STATIC UPS TECHNOLOGY

SOLID-STATE TOPOLOGY
Power Systems & Controls specializes in static (solid-state) uninterruptible power supply
systems. A static uninterruptible power supply consists of a battery to provide continuous
electrical power, a rectifier to charge the batteries and provide input power to the inverter,
an inverter to provide power to the load during operation, a static switch to transfer load
automatically, a manual maintenance bypass switch, isolation transformers, and filters
(as needed) to provide additional isolation and disturbance attenuation.
A static UPS supports the critical load when utility power fails by utilizing batteries to
bridge the gap. Battery power is a group of electo-chemical cells connected to supply a
nominal direct current (DC) voltage to the inverter when required. The number of cells
connected in series determines the nominal voltage rating of the battery and the amount
of backup time available. The charger is the converter section of the UPS system, which
charges the batteries and supplies DC to the inverter.
When the rectifier/charger and battery are connected and start to regulate the voltage
supplied to the load, the system is known as a floating battery system. The load is the
inverter, which converts the DC power to AC power composed of a sine wave free from
harmonic distortion. The bridge circuit in modern PWM technology normally uses
insulated gate bipolar transistors (IBGT) for power switching. However, silicon controlled
rectifiers (SCR) are still widely used for their effective yet cheaper solution.
PS&C STATIC UPS SYSTEMS:
 Single Phase Continuum UPS
 Three Phase Continuum UPS
There are two types of static UPS systems available today. There is Line Interactive and
On-line (Double Conversion). Each offer unique benefits; however, the on-line UPS
systems will provide greater overall protection due to its more advanced design. Static
UPS systems offer many advantages, including: high efficiency, small footprint, low cost,
quiet operation, system protections, and rapid response to transient load changes.

SERIES CONTINUUM 1
Power Systems & Controls’ Series Continuum 1 is a small Static Uninterruptible Power
Supply (SUPS) system, which offers limitless protective power to an unprotected world.
The Series Continuum 1 is a single phase static UPS designed to support critical
commercial and industrial power users where system availability is of the utmost
importance. The single phase UPS offers high efficiency, double conversion, and true on-
line protection. Additionally, the UPS systems are so quiet that they can easily be placed
in a work space or in close proximity to personnel without any worry of sound
interference.

APPLICATIONS: BENEFITS:
 Commercial Facilities  Solid-State Topology
 Weapons Systems  Precision Voltage Regulation
 Manufacturing Facilities  Control & Fault Monitoring
 Rail & Hyrdo Facilities  PWM Inverter & Rectifier
 Sensitive Electronics  Integrated Quiet Design
 Test Lab & Research Centers  Vertical & Horizontal Configurations
 Critical Power Users  Multiple Output Capability
The Series Continuum 1 is a single phase UPS that utilizes a 3 stage charging
technique, which not only doubles the service life of the batteries but also optimizes the
charging time. It is the ideal solution for web servers, networks, telecommunications, and
other critical electronics. Whether your protecting a computer for a few minutes or a
million dollar piece of equipment for a few hours the static UPS can handle any load
requirement as PS&C is able to add external battery modules to the uninterruptible power
supply to increase the backup time available.
In addition to a solid and proven design, the Series Continuum 1 offers advanced battery
management, as well as, sophisticated communication to provide the best in system
reliability. Sizes are available from 1 – 20kVA in a range of voltage inputs and outputs.
They are available in a tower or rack mount configuration. It can also be outfitted with a
wide range of options ranging from remote communications to outdoor rated NEMA
enclosures to make it the perfect solution for any project.

SERIES CONTINUUM 3
Power Systems & Controls’ Series Continuum Static Uninterruptible Power Supply
(SUPS) system was developed for the most demanding power users. PS&C’s static
UPS is a double conversion, on-line, intelligent, universal, and heavy duty UPS. It
incorporates the latest technology in solid-state pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter
and PWM rectifier/charger controls available on the market today. This combined with the
use of an “All IGBT” topology allows for an extremely efficient double conversion process
for such a robust static system. The Static UPS systems come in single modules, as well
as, paralleled systems for complete N+X redundancy.

APPLICATIONS: BENEFITS:
 Tier 1, 2, 3, 4 Data Centers  True On-line Double Conversion
 U.S. Government Applications  High Speed Digital Controls
 Manufacturing & Industrial Facilities  Lower Audible Noise
 Critical Power Users  Small Overall Footprint
 Sensitive Electronics  Advanced Monitoring & Controls
 Test Lab & Research Centers  Advanced Communications Platf
 International Entities  50Hz & 60Hz Capability
The Series Continuum UPS modules have advanced paralleling capabilities to meet
any kVA requirement between 10 – 2,000kVA. They are also available in 50Hz and
60Hz, which is important for international corporations looking to streamline their
maintenance requirements. The robust design of the static UPS means it can operate in
the harshest of environments unlike most solid state equipment that demand ideal
conditions to ensure proper operation and end of life (EOL).
The continuous operation with 100% rated bypass provides the highest reliability against
input disturbances in the toughest of conditions. All units are microprocessor controlled
and operate with multiple communication technologies. The static uninterruptible power
supply offers complete system protection, monitoring, and manageability, which
guarantees maximum up time and reliability. The Series Continuum is easy to install and
service as they can be integrated into almost any commercial or industrial environment.
The Static Uninterruptible Power Supplies have a small footprint and were developed
with lightweight materials to reduce the cost of installation and transportation. The static
UPS comes with a simple to understand display and easy user friendly controls. It is also
available with battery monitoring and communications to help detect any problems. There
are also numerous options available ranging from a color touch screen display and
remote communications to specialized NEMA and ISO enclosures.
Do you know your PUE?
PUE stands for Power Usage Effectiveness and it is rapidly
becoming the number to know. In the past, data center managers
were simply asked to provide enough space, power and cooling to
support the IT equipment. Now, the same managers are being asked
to do it efficiently. PUE can be a helpful benchmark.

Introduced by the Green Grid, PUE is a measure of efficiency. It is

defined as: the total facility power consumed divided by the total IT
equipment power consumed. The total facility power is measured at
the utility meter for data centers. (For mixed-use facilities like an office
building that contains a data center, only the power needed for the
computer room should be measured or even estimated.) The facility
power includes everything that supports the IT equipment including
power, cooling, lighting, etc.

The IT equipment power is the load associated with servers, storage,

networking, work stations, etc., that are used in the data center. Of
course, the total facility power will always be greater than the power
required by the IT equipment. So the PUE calculation will always be
greater than one. But, how much greater?

A PUE of 1.0 would be an ideal situation: no power distribution losses,

no chillers, pumps or fans, etc. While that is not possible, industry
giants like Microsoft and Google are planning for PUE's of 1.2 or even
better. That would truly be best-in-class. Today, according to the
Uptime Institute, a typical data center has an average PUE of 2.5.
However, it is not uncommon to have a PUE of 3.0 or greater. This
means only 1/3 of the power is consumed by the IT equipment. Or,
put another way, 2/3 of the power (and the utility bill) is wasted!

Whether you are looking to go Green or lower your OpEx, knowing

your PUE is the first step. From there a step-by-step plan can be put in
place to move that number down.
