The following maintenance schedule example covers engines which are rated for
continuous power (COP) 1200/1500 rpm.
Always check that the maintenance chart used matches the engine type, duty rating and
speed. Refer to the operation and maintenance manual for full listings.
Cummins operate a service code system 5, 10 , 20 dependant on the number of hours run
as shown. When undertaking maintenance always carry out all operations listed up to and
including the code required.
A major overhaul is estimated at 60,000 hrs for QSV Gas Engines.

Spark Plug Care

• Ensure every spark plug is clean.

(Cummins Pt.No 4010981)

• Do NOT assume new plugs are clean or set

• Clean by rubbing porcelain with alcohol (mineral
spirits) on a soft cloth.
• Take care not to touch the porcelain extension of the Pt. No 4010981
spark plug.
• Never insert using a socket with a rubber insert, this Cleanliness is vital
will soil a clean plug. (EHT)
• Check plug with care using non-metallic, clean Never Handle
feeler gauges, to avoid damaging the special Porcelain Part of the
Plug !
(platinum) electrode coating.
• Always replace at the recommended service interval PLUG GAP = 0.2mm

9
Changing Spark Plugs
• Remove valve cover single bolt fixing and
lift off cover and COP.
• Remove / Install using a magnetic or clip
type spark plug socket only.
• Install new plug and gasket, torque to
50Nm (38 ft-lbs.). COP/Valve cover ass’y

• Inspect coil boot for damage or signs of

tracking, replace if necessary
• Apply small amount of dielectric grease
inside COP boot (prevents plug body
sticking). Excess attracts dirt !
• Slide COP/Valve cover assembly into
spark plug well, tighten valve cover fixing.

10
Valve timing

The valve timing procedure may be carried out as detailed for the QSV Diesel with
the following amendments:
• As no pump lobe exists on the gas camshaft, valve timing is referenced to the
exhaust lobe. In order to achieve the correct exhaust lobe position (rising) the
cylinder must be timed at BDC position. As a TDC tool will not track BDC position
we must determine TDC of another cylinder that corresponds to BDC of the
cylinder being set.
• Use 5.3 mm (+/- 0.08) exhaust cam lift at 14 degrees BBDC firing stroke. This
equals 84 or 93mm in DOR when measured on the largest 683 or 760mm flywheel
circumference (V16/18 data). OR, use inclinometer. Then check 7.44mm +/- 0.07 at
BDC.
• Remember to check timing between banks is not 180º out of phase. Consecutive
firing order B1...A1 etc. for standard rotation.
• When checking timing just set cylinder to BDC using table (use flywheel pointer
to select corresponding TDC). Then check cam lift as stated for BDC above.

NOTE: If the camshaft has been removed or split, then timing should be checked on one
exhaust lobe of each section of the camshaft to check accuracy of alignment and that the
parts have been assembled correctly.
