ASSIGNMMENT 2 SKAA 3352

Figure 1 shows the first floor plan view of a reinforced concrete building where the beams
and slabs are cast together. The slab has a thickness of 175 mm. The slab carries permanent
action of finishing (NOT including the slab selfweight) of 1.5 kN/m2. The slab also carries
variable action of 4.0 kN/m2.

The design data are as follows:

Concrete compressive cylinder strength, fck = 30 N/mm2

Steel strength, fyk = 500 N/mm2
Nominal cover, c = 30 mm
Use main bar diameter = 10 mm

(a) Design the main and secondary reinforcements for the slab.
(b) Check the shear for the slab.
(c) Sketch the reinforcement detailing of the slab in the cross sectional view.
Figure 1
Figure 2 shows the layout plan of beams and slabs for the first floor of a reinforced concrete
building. The concrete for slabs and beams are poured together and the overall thickness of
the slab is 175 mm. Apart from self-weight, the slab carries characteristic variable action of
4.0 kN/m2 and characteristic permanent action from finishes of 1.0 kN/m2. The characteristic
strength of concrete and steel reinforcement is 30 N/mm2 and 500 N/mm2 respectively. The
nominal cover is 25 mm. Using the design data provided,

(a) calculate the design action acting on the slab

(b) determine all bending moment for slab panels P1, P2 and P3. Draw the bending
moment diagrams in the X-X and Y-Y directions and show all the important
values.
(c) design all the flexural reinforcement required by panel P2 only. Assume bar size
of 10 mm.
(f) sketch the reinforcement details of the slab panel P2 in plan view only.
