The System Unit of the Computer System is a metallic box that contains the major components of the
computer system. It contains the central processing unit also called the heart of the computer.

Components of the System Unit

a. Power Supply Unit: The System Unit draws power from the alternate through power protecting
device to power it.

b. Motherboard: It is a large board that contains number of electronic tiny circuits and other
components.

c. Speaker: It outputs the sound of what happens within the computer system.

d. Exhaust Fan: This is responsible for cooling the heat within the computer system.

e. Central Processing Unit (CPU): It is responsible for accepting data, processing it and then giving
results.

The Central Processing Unit

The CPU consists of five (5) parts namely

 ALU (Arithmetic & Logic Unit): Permits arithmetical and Logical Operations.
 Registers: Temporary storage location that hold data, keep track of instructions, hold locations
and result of these operations.
 Control Units: It times and regulates the entire operation of the entire computer system.
 Machine Instructions: They are written codes that allows information to be stored and
retrieved. These are mainly the RAM &ROM.
 Internal Bus: It is a network of communication lines that links internal elements within the

Computer Room Management Ethics

1. Proper Ventilation: There should be adequate ventilation where people work to reduce congestion
in the computer room.

2. Neat Environment: The computer room must be kept free from neat, tidy, and dust free.
3. Access to Computer Room: The computer room must be restricted to only authorized staff and
users.

4. Appropriate Illumination: Computer room needs appropriate light for people to see clearly,
fluorescent bulb should be used instead.

Laboratory Rules and Regulations

1. The computer room must be swept everyday.

2. The computer room should be kept cool with air condition.

3. The computer room must be dust free environment.

4. Unauthorized users must be kept from the computer room.

5. Always switch off all appliances after use.

6. The computer room is not a place for eating or drinking.

1. Education: Today, most schools and higher educational institutions have computers in the classroom
for teacher and students and they benefit from its usage.

2. Banking: It functions to control the entire banking system that also includes ‘Electronic Banking
Services’. Electronic banking provides 24 hour services. e.g Automated Teller Machines. (ATM).

3. Industry: Computers are used to facilitate production planning and control systems,.

4. E- Commerce: E-commerce helps in boosting the economy. It makes buying and selling activities
easier, more efficient and faster.

Impact of ICT To The Society

1. FASTER COMMUNICATION SPEED: In the past, it took a long time for any news or messages
to be send. Now with the Internet, news or messages are sent via e-mail to friends, business partners or
to anyone efficiently.

2. LOWER COMMUNICATION COST: Using the Internet is cost-effective than the other modes of
communication such as telephone, mailing or courier service.

3. RELIABLE MODE OF COMMUNICATION: Computers are reliable. With the internet,

information could be accessed and retrieved from anywhere and at anytime.
4. EFFECTIVE SHARING OF INFORMATION: With the advancement of ICT, information can
be shared by people all around the world.

5. PAPERLESS ENVIRONMENT. ICT technology has created the term paperless environment. This
term means information can be stored and retrieved through the digital medium instead of paper.

6. SOCIAL PROBLEMS: There are some negative effects of ICT. It has created social problems in
the society. Nowadays, people tend to choose online communication rather than having real time
conversations.

7. HEALTH PROBLEMS: A computer may harm users if they use it for long hours frequently.
Computer users are also exposed to bad posture, eyestrain, physical and mental stress.

8. FRAUD: Through the internet and computer networks a lot of deception and scam can be
perpetrated by dubious people

9. STEALING: people can steal very important documents, information and money through the
misuse of computer and the internet.
10. PORNOGRAPHY: Children and adults can watch pornographic films and pictures on the internet.
