“T
o everything there is a season,

under the heavens. [Ecclesiastes
3:1]” Could it be that this biblical quote
applies to movies? Culturally, we observe
many different types of seasons: television
series, tax season, the weather, sports or
school. And then,
unofficially,
there’s Oscar sea-
son when most of
the really great
movies come out.
If you are a film

it’s best to pre-
mier your movie
in the fall when
Hollywood is
likely to remem-
ber it.
The summer film season is over and Oscar
season is upon us. What’s this summer sea-
son been like? It’s been hard to find really
great films, and when they came, they’ve
stayed in the local art houses either for a very
short time, or too long to have sufficient
movie turnover. That being said, here are
some of the highlights of the summer, in no
particular order:
1 and 2. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
and “The Girl Who Played with Fire.” Based
on two of the trilogy of best-selling Swedish
novels, these films really constitute an almost
seamless single story line. Fast-paced, and
sometimes too gruesome to behold, these
films can’t help but suck the viewer into the
story of a girl who survives horrendous
ordeals and fights back. These films have
become so popular that Hollywood is taking
up the story and adapting it for those who
want well-known actors and no subtitles to
read. And, stay tuned for the third film in the
trilogy — “The Girl Who Kicked the
Hornet’s Nest” due sometime next year.
3. “Solitary Man.” Michael Douglas gives
one of his best performances in a film that in
some ways mirrors some of the issues he’s
faced in his own life — not the cancer, how-
ever. I wish him a full and speedy recovery.
