Salvation in the Gospels

This is a follow up article to my previous one where I cited all of the major biblical verses
dealing with the subject of salvation and justification. Here I will focus on the testimony of
the four Gospels in order to show that they also agree that an individual is saved and
justified by the grace of God which a person receives through faith/belief apart from any
works of righteousness that a person does. The readers will further discover that people
were physically healed and made whole by their faith in Christ alone, showing that it is all
of grace and all by faith. And like my previous discussions, I will not be providing any in
depth exegesis of the texts since the purpose is to have the readers take this material and
study it on their own, and/or teach it in their Bible studies or Sunday school classes.
“And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it
done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.” Matthew 8:13
“And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying,
Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. And when he was come into the house, the
blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do
this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. Then touched he their eyes, saying, According
to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged
them, saying, See that no man know it. But they, when they were departed, spread
abroad his fame in all that country.” Matthew 9:27-31
“And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees
and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and
Judæa, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And,
behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought
means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And when they could not find by
what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the
housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before
Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven
thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which
speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus
perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your
hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and
walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive
sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy
couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up
that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they were all
amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen
strange things to day.” Luke 5:17-26
“And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. And they that sat at meat with him
began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And he said to
the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.” Luke 7:48-50
“Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away
the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.” Luke 8:12

down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had
touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter,
be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. While he yet spake,
there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, Thy
daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him,
saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.” Luke 8:43-50
“And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of
Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men
that were lepers, which stood afar off: and they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus,
Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew
yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were
cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a
loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and
he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but
where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this
stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.”
Luke 17:11-19
“And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were
righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a
Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself,
God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or
even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And
the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven,
but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this
man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that
exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”
Luke 18:9-14

by the way side begging: and hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it
meant. And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. And he cried, saying,

him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou Son of
David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto
him: and when he was come near, he asked him, saying, What wilt thou that I shall
do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight. And Jesus said unto
him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee. And immediately he received his
sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave
praise unto God” Luke 18:35-43
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even
to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the
flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man
be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal
life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his
Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be
saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is
condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten
Son of God… He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that
believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John
3:14-18, 36
“And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the
woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were
come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there
two days. And many more believed because of his own word; and said unto the
woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves,
and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” John 4:39-42

“And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then
came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto
you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and
reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but
believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus
saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are
they that have not seen, and yet have believed. And many other signs truly did
Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: but these
are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that
believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:26-31
I now include all of the verses from Acts and the epistles of John that deal with this topic,
seeing that these books were also written by two of the four Gospel writers, namely Luke
and John. We would therefore expect them to teach the very same thing about salvation that
the Lord Jesus did.
“And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the
south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is
desert. And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great
authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her
treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, was returning, and sitting in
his chariot read Esaias the prophet. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and
join thyself to this chariot. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the
prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said,
How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he
would come up and sit with him. The place of the scripture which he read was
this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his
shearer, so opened he not his mouth: in his humiliation his judgment was taken
away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the
prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? Then Philip opened his mouth, and
began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on
their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is
water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest
with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that
Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and
they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized
him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught
away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.”
Acts 8:26-39

him shall receive remission of sins.” Acts 10:43
“Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is
preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: and by him all that believe are
justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”
Acts 13:38-39
“And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the
