JCHS 9th Grade Course Placement Guidelines

2018-2019

The JCHS academic departments have set placement recommendations for courses based on
anticipated student success. JCHS has asked Autrey Mill 8th grade teachers to follow these
guidelines when making course placement recommendations for rising 9th graders. All
placement will be re-evaluated at the end of second semester. If you have questions about a
placement recommendation, please contact the classroom teacher.

Math Placement:
● Students currently in on-level 8th grade Math should be recommended for Algebra 1.
● Students currently in advanced 8th grade Math should have a 95% or higher to be
recommended for Accelerated Algebra 1/Geometry A Honors.
● Students currently in Accelerated Algebra 1/Geometry A should have an 85% or higher
to be recommended for Accelerated Geometry B/Algebra 2 Honors. All others should be
recommended for Geometry Honors. Students may choose to move to Geometry
Honors for 9th grade if they do not want to continue on the accelerated path.
● Students currently taking Geometry Honors will move to Honors Algebra II.
● Students currently in Accelerated Geometry B/Algebra 2 should have an 85% or higher
to be recommended for Accelerated Precal. Students with a 77%-84% should be
recommended for Honors Precal. Students with 76% and below should be
recommended for on-level Precal. Students may choose to move to Honors Algebra II if
they do not wish to remain on the accelerated path.

Science Placement: Science placement involves science AND math information.


● Science
○ Students currently in on-level 8th grade Science of the Physical World should
have a 95% or higher in science to be recommended for Biology Honors.
○ Students currently in advanced 8th grade Science of the Physical World should
have a 92% or higher in science to be recommended for Biology Honors.
○ Students currently in high school credit Physical Science should have a 90% or
higher in science to be recommended for Biology Honors.
○ All other students should be recommended for Biology.
● Math
○ Students currently in on-level 8th grade Math should have a 90% or higher in
math to be recommended for Biology Honors.
○ Students currently in advanced 8th grade Math should have an 85% or higher in
math to be recommended for Biology Honors.
○ Students currently in Algebra 1 Honors should have an 85% or higher in math to
be recommended for Biology Honors .
○ Students currently in Accelerated Algebra should have an 85% or higher in math
to be recommended for Biology Honors.
Language Arts Placement:
● Students currently in on-level 8th grade ELA should have a 95% or higher to be
recommended for 9th Lit Honors.
● Students currently in advanced/TAG 8th grade ELA should have an 85% or higher to be
recommended for 9th Lit Honors.
● Students currently in 9th Lit should have an 85% or higher to be recommended for 10th
Lit Honors.

Social Studies Placement:


● Students currently taking TAG 8th grade Social Studies AND TAG Language Arts should
have an 85% or higher in both SS and ELA to be recommended for AP Human
Geography (elective) or AP US Government (satisfies graduation requirement).
● Students currently taking non-TAG Social Studies OR non-TAG Language Arts should
have a 92% or higher in both SS and ELA to be recommended for AP Human
Geography (elective) and AP US Government (satisfies graduation requirement).
● Students recommended for AP American Government may be asked to submit a writing
sample- details to come.

World Language Placement:


● Students currently in 8th grade Spanish/French/Latin should have a 95% or higher to be
recommended for Spanish 2 Honors, French 2 Honors, or Latin 2 Honors.
● All other students should be recommended for Spanish 2, French 2, or Latin 2.
○ Note: Honors World Language classes are taught with very little English.
