly moving the county seat. When the men left the train in Eufaula, city Mayor R.B. Buford sent C.L. Follansbee to get Grant Johnson to assist City Marshall Woods in main- taining law and order. Before Johnson could get to town,

Woods and Joe Parmenter, Checotah City Marshall, got into an argument at a well on the Northeast corner of Main and Foley Streets. Shooting began and Woods was killed. Story goes that Parementer killed him, however citizens from both cities were involved in the shooting and it was impossible at the time to fix blame. The Checotah people returned home empty-handed, but the next day, a man named “General” Dunlap (“General” was a nickname), who lived north of Eufaula, came into town and said he was going to kill Ed Julian because of some controversy over the fight the day before. Julian was a coun-

ty official who lived in Che- cotah, but stayed at the Foley Hotel in Eufaula. The Foley Hotel was located above the First National Bank building on the Northwest corner of Foley and Main Streets. Dunlap went up the stairs to Julian’s room. He knocked on the door and ordered Julian to come out. After threats were exchanged through the locked door, Julian became fright- ened and fired bullets through the door, killing Dunlap on the spot. Julian was arrested and a hearing was held but he was released due to the fact that he had killed Dunlap in self-defense. Paraphrased from a 1939 Indian Journal.

History defines McIntosh County rivalry

The football rivalry between the McIntosh Coun- ty’s biggest schools, Eufaula and Checotah, has been a vital instrument and the founda- tion of a steamroller that pro- duced some of the greatest coaches and players to have ever graced the field. The rivalry has continued through two world wars, 18 United States Presidents, countless conflicts and battles. McIntosh County has pro- duced six legendary Hall of Fame coaches in Eufaula’s Paul Bell, Johnny Bohannon and Perry Anderson and Che- cotah’s Ray Grandstaff, Leon Dixon and Truman Dixon. That level of coaches is alive and well in McIntosh County. Eufaula’s Larry Newton Jr. and Checotah’s Chad Hen- dricks are the mirror image of the Bell and Grandstaff duo. Both coaches are best friends except for that one week of the year when both face the other on opposite sides of the grid- iron. There is little that each coach does not know about the other after working on the same Skiatook football for six years before coming to McIn- tosh County. Both not only coached together, but played against one another at the col- legiate level.

The one main common denominator that both share is the love they have for the game and the schools they rep-

Jim Derrick, Kerry Sharpe, Drew Dan, Caleb Knight, Cody Gilroy and Kendrick Shaver. Both schools have seen

coaches come and go but now they each have a coach that cares about their student ath- letes on and off the field and are very instrumental in the students’ decision-making process when it comes to being recruited. Bell, Grandstaff and Kerry Roberts (Former Eufaula head coach) not only produced won- derful and exciting athletes but fantastic citizens. In 101 years, the record is an incred- ible 51-49-1. That stat in itself should describe just how com- petitive this football rivalry is. From the days of Jr. Gold- ing and Bill Miner to the pres- ent day of Hunter Hiler and Seth Knight, quality athletes are still a product of this great rivalry and will be for the many decades to come.

Oklahoma State Cowboys shoot to the top

Oklahoma State University (OSU) head coach Mike Gundy is 114-53 in his 14 th season. OSU is one of only five schools to appear in every set of college football playoff rankings since 2015, joining Alabama, Clem-

Congratulations to the Checotah Wildcats and the Eufaula Ironheads
for being Oklahoma’s longest uninterrupted football rivalry.
Since 1915 both teams have fought hard and entertained
hundreds of fans every year.
We at the Checotah
Methodist Church pray that
members of both teams play
hard, are good sports and
finish injury-free.
We hope each team
member and every fan
remembers: “It’s not whether
you win or lose, but how you
play the game.”
