Purpose

The aim of this course unit is to:

Provide the student with an understanding of basic theory of telecommunication devices and circuits.
Know the construction, operation and utilization of different telecommunication devices.
Prepare for advanced work in telecommunications.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course unit the student should be able to:

Select suitable systems for different telecommunication applications.


Apply the skills and knowledge acquired through laboratory practice and industrial attachment to design and
construct simple telecommunication systems for different applications.

Course Description

Waveguides and microwave devices: types of waveguides, modes of waveguide operations, waveguide
components, waveguide tuning and matching, active microwave devices, solid state microwave devices,
microwave measurements. Radar: principles of radar, the radar equation, types of radar, radar systems, radar
applications. Television: TV fundamentals, monochrome TV transmitter and receiver block diagrams, principles
of colour television, colour TV transmitter receiver block diagrams, TV colour circuit diagrams, TV camera,
elements of high definition TV. Mobile communication: principles of cellular systems; GSM rules and
regulations; access schemes; frequency re-use principle; hands-off, roaming, and mobile generations. Satellite
communications: satellite orbits, classifications, launching and station keeping, satellite antennas, satellite links
and budget, Vsats. Emerging technologies: digitizing audio and video, audio and video compression, streaming
stored audio and video, real-time interactive audio and video.

Teaching Methodology

2hour lectures and 1 hour tutorial per week, and at least five 3-hour laboratory sessions per semester organized on
a rotational basis.

Mode of course assessment: Continuous assessment and written University examination shall
contribute 30% and 70% , respectively of the total marks.
