R1234yf

Why do we change to R1234yf?

To reduce global warming

R1234yf

Why do we change to R1234yf?

GWP = Global Warming Potential

• R134a: 1430
• R1234yf: 4
• CO2: 1

• R12: 10900
R1234yf

Why was this refrigerant chosen to replace R134a?

Advantage
• No damage to ozone layer
• Very low global warming potential
• Slightly more efficient
• Only small design changes needed to implement new refrigerant.

Disadvantage
• More expensive
• Not backwards compatible / No retrofit kits possible!
• Different compressor oil.
• Slightly flammable, but still safe to use inside vehicle cabin.
R1234yf

Properties • Same operating

conditions as R134a

• Thermally stable under

extreme use conditions
in a car AC system

• Cooling capacity
equivalent to R134a

• Energy efficiency better

or equivalent to R134a

• Only modest design

changes required in car
AC systems

Can it be mixed?

• Can it be mixed?
Yes, it can be mixed

• Does the AC system still works if mixed?

Yes, it works

• Does it cause problems?

Yes, it probably will

• Why would you mix?

R1234yf is 10 times more expensive then R134a
