members of the Sociology faculty of MSU-Main.

Dr Ponce presented the revisions of the BA Sociology Program. (refer to slides)

COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS FROM THE PANEL:

Dr. Petalcorin:
 Program Outcomes (PO)
- PSG contains outcomes common to all programs and institutions (Section 6.1)…these should
be included in the proposal (refer to PSG p. 3; p. 15 in the proposal).
- Proposal must contain the following outcomes:
a. Common to all program
b. Common to social sciences
c. Specific program outcomes
- Be mindful of the arrangement/presentation of the program outcomes. Arrangement is
deductive (general to specific); there is however no existing agreed format.
 Program Education Outcomes (PEO)
- Absent in the proposal. These are also to be presented.
- How will students be five years from now?
o e.g. publication within 3 – 5 years after graduation; other projected outcomes will
be included
o impact of the training 5 years after graduation
o The Sociology graduates 3 – 5 years from now canm(example):
a. Publish paper
b. Present paper in international forum
o These are not included in the PO so that students can graduate with minimum
requirement.
- Revisions in 2023 must reflect the PEOs; tracer studies can verify – this becomes basis for
revision
 TATAK IIT – life-long attributes of the IIT graduate
 Leader – walk the talk; do thing’s right
 Innovator – improves things, environment, society…
 Excellent in scholastic field
 Peace-Builder – empathize; facilitate peace
 Culturally-sensitive – respect for dignity, gender…
 Environmentally responsible
- These will be incorporated in the proposal (general education framework) for IIT due on
April 2017. This includes operational definitions, indicators, and assessment tools.
 Syllabi Writing Workshop will be conducted by the Institute
- Uniqueness of the Institute must be embedded in the syllabi/curriculum.
 Assessment Tools
- Have you made assessment tools so as to gauge if the student has complied with the
program outcomes/objectives? re performance indicators (PI)
o We are required assessment tools per PI
 Rubrics
 Non-graded tools
 Essays, schematics (added by Dr Dizon)
 other measurement
o These are due on December 2017 (target); refer to History Department proposal (?)
o download Handbook on PEO (CHED Website)

General Comments from the panel:

Dr. Pinzon:
 refer to proposed code for course numberings
- refer to Chemistry Department course numbering
- PROPOSED CODE: 3 letters 3 numbers no space (for computer coding)
- GEC (General Education Code)
- Core/Mandated combined
o e.g. Lumads…./History of Muslims (GEM 111)
o Rizal (GEM 112)
Dr. Petalcorin:
 Why 161 units?
- Justify each subject in the curriculum that it has relevance in the program outcomes
- If none, remove the subject.
 If program outcome is not achieved, student cannot graduate, ergo, be responsible in making
the curriculum.

Prof. Torralba:
 Other subjects are redundant
Prof. Crisostomo:
 If outcome can be achieved with lesser number of units, much better

Dr. Ponce:
 What is the norm in the number of years to achieve program outcomes?

Dr. Petalcorin:
 No rules/norms provided; if you can do it with less, it’s ok.
 PSG does not specify.
 CHED: 4 years; minimum: 110 units (PE/NSTP not counted)
 Sample program of study: 3 years

Dr. Pinzon (referring to slide #1)

 Title: BA in Sociology (no major)
 All courses will be referred to as BA (no longer AB)

Dr. Petalcorin:
 6 units OJT? Must only be 3 units.
 Requirement is 152 hours (3 units equivalent); Socio proposes 320 hours to complete the
course.
Dr. Ponce:
 OJT units credit to student; faculty coordinator must be given credit because OJT in Socio is in
different communities

Dr. Petalcorin:
 It cannot be considered OJT if it is supervised by our faculty.

Dr. Ponce:
 Who will accept the work if credits are not given?

Dr. Petalcorin:
 It could be included as leave credits.
 Practicum/OJT/Field School (PSG does not indicate number of units)l PSG states it’s an elective.
 However, if you use Field School, it may justify 3 units for the faculty.
 [Dr Ponce asks MSU the term they use for OJT. Prof Taruc: Community Engagement Internship]
 If you define Field School as Community Engagement Internship, then that would merit the
faculty unit credits.
 But you have to provide syllabus for it.

Dr. Ponce:
 There is syllabus for it.

Dr. Dizon:
 Why do you have Sociology of Disaster? What is its framework? Do you have syllabus?

Dr. Ponce:
 There is syllabus for the subject. We have to integrate the subject in response to the current
situation that the world is experiencing right now. It used to be just elective.

Dr. Dizon:
 How about tribal mediation? Conflict, Crisis and Resolution? Do you offer these?

Dr. Ponce:
 These are incorporated in Sociology of Ethnicity and Peace Studies.

Prof. Dangdang:
 GEC subjects may be distributed throughout the curriculum, not necessarily first semester.
 Distribute by semester; not ‘wholesale’.
 Distribute loading to 8 semesters.

Dr. Pinzon:
 How is Gender and Society different from GEC 134?
 Have a different descriptive title. Make it disciplinal.

Dr. Petalcorin:
 Gender and Society is not disciplinal.

Dr. Ponce:
 We will replace with Sociology of Gender to make it disciplinal. This will focus on sociological
frameworks and analyses not included in Gender and Society/GEC 134.

Dr. Pinzon:
 Reminder: in noting prerequisites, only put the higher number/prerequisite subject.
 As regards faculty profile, do we need to put the TER? This is raised for ethical considerations.
Dr. Tabudlong:
 It is not in our forms but in the manual.

Dr. Petalcorin:
 Do not present it in the Institute Council meeting (for ethical considerations) but include it in the
University System Curriculum Review Committee as they may ask for it.
 REMINDER:
- 2 COPIES FPOR REGISTRAR AND OVCAA (Institute Council)
- UNIVERSITY SYSTEM: 16 copies/CDs
- BOR: CD
- UNIVERSITY COUNCIL: 25 copies
 Syllabi not complete yet.

Dr. Pinzon:
 Page 11: Campus Council Resolution? What is the heading? MSU-Main or MSU-IIT?
 Answer: MSU-IIT

Dr. Ponce:
 How about the graduates from non-academic tracks like TECHVOC/TVM students? How can we
accommodate them later?

Dr. Petalcorin:
 Offer bridging program for subjects that the TECHVOC students have not taken in Senior High.
 This is to accommodate bright students who could not take academic tracks which may not be
offered in their municipalities/areas.
 Number of units will depend on the need.
 To determine this, go the DepEd website and check competencies for both the course and TVM.
From there you can determine the required subjects/units for bridging.

Dr. Dizon:
 What is the justification for offering Sociology of Islam?

Dr. Ponce:
 This subject is pushed by MSU-Main because of the situation in Mindanao. This must be a
separate course from Sociology of Religion.
 This is required for Marawi; an elective in MSU-IIT.

RECAP BY DR PETALCORIN:
 PO specific for the discipline is the only one presented. Otherwise, other required documents
are in place.
 Include assessment tools
 Include PEO
 Comply all missing syllabi (obedized)
 Curriculum mapping – all course offerings should contribute to the program outcomes.
 No need to bring bound copies next meeting; just present the changes in digital form.
 For TER, use only qualitative description; not numerical equivalent.
Meeting adjourned: 11:28AM
