Clinton football closing in on 800 wins

Week two of Clinton
football’s 2018 campaign
could feature a major ac-
complishment with the
Red Tornadoes battling
for win No. 800 in the Red
Tornadoes’ 100th season
in program history.
Every fall, Maxpreps.
com updates its nation-
wide, top-50 all-time
winningest high school
football program list.
Dallas/Fort Worth-
based paper, the Star-
Telegram, reposted the
list as well, giving cred-
ibility to the rankings.
Clinton consistently
falls in the top-25
schools and is one of
four schools represent-
ing the state of Oklaho-
ma this year. The rank-
ings placed Clinton at
No. 23 with an all-time
record of 798-287-37. For
the accomplishment to
happen at its earliest
possible date, the Reds
would have to defeat
Woodward on the road
in the season opener and
Heritage Hall at home in
week two.
Head coach John Hig-
bee talked about how
impressive the accom-
plishment was for the
program. He’s excited
to look back on the wins
achievement when the
2018 campaign concludes.
“For the Clinton Red
Tornado nation – that’s
important,” he said. “For
those people that started
this years and years and
years ago, it’s an impor-
tant landmark. There’s
no doubt about it.
“It’s a point of pride
to be a part of that, and
deservedly so. What can
you say? They have an
incredible reputation.
There have been a lot of
really, really fine ath-
letes and coaches that
have come through this
program. I’m proud to
be a part of it. I’m sure
it’s a milestone that’ll
mean something to us at
the end of the season.”
If the win were to
come against the Char-
gers in week two, Higbee
said it’d be something to
celebrate, but individu-
ally, he wouldn’t be fo-
cused on the milestone.
Those celebrations
come after the season.
A win over its private
school nemesis would
rank high by itself. As
much as he’s excited
about getting the win for
the town, he has bigger
thoughts for this year,
keeping the win and sea-
son in perspective.
“I’ll be honest, I’d be
more excited about the
win over Heritage Hall
in general than I would
about the 800 wins,” he
said. “The thought pro-
cess on accolades and
stuff like that comes after
when the season is over.
“When the season is
over, you look back and
evaluate what you’ve ac-
complished. To be quite
honest with you at the

Clinton is in the top 15
